    Great set. An excellent vintage recording! It's interesting to compare this gig with one they recorded earlier in 1970 for the BBC in London that was released in 2020: "Traffic Live in London". The vibe is the same with a few differences in the sets: The London set featured "Glad" and "No Time to Live" instead of "Feeling Good and "Forty Thousand Headmen".

    Great classic Traffic show 6 days after my HS graduation. I bought John Barleycorn Must Die that summer and have been a Traffic fan from then onward. Welcome to the Canteen is my all time fav live recording with Dave Mason n Rick Gretch. Awesome music from a time gone by! Thanks.

      I've searched up and down every path I could find, but haven't found any other recordings of the handful of shows that Mason played with Traffic on the tour that produced the 'Canteen' tracks. 'Alone Together' had just been released, and Dave was performing those selections at their inception. There's nothing like fresh produce, and the Mason tracks on 'Canteen' prove it.

      @@rickwhitebeinz That's what bootleggers did it back then, break the machine down into pieces, smuggle it in and reassemble, need maybe 2/3 people to do this. Alternatively if you're known to the band then tape at side of the stage.

    I think hearing the 3 piece Traffic brings out just how good an all rounder the late Chris Wood was musically. Just think, when Steve is playing guitar or electric piano, Chris had to play the organ and bass pedals.

      +John Uriel John - I agree on all!! There's a great Chris Wood box set coming out soon that underlines all of what you mention (reference Wiki). However, on this 1970 tour, Rick Grech plays bass(and a little rhythm guitar) - according to the UK expanded 'Barleycorn' reissue. Onward, Matthew.

    I saw the first show here. The warm-up act for Traffic in the first show was "The Silver Beetles"... not kidding. It was very strange; but they were off in a short time....
    maybe in a half hour or 40 minutes. I don't remember if the first show had the same set list or not. I was too high and tripping...yeah, in 1970 a 20 year old no brain that at least got lucky enough to see Traffic (without Dave Mason) :-( ..

    You think what you like and I'll think what I like. I saw this bunch at a uni near reading and Chris Wood was out cold from the drugs, after staggering through "whatever" of a somewhat ropey set. I've never forgotten that, there was a gold Ferrari in the car park. Not for me, thanks. Round about "When the eagle flies, that time". I'd known two schoolgirls that had been in there too, about "Mr Fantasy". Not good.

  • @truriley9084
    @truriley9084 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm listening to this. Traffic is Stevie Winwood and I don't understand, really. Why was a man with a red-hot voice singing material that could have been written by five year olds (40,000 Headmen? Smiling "Whatevers"? This isn't material, it's inarticulacy) and padding the set with indifferent two-chord solos? Why couldn't he keep a band together? I think his best time was with Spencer Davis and I think, even today, that catalogue does a lot better than anything Traffic did, commercially. On the back of that, he does what he likes and he has the right but I'd suspect brain damage, really. "About Time" (2005, I think) is a really good album - we waited long enough for it.

    • @truriley9084
      @truriley9084 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! I like that but I'd have had to fancy Mama Cass (no way!) and that's never going to wash. Sadly, I think most of Dave mason's songs were a bit twee, a bit shit, if I'm honest, but he could play some good stuff. Other than that, I'm really well. Good one!

      Interesting take on this.. you complain about two chord songs, but suggest his best work was spencer davis group. Thats completely backwards as SDG was 3 chord pop, but Traffic songs were more complex compositions with a wide range of influences. It wasnt commercial, but that was the whole point. Musically, traffics songs were more interesting, lyrically insightful and thought provoking while SDG was surface level pop. I personally feel his best work was definitely the traffic/blind faith era.
