    I found this extremely helpful. I have an NFC tag I need to scan and the droid I have (Galaxy A03S) is supposed to have a reader. But I can't find it nor does it give me an option to use an app. Am I missing something here? I thought NFC readers were on new phones only but people keep telling me it's been around a while. What phone are you using? Are there cheap phone options that have this ability? Thank you in advance.

    Bren, thank you for great video and detailed explanation! So you know by chance if there is a way to amplify the NFC chip slightly? So that my chip can be detected within a 1-2 meters of distance?

    • @BrenMaartens
      @BrenMaartens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hey there!
      Its quite difficult to be able to amplify this signal. The limited range of NFC is actually a security feature. The only way you could do this is by using a larger antenna and a module powerful enough to output to this antenna (They do exist) but even at the maximum, you would only realistically get 20-30cm out of it.
      If you're looking to do very far range with RFID, I suggest looking into UHF (Ultra-High Frequency) Tags. These are commonly used on livestock ear tags, warehousing and clothing stores, with a UHF Reader you could do up to 10 meters.

    • @premium2554
      @premium2554 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrenMaartens for that kinda long-range should we have a special reader or can we still read those tags with our smartphones’ NFC abilities? If not what is the maximum range can we reach with general NFC modules with our daily phones? Can we increase this range with just changing the NFC tags type/frequency or It’s totally depends to reader? And thank you so much for this video👌🏻 It was really informative

    • @BrenMaartens
      @BrenMaartens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@premium2554 HI Kubilay!
      Unfortunately you will need a special UHF reader to read UHF tags as they work in a much higher frequency. Our phones are only limited to 13.56Mhz (NFC).
      That being said, since the antennas in our phones have a limited size, the range of the NFC transmission is limited to only a few cm from your phone. All tag types will respond with the same distance.

    • @MrRedstonefreedom
      @MrRedstonefreedom 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "All tag types will respond with the same distance"@@BrenMaartens simply not true at all. Bigger tags have a bigger read distance.
      I have no idea if you can beef-up a reader, but what you said about tags is wrong.

    • @BrenMaartens
      @BrenMaartens  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MrRedstonefreedom Hey man! you're actually correct. Generally speaking if the tag is bigger, the antenna is also bigger resulting in a further reading range. However it's most effective if the transmitter antenna is larger (in this case the phone) but yes, bigger tags are bigger antennae and therefore slightly better read distance

    can NFC tags open and close a electrical contactor ?

    • @BrenMaartens
      @BrenMaartens  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Certainly, However you would just need to find an NFC compatible electrical contactor.
      If you don't have one, you would need to just put together an NFC reader and a microcontroller like an Arduino.
      When the NFC reader detects the tag, it tells the Arduino and the Arduino sends a small pulse to the coil side of the contactor to either open or close it. Quite an awesome use for it!

    • @tgif575

      Yes, this is what I have done. You can get them in a small sticker. Once you write your data, you can lock the tag, which can't be rewritten. I used a website with my contact info that tracks when people click the link.

    • @j.ballsdeep420
      @j.ballsdeep420 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are NFC/RFID writer applications that can encrypt the data, same as credit cards with RFID, this then can also be locked to writing without decryption. It could be brute force overwritten with decent difficulty with basic encyption, up to 256 and advanced encryption such as HID uses in some instances. If you're asking for convenience of reusing, yes, you can re-write over most of them.

      The only way you can do that is if you have an online data base that has all those staff details. Then have your card refer to a unique ID of each staff member in the database. So as you can the card, it's linked to the Staff information from the Database.

      These frequencies can also be different when we start looking at active tags which have a more niche use case.

      Good question Luis, It is a little trickier than it seems. Because the reader on your phone is an NFC read/writer. You might need to use special software that makes the phone act as a Card and only output a UID number. But this is quite tedious because every time you want to open the door you need to open an app on your phone.
      If you're okay with that -
      You would also need to use an NFC Reader on your door which is connected to a magnetic door lock. Every time the NFC Reader detects the correct UID. It disengages the Magnetic Lock for 3 seconds - Enough time to open the door and walk.
