90% Constitutional Silver, Is It Worth The Premium?

  • I picked up another 10 FV (Face Value) of 90% US Constitutional silver today. This purchase cost me 30.10 per ounce of silver. Generic silver bars and rounds can be had at a lesser premium in today's market. That said, is it still worth stacking Constitutional silver? Follow me thought the video and make that judgement for yourself.
    Please let me know your thoughts in the comment section and as always, thank you so much for watching!-SS

    Very informative video! I know very little about constitutional and junk silver. I’ve recently gotten into Jefferson war nickels, which I really think are slept on. But they are super bulky as well. Mintages are also crazy high on all these coins, which is the biggest turn off for me and which is why I don’t go heavy on constitutional. Gorgeous stack of beautiful Constitutional silver there, Struck! The top UNC Kennedy has a beautiful satin cartwheel look. The Franklin on top of the UNC roll does not share that look, however. I love the Benjies, but since there are virtually no found key dates with them any more, any pretty and lightly circulated Benjies are sweet to have. Numismatics are just not usually a part of the equation on those. Also, I think one factor that is often forgotten about, when considering relative costs of junk silver to bullion coins or rounds, is that we are talking about fractional amounts, and if you factor that into the prices of fractional bullion coins or rounds, you find that junk is a little more inline on prices. Furthermore, it can be seen as a plus that 90% is much harder, and therefore stands up to circulation and handling better than bullion coins and rounds. Lastly, having weighed Constitutional silver myself (as I'm sure you have too), it's kind of amazing just how much silver is actually STILL THERE on even the slickest of slick Barbers, SLQs and WLHs.

    • @SilverStruck
      @SilverStruck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fantastic comment, thank you for taking the time to write it! Due to the scarcity of 90% silver in the marketplace today and it's popularity, I think Constitutional silver will have some nice upside returns in the years to come. Weighing your 90% is the best way to buy as you already know. Most LCS's and the on-line bullion dealers will only to business with FV, so that's why I left that part out.

  • @danavipuzzles7308
    @danavipuzzles7308 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the key question is if it's worth stacking or if it's worth collecting. Stacking for weight, there are much better options like silver rounds and foreign silver coins that you can get cheaper. Collecting, totally worth it in my opinion. The older the coins get as the years go by, the more their numismatic value will continue to increase. Imagine getting a tube of Sitting Liberty dimes that are all in F+ condition. They're worth far more than their melt value. I believe that the same is already true for Barbers in good condition and is starting to become true for Mercury dimes in good condition, especially with older dates. If you buy a large "junk" quantity of Mercury dimes, 90% of the dates will be from the 40's, most of the dimes will be well worn, and those from the 30's and older will usually be slicks. A tube of Mercury dimes in good condition from the teens and 20's already has numismatic value. I don't think that will be the case with Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, and 1964 Kennedy halves anytime soon, since we still use the clad variations till this day, plus the inconvenience of having to check the dates to know if it's silver or not. But Mercury dimes, Walking Liberty halves, Franklin halves, and Standing Liberty quarters in good condition will definitely continue to go up in price, and of course, anything older as well like Barbers and Sitting Liberties.

      Thank you for taking the time to post this comment! The way I see it- 90% silver is multifaceted. You have the silver weight of the coin, the fractional aspect of the size of the coins, the recognizability of US coinage and the historical value. At this point- it's like stacking a collectable. I see big upside in future years for the value of 90% as it graduates out of just being stacked for silver weight,

