J.D. Shaw is amazing. This is most life and fire I've heard from a Phantom hornline in almost a decade. The arrangements are impeccable, they just have to keep cleaning.
It’s so great to see you back on the field. I love this show. Regardless of some of the comments below. One of the problems with drum corps mentality is this stubborn tenacity about tradition. It can hold you back if you let it. I think this is the Phantom we love with an eye on the future. The refusal to change and grow is one of the things that held them back. There are things to work on for sure, and some changes can be made to boost the production- but the ingredients for a great year are there. Keep it going and SUTA!
What a great sounding show. Give it time to clean up and adapt. Come finals night this is going to not only look great but blow your socks off. Keep up the hard work PR
What a fantastic show!! The "repertoire" is not set in stone for DC anymore than it is for symphony. Both are ever changing. Sure there will always be those pieces that are standards, loved, perfect, and lauded, but new pieces come along just as they did in 1750 or 1850 or even 1950. Music is ALIVE!!! Thank goodness it is. Why be here if it isn't?
That's a great show, wish I lived further east to see it live. I'm a decades long fan. I've seen a lot of trends in DCI. Bluecoats wowed us and kicked off this new hatless trend. I think it works for some shows, in which I can see they'd be detrimental to the choreography. However, I think this Phantom show would benefit from their classic helmeted uniform look. That thought and $1.25 will get me a cup of coffee, right? Interested to see where this goes, and still amazed at what these kids and creative staffs can accomplish!
I'm an OLDER member of Drum Corps. Could someone explain to me why the season starts so late now? When i marched and competed, it started in May, and went to November.
In my opinion, they need to drop DCI, and change it to MBI, marching bands International. We no longer have real drum and bugle c o r p s. We now have marching bands superimposed on the three-ring circus, please start calling it what it really is.
What's with the coffins? The book is OK, but it's all flash, not the quality of music I expect from Phantom Regiment. The Corp used to exhibit a musical quality that was unique and unmatched. It's not there anymore. They're trying too hard to be like everyone else and it's very disappointing.
@@bryanmay4118 You can play Mahler, then you can PLAY Mahler. It's not the book, it's the arrangement and playing with no passion. This sounds like everyone else, flash to impress. The quality isn't there anymore, DCI has successfully created and universal sound for everyone because individuality hasn't been given credit. You want to win? Then you have to be like the Blue Devils. DCI ruined drum corps. I'm not impressed with any of it. It's boring, they all do the same thing, their music sounds all the same.
They play loud and the musicians are executing well for how early it is in the season. I just don't like the arrangements. There's a lot of repetition so that certain ideas no longer have any impact or effect, like turning backfield at the end of a hit for the SECOND time, or hearing mellophones rip up to a high note for the FOURTH time in just the opening few minutes. The activity has moved beyond this kind of constant face-smacking. Don't get me wrong, I loved the big loud ending, but I'm not sure about the show's legs given what the other corps are doing.
Disagree. This show is designed extremely well. Face smacking and "dynamics" are music. They move well (still needs a lot of cleaning) and their sound is not loud all the time like most with amps turned up to 11. When you can HEAR the tubas and they aren't buried by low end synth or amps...you are doing the activity a service. Phantom is a pleasant difference to what everyone else is performing and doing "Phantom" better than it has in years. Should be a fun year.
Yeah I have to agree with the other guy - being able to hear the raw quality of the hornline instead of a suspiciously well balanced hornline (that gets their volume from mics on the field) is really refreshing. The drill, although not super clean, has some actual content instead of just jazz-running/flutter-stepping everywhere like we've seen the last few years.
I understand what you’re saying but I respectfully disagree. My son is in this show (so I’m a little biased..lol). This show makes you FEEL something. The music makes your heart pound and your eyes swell with tears. While I enjoy the other shows, to me they are like watching a musical theatrical show. It’s more about the props and people dancing on the field rather than the actual music being played. I do think that’s where DCI is going for now, but I hope Phantom stays true to their roots.
@@ann-marierobinson1861 I hope they do too. I guess I should be clear that, of all the shows I saw in Muncie, Phantom was by far my favorite, even though I didn't like the arrangements. I thought they could've beaten the Cavies at that show. I think with better arrangements they could really push into the top 5 again.
This is my post and my son happens to be one of the sick members that has been out for the past few days. I’m not sure what mandates you’re talking about but you have no idea what these members are going through or how bad they are feeling. No one is more disappointed then they are for missing shows. Cheer them on and wish them well or get off my post.
@@zipadeelady6127 My comment was mainly directed at certain members of DCI’s overhead that in-forced and made it mandatory for aspiring members to undergo medical procedures ie testing ect to join the activity this season. I and others, feel the testing ect ect, are not healthy or health conscious, in the least. I also feel those same things could be the culprit, making members sick. I apologize for any unintentional hostility, I just feel obligated to spread word of this phenomenon. I wish them and everyone else good health and a rewarding tour.
@@nanoweber250 I was simply explaining my thoughts on the bs that Dci pulled with said medical procedures/mandates. Felt obligated actually and pretty worried that so many members are falling ill, that’s all. No need to read more into it, I’m also not a spammer and don’t appreciate the insults.
@@trap4dafu2k0fit You think mandatory testing caused members to get sick??? are you ok? get some education. By "etc etc" I assume you mean vaccinations and masking. WTF. Testing, mask wearing, and vaccinations REDUCE the likelihood of serious illness, they don't cause it.
Lots of miss steps, awkward spacing, flags and rifle drops. Not the Phantom I grew up with. Did not like the score. So used to hearing Classical music from PR.
Really? Every time I listen to it I get goosebumps. I thought the guard did very well, maybe I'll have to watch again to see what your referring to, I only saw one or two issues, and compared to a few of the other groups that night that was nothing. And as for awkward spacing I'm guessing that has to be due to quite a feel members getting ill and being unable to perform. I think for their second show it was great but what do I know, my son is part of the group and they can do no wrong.
Um... they are playing classical music. They're ending the show with Mahler for crying out loud. Plus they had a pretty bad covid outbreak that kept a bunch of people off the field.
Yeah, not the Phantom I grew up with either (saw my first PR show in '87). This is another disappointing show for me (drill and book); very underwhelming...AGAIN. I see a 7-9 place finish at finals. Maybe with a competent/serviceable color guard and some serious luck they place sixth, but with this guard? Uhh, no...a hard no. And those props...wtf? Totally unnecessary and distracting. Devils, Bluecoats, Santa Clara, Crown, and the Cadets are light years ahead of Phantom in originality, innovation, and talent right now and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Such a shame.

i like this better than the cadets, talking through most of the show, then filling it in with music.
I'm an OLDER member of Drum Corps. Could someone explain to me why the season starts so late now?
When i marched and competed, it started in May, and went to November.
Costs of a long tour, and the fact that all the performers are in high school and college make a may to November tour impossible.
Until G bugles return, no micing…..this is just High School Marching Band Plus.
