Maybe the movie deliberately refused to elaborate too deeply on the otherworldly skeleton. I say deliberate because of the theme of the movie, nihilism. Basically, there was no meaning or value to the nature of the skeleton, its origin and nature were insignificant.

So we're just gonna ignore the fact that the movie never addressed the question of what that enormous (alien?) skeleton in the cave actually was? Okay cool
Im pretty sure the skeleton WAS human originally and they were the carrier before paul, but since another carrier wasnt found the entity forced them to carry out a state of meditation and altered their body to be able to stay alive until they would eventually come in contact with Paul Extra-dimensional being type stuff, like dormomu in the MCU or the Hiss from Control (Dormomu made his servants eyes change probably a cost of channeling his dimension, and the Hiss altered the hosts to be able to serve it better, idk much about the Hiss though i havent gotten around to finishing Control)

A masterclass in real characters, eerie, bone-chilling horror, thematic storytelling (tons of symbolism in the bridge, the chimes), and sound-design. I'm sorry but very few films that have released have come close to that since Sinister (ft. Ethan Hawke).
James is the emptyman. He is a tulpa, and the skeleton was a fallen angel that posses James. The guy at the beginning was too weak to hold the demon for very long. So the cult made a new stronger body for the demon. Which was a tulpa.
The story of this movie seems to have nothing to do with angels nor demons. It's about nihilism, emptiness, and it suggests that the world isn't real and it's actually the product of a mass of pure thought that exists in another plane of existence, that acts as a collective conscience of sorts, which originates all thoughts.

I think they are implying they conjured him out of thin air and he's just a person made up of grief and heartache, and the empty man can now transfer from a human body to this made up one that only came into existence out of imagined and manifested grief sorrow and trauma as his entire experience and all he knows. So they made a person out of thin air, and the empty man picked him because of his existing in pure emptiness and sadness as a perfect host. I think the two things are separate. Step one was make a perfect host out of thin air that would attract the empty man, and then get the empty man to target and possess him. And since he's made up, maybe he will be a better host with immortality unlike the natural human who is falling apart. Could be wrong?
It's explained perfectly. No, his family didn't exist. He was a tulpa, existed for three days. And entity isn't the empty man, the empty man is vessel for entity, so, this tulpy guy is the empty man created in existence by a cult to be vessel
I'm so glad that I'm not even about what was happening in this movie because it would take a crazy person to get it and I don't mean crazy in the sense of loss of sanity I mean crazy in the sense that you have to lose all sense of reality in order to understand what this movie is truly about.
This is the best of the non AI voices that I have heard. So far. If we are allowed a vote, then I vote for this voice. Also, good catch on Jacques Derrida High School!
So basically, if James had just given himself some self-love and self-care, he could have avoided this entire predicament. That seems to be the idea, create a Tulpa into being and give them a horrific backstory and mentally wear them down so that the Empty Man can take them over. Should the Tulpa have enough will power and self-confidence though, they should be able to resist such things.
No, you've entirely missed the point. Recall that the orator at the Pontifex Institute referred to Man as his own salvific force, from which he can be soothed and reconciled. If anything, James ought to have turned to Christ to redeem his distraught past.
Semblance. They can balance it out or get a de-esser cheap or free. Good call. B and p words may also need adjustment but didn't hear many so not as bad.
Empty can be a descriptive term referring to someone who has achieved Nirvana. Something tells me that the malignant influence of the being might have something to do with Buddhism or an ancient form of Buddhism that people don't practice anymore. When you achieve Nirvana or enlightenment in buddhism, you transcend the flesh, desire, and everything else and become 100% empty.
to me it feels like buddhists chase "true" death, since in their opinion, all sensation eventually leads to suffering. I fell into it a few years back to deal with an ego death... and after all this time, buddhist-type beats are still my least favorite of all the existential religions/philosophies out there. For me, we're supposed to feel and react to stimuli in order to grow. Positive or negative, everything we experience gives textures to our mind. Like we're continously building ourselves as a piece of art, which is often a vulnerable and unforgiving process. Well, I guess it's supposed to be, because we are all our own magnus opus... for a short 70 years or so. My gripe with buddhism is that it's essentially a nihilist preaching oblivion under the pretense of compassion. Of course I have great respect to actual practiotioners and devotees who are brave enough to commit to any philosphy, it just feels like a perspective so jaded that the guy who made it up wanted everyone else to give up too. I'd rather take a look at why we can think and feel and move from there, instead of ignoring those sensations and honing in on feeling the lack of them. I've been on both sides and all I can say is that I feel slightly less hate-irony about existing if I choose to explore "why" instead of "why not". Neither sides end, but at least with "why" I can come up with my own answer. For why nots... well, the answer is self-apparent to all.
Okay, can anyone explain the bottle-blowing bullshit, though? It seems like an entirely different plot, killing teens for no apparent reason, like in Ring, except that's kinda explained. Their only link was Amanda, and it feels like they shoehorned her into the side plot, anyways.
I think it was basically supposed to be the intiation for the beginning of his transformation I guess. Just mimicking what Paul went through with the flute I think
I literally thought it was foreshadowing by the end of the video. Blowing into an empty vessel, like how the Empty Man bonds itself to James and makes him it’s vessel, as it did with Paul. Idk, though, I might be reaching a bit far.
James mental health plays a pivotal factor throughout the movie. From his wife and child being killed, finding dead teens pushed him further away from himself. Finding out Nora and Amanda were pawns to get him where he was, finally disconnected James which where the empty man was able to bond with him. Experiencing repeated truamas creates a disconnect in the mind, a disconnect between emotions and actions. James killing Paul so confidently was him accepting the emptiness in his heart.