    I've probably mentioned this before, but I'll mention it again anyway. I stack everything in proportion to its constituent counterparts. So for example, if I have 100 Morgan dollars, I will automatically make sure to stack 100 Peace dollars. That will also mean that I will have 400 half dollars spread out, as evenly as possible, between '64 Kennedys, Franklins, and Walking Libertys. This would, in turn, mean that I would have 800 Washington quarters, and 2,000 dimes split between Mercuries and Rosies. Prior to reaching 1,000 ounces of Silver (500 ounces of which was 90% Constitutional) I allowed myself to buy some coins that had a bit more wear on them. Having said that, I stick exclusively to the coins you see listed above. So I don't stack Standing Liberty quarters or Barbers of any kind. I do occasionally buy those coins when I see them for a good price, but that's almost always for the purpose of shooting them out as a small gift at Christmas. I also put a lot of those coins and other slicks that I happen to pick up in separate areas that I do not count as any part of my own stack that are for the purpose of giving to other people, should worst case scenarios end up asserting themselves. In this way, I can help others with several ounces of Silver when no other wealth is available to them. They also help to serve as diversionary stacks for people who might want to steal or rob from me. I actually don't consider the spot price to be any kind of accurate number, though I acknowledge that it is actively used as a measure by most. I actually consider the price paid to be real market price of the metal. However, again once I passed the 1,000 ounce mark in Silver, the specific price has become increasingly less important. This is also true as I continue to reflect on the happenings in culture and geopolitics. In other words, I'm increasingly convinced that it will be more important to possess the metal and less important as to whether I was able to get it a few cents cheaper at one time versus another. I know, that if consistent in the long-term, you will possess more metal by paying closer attention to price, but I find that this isn't typically how people operate. They simply avoid buying when they thinks "premiums" are too high, and then they buy later when they either can't wait any longer or when prices have dropped a bit. But most often, they haven't save all of their money over that time so that their purchase can be that much larger than it would otherwise have been. This is why is simply dollar-cost-average, making the best purchase that I can at the time, regardless of the actual price. I do buy it all though, including the Silver dollars. If and when I ever do sell, I will definitely have to go through and separate out all of the better condition coins from those in poorer condition. I'll probably also have to go through and search out the variety of coin values as well, especially if we are still in economic times where collectibility matters. I leave that for later on purpose, as something that I can enjoy in my leisure during retirement. I'm sure it will take a very long time to search through and catalogue thousands of ounces of Constitutional. Right now, I don't quite have 1,000 ounces of Constitutional, but I'm closing in a little bit closer each year. I passed the 500 ounce mark several years back. It's been a bit harder to find and buy over the past couple of years though. People just aren't selling it as much. I've been able to find quite a few Morgan dollars and some Peace dollars, but your run-of-the-mill Constitutional is pretty dry in my area. I stack the 90% mostly because I think that it will prove to be the most useful kind of Silver to have overall. Whether one is talking about fractional Silver, barter, or long-term collectible or numismatic value, I think the 90% is going to prove superior. I can already see in my 15 years of stacking how things have changed just during that time. Things used to be much more common and available, and today they are far less so. When I first started, you could still actually stack Barber coins fairly easily, but now even some of the worst condition Barbers are in flips and carry a definite numismatic premium that wasn't necessarily there 15 or 16 years ago. In addition, the prices are vastly higher than during the past, and I'm relatively confident that the prices aren't ever really going to go back down for 90%. I'm never going to be buying good condition Mercury dimes for $1.25 or $1.50 again. I'm never going to be buying good condition Morgan and Peace dollars for $15 to $18 again. Even if the Silver price itself were to drop back into the teens, I really don't think that you'd see most 90% Silver come out for sale during those times. As far as I am concerned, regardless of the spot price, 90% will always be getting more rare and more valuable over time. If the value of that doesn't accrue to me, then it will be beneficial to my wife and/or my son when I'm gone. Converting the remaining value of my fiat back into real money is probably in my top 3 list, as it relates to the best things that I could possibly be doing with my currency in the current context. I only purchase on-line occasionally, when I can't find something that I want to send out for Christmas, but I stay away from that for the most part. It's just too expensive, and typically I can find what I want at the LCS, if I'm patient. They always have Gold and a variety or Silver coming through their hands. I just picked up 3 very good condition old 80s Prospector rounds, and I'll be going back this week to see if they have anymore. Sorry I haven't been commenting much lately, but this was a great video!

My father left me silver in the form of 90% quarters and halves. It was hard for me to purchase older coinage at first. The first time I purchased Constitutional silver it was 13X FV. I think those days are long gone. I wish I stacked more of course. I'm not in the same ballpark as your 90% stack. Amazing job btw, that stack is a great accomplishment! 1:33 It saddens me to know that 7 years ago I had a stack of 90% that put that image to shame, seriously dwarfing it. I still rival it, but it's a pale echo of what was. I had several large tackle boxes full of the stuff, more than I could pick up at once, I had a goal of my body weight in silver and was 2/3rds of the way there.
    The issue currently (2023) is that the premium on 90% (per ounce) exceeds even that of Silver Eagles and other government issued bullion coins. I don't expect that to decrese significantly, and won't be surprised to see it increase in the future. But, likely on both buying and liquidating.
    But, as stated, they don't make 90% any more. The supply is actually diminishing over time. This is where supply & demand enters the picture. And so, I expect that going forward in time, the premium on 90% will continue to outpace that of more current products, even current governmentally produced coinage.
    At some point, down the road, the metal content of even "common date" 90% US coinage may become secondary, as it is currently with numismatic silver coins.
    I see no reason to habitually append "constitutional" to the 90% coinage. Seems really nationalistic and unnecessary. There's too much association of backwoods survivalists with silver stackers who aren't fruitcakes. US 90% coinage is desireable globally (OMG did he say "globally"?).

