      Totally, a way too high barrier of entry, especially considering how many download-only games there are in comparison to physical games. I love my Vita, but I can't bring myself to buy a 64GB card at the prices they're found, even when my 32GB has been full for a long time.

    • @Azariachan
      @Azariachan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How do you even manage to fill up the memory card? My Vita came with an 8GB card and I bought an additional 32GB one and I've never managed to fill the second one up. If you only keep games you're actually playing installed and buy physical copies of games instead of downloading from the PS Store, there's no way you'll ever run out of space. The memory cards have nothing to do with Vita's failure, the lack of software does.

    • @mxev9626
      @mxev9626 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dairunt, the memory card cost contributed bit wasn't the sole factor, it just added to Vita's cost but dramatically (I have 16GB and I don't need a bigger one).
      "Big" games sell the system, while "smaller" ones don't have that much of an effect, they come later, when the developers see that the system has sold well and there is a large enough market to cover the development costs and derive profits.
      Killzone, Uncharted, Persona - stuff like these are the flagship products that make people want to buy Vita. Games produced by small teams, however great gameplay they might have, don't exhibit the same influence. And it's true that the more powerful the hardware is the more man-hours (and therefore money) it takes to produce a game that utilizes it fully (compare, say, the credit rolls of MK1 and MKX); at the same time when buying powerful game system people expect the games to demonstrate this power.
      P.S.
      Also, I think that Monster Hunter series moving to Nintendo played a huge role (see above about the games that sell the system).

    My boyfriend has a Vita, and it's fantastic. It's audio is way louder than any 3DS, it has amazing graphics and touch screen function that surpasses the 3DS, and the ability to use it as both a screen and controller for the PS4 is really handy for bathroom breaks or when someone wants to watch tv instead of a game. That said, I would never buy one.
    Every handheld Nintendo ever made has bordered on indestructible. I've dropped my 3DS a few times, and it's come out unscathed each time. The Vita, on the other hand, took one fall and the screen shattered. 3DS's can also have their storage upgraded way more easily, with owners being able to use any old SD or MicroSD card lying around their house for additional storage, whereas the Vita needs Sony's own kind of memory stick and come in relatively low sizes. As mentioned in the video, Nintendo has a huge supply of games for all their handhelds, but the Vita's own pool is lacking, with most of the good games being on PS4, meaning you have to buy the more expensive home console game AND the console to play it on. The internet browser is great on the Vita, where even the New 3DS browser is lacking, and porn does look considerably better on the Vita than it does on the New 3DS, but I'm not going to shell out that much money for a porn screen for when I'm not near my computer.
    The PS Vita failing is due to a cocktail of failures, which is a huge bummer because it has so much going for it.

      valcliff b Yeah, and Nintendo has always made really solid handhelds with just a few (Gameboy Micro) that may have been less than super, but still pretty quality. I've had the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance SP, three DS Lites, a 3DS and a New 3DS, and all of them I've been super happy with. They cost less money, have a huge selection of games, and have had a lot of backwards compatibility throughout the years. Their bread and butter series like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon have been pretty strong through all the handhelds, and it's only getting better with console series getting shrunk down to fit the New 3DS, like Monster Hunter, Super Smash Bros, Xenoblade, Dynasty Warriors, etc.

      Steve Cozzens Bad marketing, non-existent third party support, unreasonable launch price, a terrible name that confused the console's demographics and games that came out way too late in the console's life span. The cherry on top was the system's specs, they were barely better than average on release, and borderline obsolete only a year later. Those factors spelt doom for the console.

      Because you can get a shitty android phone for $20 at Walmart that plays most the free to play crap with in app purchases on googlestore that a $300 phone can.
      It's the same thing that killed console gaming in the early 80's. A cheap over saturated market flooded with low quality shit.
      Why would you buy your child a $200 handheld plus expensive memory cards when you can get them a cheap phone? Not that a few parents don't buy their kids iphones as well. Kids grow up with phones not handhelds, kids go to phones when they want to play a game instead of handheld or console for that matter.
      Also most people just don't care about gaming outside of downloading some bejeweled clone of an app store.

