    Excellent comparision among those calibers.
    Many thanks for taking your time to make the video, is very impressive what a
    17 HMR hp can do....
    Thanks for share it!

    Love the channel guys. That 17HMR was impressive on that wood target. That is very solid and thick wood. Did not expect that small lightweight round to blow through. Only downside with 17HMR is that compared with the 22LR, it does not have the variety of ammo (i.e. no subsonics for plinking) and it runs somewhat more pricey. Great Vid.

    Good comparison, you did great with the .22 Remington golden bullets as they are not know for their accuracy, unlike the CCI and Hornady!

    I think your accuracy would improve if you took your fingers off the barrels while shooting as it interferes with the harmonics of a free floating barrel

    Those Weihrauchs are sweet! I have been looking at the HMR.17 for a little while now. For what I use rifles for it would not be much of an advantage from what I have already but, I sure do like the ballistics and I bet they are fun to shoot. Enjoyed the video (and the comments below - LOL!) ATB2U/Stay Safe - Stan

    Excellent video, interesting to see the plywood experiment especially. I've got a 22lr + 17hmr + 22 hornet + 22/250rem. Out of all four .17hmr is my favourite. Nice looking rifles weirauchs, but can't decide on either the hw60 or the hw66. Which one would you go for?

    This a rather odd comparison, then the .17 round is a "necked down" .22 WMR case, so of course t's going to have much more power than a .22 long rifle round. A more fair comparison would be with a .22 magnum (WMR) and the reults are far closer. Albeit that the .17 is a flatter shooing round, the .22 WMR has greater knock-down power due to its advantage in energy, bullet frontal area, and sectional density. The .22 WMR is therefore the best killing round. It should also be noted that a 17 grain .17 bullet is very susceptible to even the slightest wind, whereas a (say( 40 grain .22 bullet from a WMR is not nearly as effected. The .22 WMR ammo is also significantly cheaper.

    What is the best type of .17HMR ammo for rabbit control? They will be eaten so rounds that will produce minimal meat damage are preferred, even though most shots will be headshots

    Hello, just curious, what brand of rifles are you shooting? Did your rifles come with the muzzle beaks installed? I'm assuming they are muzzle breaks and not suppressors. Thanks.

    • @djmj12714
      @djmj12714 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are suppressors, not muzzle breaks. Neither caliber really needs a muzzle break. The reason the .22 WMR is so quiet is because Nigel is shooting sub-sonic ammunition, not so with the .17 HMR. Sub-sonic ammunition through a suppressor makes a very quiet combination. The .17 HMR was quieter than normal because of the suppressor. However, since the ammunition was not sub-sonic, you hear the distinctive "crack".

    Why use subsonic .22 to compare to a much faster .17? Use hyper-velocity 22, as it has double the power.

  • @MRxr400

    nice shooting. I've a 22lr short barrel I find looses accuracy at 75M+ with Winchester power point high velocity. The Elley subs are pin point accurate for 50M and under. So I decided to get a 22 magnum longer barrel for 75M+ for shooting of foxes. The 17hmr is known as far as I understand, not to like wind, so I chose the 22 mag. I've had to take a shot at 100M at a fox with the 22LR between the eyes and made an instant kill. Unfortunately, he wouldn't come in closer and I didn't have the magnum.

  • @ooweesaler
    @ooweesaler 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting penetration test. A penetration test of these rounds is comparing apples and pears. The difference between the rounds is in use and application. Sit outside a warren with a .sub sonic 22 for an afternoon and you will shoot far more rabbits than sitting there with an HMR. But if the rabbits are further away..............

    change your grip with the left hand your probably be pulling the rifle to the left due to the recoil just place your hand flat under the hand grip your right hand should be doing all the work ie pulling the rifle into the shoulder

    Don't take this badly but your gun mounting is terrible. You'd shoot much more accurately if you shoulder the weapon correctly to get better cheek weld and stability.

      to much scope , had to mount high to clear barrel , so drop stock for head to align with scope .. should of raised bag the rifle was laying on to level out everything ... thing is scope is over kill for a .17hmr I have one with a 3x9x32 and at 100 yards just use 4x .. enough for 11/2 groups off a bag .some sold this fool a no need scope .

  • @stevo1166

    So for rabbits the ballistic tip wins, excessive penetration is not wanted for small critters, better for the fox providing its accurate at 100m, ive only ever used ballistic tip 17gr and they can shoot 5p size groups at 100. Love the 22 for how quiet it is thiugh. Just a shame how quick it drops.

  • @rathy2147
    @rathy2147 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Simon must have a good set between his legs to stand down range filming while your shooting a 22lr which is know to ricochet at tin cans you can hear the ricochets. Come on guys the videos are great but safety first. Firearms officers would have a field day with this video. The laws are already strict enough about permissions with Rimfire rifles and you've posted a video showing something totally illegal . If you wondering what's illegal about it all shots fired from your firearm are to land on your permission you said in the video there's a field to your right you don't have permission for so if that bullet is to land on that land you have broken a law.

    • @ACampfireProduction
      @ACampfireProduction  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi rathy! Thanks for your comment, Simon was almost level with Nigel while filming this video. The second camera we used was on full zoom, hence the slight wavering of the clips as it is quite difficult to achieve a steady shot while free-holding a camera on full zoom, but we appreciate any and all concerns regarding our safety and well being!

    • @ACampfireProduction
      @ACampfireProduction  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi rathy21 thanks for your comment - as I say in the vid to the right is is land that we can't shoot on not land that we don't have permission to shoot on - it is just that it is waist deep in brambles on the other side but I do have permission sorry for the misunderstanding totally understandable

    If you were to shoot from the car at night in my country, you would immediately lose your hunting license. If you even have one. I suspect that you have relatively little respect for living beings and that you shoot everything that comes before the gun. Poor! A real hunter also gives the game a chance!