    • @SilverStruck
      @SilverStruck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Earlier on in my stacking journey I admittedly over-looked stacking US 90% silver in any great quantity. At the time, I was mainly stacking ASE's and silver bars mostly. US Constitutional silver has been in higher demand the last few years for sure. Many stackers and collectors across the globe see value in our older silver currency-100% agree with you on that point. As of late silver prices and premiums are dipping and I think they may continue to dip for a while. I'm hearing some stackers acquire Constitutional silver for 17X FV- prices that have not been seen in years now. If the premiums erode much more, it will be a great time to accumulate. As the years tick on and the available inventory of Constitutional silver decreases, I think the future values will have a lot of upside. Thank you for watching my video and taking the time to leave such a well thought out comment!

      There is another multiplier you can use to figure out how much silver you have. The video would have been too long if I went over that part. For speed and ease the 1.40 is a quick way to think of the silver weight.

  • @mikhailkalashnikov4599
    @mikhailkalashnikov4599 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with the local cash deal concept. If however, you come into a windfall (sell some realestate or whatever), online dealers are the quickest and most efficient way to move that money out of the banking system cleanly. For junk, just divide the face value by .715- that's really the most efficient and widely accepted formula to use. BUT, buying junk by face value is more to the advantage of the seller than the buyer. Those old worn out and slick coins are a black hole for your money. Much better to weigh the lot, divide by 25 grams, then multiply by agreed face value. This is the truly fair method for both parties (25 grams is supposed to be the net weight for any combination of $1 FV, excluding dollar coin.) Don't fondle your junk! 😆

    • @SilverStruck
      @SilverStruck  ปีที่แล้ว

My thought is humans are always subject to political jargon where as ideas like liberty should always be held high. That is a great question Culture and a hard one to answer. I've always felt taking historical characters out of their time period and holding them to modern standards is unfair. Washington is a great example of this. America's forefathers have been drug through the mud in the past few years. Similar issue occurs with having a Queen or King on the coin, some are offended with such imagery. Of course coins with the current King on them are all modern. Here in the US, we have not placed recently sitting Presidents on coinage. Not sure if a Nixon Quarter would be well received by the public, lol! I believe Washington, Franklin, Lincoln, Kennedy and others that either founded the country or made the ultimate sacrifice should be honored and remembered on our Nations currency- imperfections aside. However and to your point...one of the most popular releases by the US Mint in recent years is the Liberty metal (series). A Bronco and the rising sun- most Americans can get behind that image. As of last week I was able to pick up SLQ's and Barbers for 18.5X FV and a few months ago I was charged 30X FV because those items are more of a premium vs the Washington's, etc. I heard of some stackers getting 17X as well. Pricing has dropped like a rock in a matter of months. The ASE's have come down big time as well- as you pointed out. Constitutional was good when it had no to little premiums.
    Nowadays american stackers should avoid ASEs, 1/10 Gold Eagles and Constitutional and buy metals that come with a reasonable premium instead.
    Only buy this stuff if you are a collector an don 't expect to ever be able to sell your coins for more than you paid.

    • @SilverStruck
      @SilverStruck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You make a good point for sure. I view the current price of 90% silver the same way I look at the ASE- both have a premium that is too much. The difference is that the ASE is made every year while the Constitutional silver has not been struck in 59 years. So, that said, I do believe there is a lot of upside potential in 90% in the future and that is why I continue to stack it. Only time will tell what Constitutional will sell for down the road.

      @@SilverStruck Well, as I life in europe I probably have a different perspective. Here I can find 1/10 gold eagles for 12% and random year ASEs for less than 30% over spot. Most non-numismatic european constitutional coins -that also haven't been minted for decades- sell for 10 to 30% over spot as not many people seem to be intereseted in them. But I agree with you that US-Constitutional-silver prices could go up, if more americans believe that these coins will be the best silver for bartering during the apocalypse. If demand rises, so will the price...

    • @SilverStruck

      I see what your talking about. That is a concern I do not hear about from many other stackers. The coins can be easily authenticated at the LCS or with home tests such as the ping test. Having some 90% on hand will diversify your stack and give you the best option for fractional silver out there, imo.

    If you paid $30.10/oz., I think you really overpaid - unless by miracle you got some coins that had some extra numismatic value.
    A few weeks ago I was at one of NYC's premiere auction houses and asked about constitutional, i.e., "junk" silver.
    They told me during that visit that they bought at 14x face and sold at 22x face.
    The silver spot price on that day was about $0.60 higher than it is today as I am typing this.
    I sold them a handful of common date quarters (in terrible condition) for 14x face, i.e., $3.50 each.
    Having just watchd this video I decided to send them an email asking them what they are currently charging now that silver has dropped since that visit.

    • @SilverStruck

      It's totally possible I paid too much. I will say my LCS was at 25XFV a few weeks ago, so when he dropped the price I decided to pick some up.