That's why one must have a strong psychological aspect, perception, etc. That will make them immune or shielded from such evil force. Unfortunately, James didn't have that as his psychological side was too weak to fight against something evil in the mental perspective and in the end, he succumb to it, causing himself and his conscience to fade away, replaced by that evil being.
James is a tragic character in the most literal meaning of the word. He was created broken, given a traumatic past and only one purpose - to lose his identity and become a vessel. He tries to act but ultimately his efforts are completely vain because he started playing the game from an already lost position. I don't think he could've won.

It's explained perfectly. No, his family didn't exist. He was a tulpa, existed for three days. And entity isn't the empty man, the empty man is vessel for entity, so, this tulpy guy is the empty man created in existence by a cult to be vessel
@ErinJeanette you are right except entity isn't the empty man, this guy is, the empty man = vessel for entity to possess

The best voice actor is Adam, from Mystery Recapped, he has a soft voice and the exact same tone as the former AI they used. Amazing work.
Thanks Nick!
man you should go watch Mystery Recapped's voice actor Adam. His voice is so soothing to hear and he has a soft and warm tone!
Smart lad
Self love lol
Damn. I hope the empty man doesnt come for me. Ive been in a sort of limbo since getting sober 2 yrs ago
No, you've entirely missed the point. Recall that the orator at the Pontifex Institute referred to Man as his own salvific force, from which he can be soothed and reconciled. If anything, James ought to have turned to Christ to redeem his distraught past.
@@Ronnock James was never in control of himself

The Narrator deserves a TV magazine show. Your voice amazes me so much😊
One of the biggest clues about James is his last name Lasombra which literally translates to The shadow.
Just mimicking what Paul went through with the flute I think
reminiscent of the tribal flute from the mountains in the intro
I think it had something to do with certain frequencies helping to channel whatever the entity was from its dimension
James killing Paul so confidently was him accepting the emptiness in his heart.
you have a very calming voice, is it weird that I turn on your videos to help fall asleep? either way thank you for doing these recaps, I appreciate them.

I don't understand this mindset. If you notice during the flashback with the dead wife and son, the son has a brown bottle like James and the teens blew into on the bridge.
Pretty good movie, kind of reminded me of that early 2000's era of j horror where the protagonist gets a curse and is on a timer to defuse their own demise like ju-on, ringu or kairo.

James Badge Dale rivals Sean Bean in deaths in movies. He literally dies in everything.

If you look up Taoism, and Tulpa, it makes more sense. A lot of this is borrowed from those older Eastern philosophies.
If you think about it, actors are Emptyman as they literally breeding the character created by the collective thoughts of writers, producers, and directors. They do get some leeway in how they channel that character though, unlike these carriers, and the becoming isn’t permanent of course.
You have a good voice for this. MUCH better than the text to speech imo. Keep up the good work!

It is a hinduism and Buddhist concept called "tulpa" in which a person who does intensive mediation very hard and then reaches such a level of self control that just with just thinking he/she can convert imagination into reality ,and vice versa , but in this process they lose their humans form and become Demi gods

The skeleton is inspired from Zdzisław Beksiński's painting

I was pretty scared this entire video. Great recap👍
