  • RACE WEEK, Ep. 4 - After watching their campaign for the America's Cup nearly sink before their eyes, American Magic rides an emotional rollercoaster in Auckland. The production, design and shore teams work 24 hours a day to get PATRIOT back on the water, while the sailing team readies to perform on race day. As PATRIOT is rolled into the morning sunlight following nine days of superhuman effort, American Magic has just 48 hours to prepare for the Prada Cup Semifinal.

    Thanks for being so open. You are certainly the most likeable American team in America’s Cup history

      Yep. I don’t think Dennis Connor would have afforded the same level of support should the boot be on the other foot.
      He would have said “too bad. That’s all part of it...”

    I'm a staunch ETNZ fan but I love the determination of this team.
    And the way they conduct their business.
    Respectfully and with humility.
    I wish you well with the pending races.
    I have a feeling you are going to do well.

      I dont know much about sailing but ever since NZ won the first America's Cup I've enjoyed watching every nations involved since then.
      The foiling and the technology is awesome to watch too, but only 3 challenges involved. If it continues how many challenges will compete in the next Cup?
      I heard on the local news (NZ) that the American Syndicate said if they win the America's Cup they will go back to single keel racing. I've been waiting for someone to say that. I'm behind you American Magic all the way!
      Respect from NZ👍🇳🇿

    I'm an UK and Ineos supporter, but have huge respect and admiration for the effort that terry, dean, goody, boat crew, the shore crew and the wider team have put in before and after the capsize. I wish them well tomorrow again LR. Good luck guys.

    Impressive construction work in carbon fiber, I never imagined that something so big without an engine could fly, I had the great opportunity to see the construction process, I and my team painted them Beautifully, the mule and Patriot traveled to Rhode Island on three occasions to give the finishing touch to this beauty of naval engineering Thanks America Maggie 🇺🇸 ❤️

    Honestly I’ve not been a big fan of this team..until now. You’ve conducted yourself with professionalism and at the same time been completely transparent (well, as much as any America’s cup team) about the struggles and challenges you have faced and with the spotlight of a big mishap you have shown the world that sailboat racing is still a gentlemen’s sport. When one takes a hit you all lend a hand...no matter what. Well done to your shore team and all that have contributed to get you back on the water, I’ll be cheering you on from now on!!

    Beautiful boat, wishing American Magic and her crew many wins!
    during the capsize when leaned over the rudder in the water has such a narrow Chord, is it possible a long chord could have saved the day with more rudder authority when just the last foot or two of rudder still in the water at lower speeds?!

    • @gavinaeronaut0121
      @gavinaeronaut0121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Longer chord , more drag, don’t want to be dragging that round a race course

    • @captarmour
      @captarmour 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gavinaeronaut0121 could be a rule for safety that all boats must comply with. as we saw leaned over the rudder is just along for the ride

  • @cordobadebear

    After the mend they went out for practice and had a hard splash that looked exactly as the uplift, loss of pressure and sails stall that caused the capsize... thinking it’s a design flaw of the hull underbelly shape, mass distribution and maybe other factors... imagined they needed to add some mass on the rudder or at the back to prevent it from flying away, bet they don’t want to do any of of that with extra mass or drag, but without changes to sail trimming and depower and/or mass or hull shape to prevent wind from going under the magic team might have ongoing control issues during racing, good luck 🤞

    The Fact that those Boats can Not be righted Easily is a Problem.
    The Fact that the Boat Also Broke from a Simple Capsize, This is Concerning.
    However the Crew are Definetly in the Right Frame of Mind, Now They have to do Their Best with a Dodgy Boat.
    Good Luck American Magic.

      The Grinders pump hydraulic fluid. The hydraulics are used to control the sails.

  • @MonzaSSguy
    @MonzaSSguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 1:47 he speaks of a 'freak occurrence', but if racing boats are now designed to fly, crashing like this will become a regular occurrence and hulls will need to withstand that sort of downward impact force. On one of the first practice sessions back out, it almost happened again, though to a lesser extent, just a big splash, but I'll bet one of the team members later went into the hull, to check for any signs of delamination of the fresh patch area. Just the new normal, for this type of craft...

      With any kind of racing, be it Nascar, Bicycle, Motorcycle, Horse, if you want any chance to win, even with the best of equipment, most often the winner will be the one that is willing to be on the ragged edge of disaster.