      Yeah, but most games on the phone are specifically designed for the phone. Just like any other game is designed for a specific platform. I don't think it would dominate leaving other modes obsolete.

    • @acethebest6028
      @acethebest6028 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What does "Tiger Electronics" mean?
      I think cellphone games are ruining this industry.
      The PS Vita is such a great system and it could have been such a big success if it weren't for cellphone games.
      The 3DS is a good system too and it too has sold less the it's predecessors the DS and the Gameboy due to the rise of cellphone games.

      Oh sorry about that ummm..... Tiger Electronic games were those cheap toys that you play a built-in game on that uses the same technology as an old calculator. They were popular because no one could afford a gameboy.
      And phone games are not "ruining" the industry. It has certain tools to play certain games. People play for the games. And it introduces people to these types of games. No one will play chess if they wanted to play checkers. But they might try chess if they had their fill on checkers.

      But the thing is that the vita was released in 2011, and the switch was released in 2017. What was expensive then is cheap now, which might be why Nintendo can put more games on the system then Sony as Nintendo does not have to spend anywhere near the hundreds of millions Sony spends per game. Plus in 2011, the indie scene was much smaller, and now many of the switches most successful games are indies that don't need big hardware or budgets. Plus, because the hardware was good enough to port many of the successful PS4 and Xbox games to the switch while it rarely happened on the Vita.

    Just port the old playstation library onto the the Vita. That is all Sony needed and still needs to do. Make the Vita into a time machine for games that you can't buy anymore and you will have people all racing to buy your console. Also drop the price of memory cards, there is no reason that they need to be so expensive.

      DjStiv3 Ya the Vita failed because of Sony's incompetence. I was actually planning to buy one soon but then Sony announced that they were dropping all first party support for the Vita and I lost all interest in the thing. Dropping support for a device when it is not successful is not a good way to instill consumer confidence and because of that any successor to the Vita will likely have a much harder time succeeding thanks to this.

    • @akyde6003
      @akyde6003 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Gameboy did need Pokemon lol, and apart from some crappy puzzle games most people's GBA and DS libraries don't seem to go any further than Pokemon.
      The 3DS can basically thank Pokemon for it's sales even before it's first released game due to it's support of the older DS games and due to the fact that you'd obviously see a Pokemon games on the new hardware.
      Is it worth mentioning how much S&M alone brought in within the 2 months it's been out?
      If they killed Pokemon the platform would be dead.

    • @El8MAGNATE

      The DS didn't need pokemon, it had Brain Training or Brain Age, Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing. All those games except Animal Crossing sold more (some of them more than double) than Diamond and Pearl.
      MArio Party and Mario 64 sold more than Black and White and Platinum, not even talking about Black and White 2.
      Pokemon sales in nintendo ds were good, but I don't think it moved up considerably console sales. Brain Training and Nintendogs certainly did more for it to succed.

      Yeah, but if they had the same library, then the PS4 and PS Vita-as well as the games’ respective versions-would have eaten into each other’s sales. They could have tried cross-saving, but people would have gotten really mad if they had to pay for a game twice to get that feature.
      They could have built less powerful games, but the Vita was marketed as a portable with console power, which would harm the perception around less good-looking games because “this isn’t what I paid for;” even if good games are more important than graphics, those graphics still matter.

      It isn't like the company has to choose between having games that made full use of the hardware and ports and basic games that did not. You can provide both.
      Another thing you could do is sell the game for both systems at once. These systems have hard drives for downloading games. You buy a Vita game and get a code for a free copy of the PS4 etc. version to download. Like how some movies sell with both a DVD and Blueray disk, except one would be full digital download. You could eve do it with PS3 and PC games, buy this game ported to Vita, and get a free digital copy of the same game for another platform. Thus you get a library to use on it for the cost of porting.
      Of course you don't stop there, you also develop some unique games for it, but having a list of fun ported games to play on your handheld would have certainly helped keeping people buying the system and preventing any death spiral.
      Add in that cross saving you mentioned and you could really work both system so they boost each other instead of working against each other. Cross platform multiplayer compatibility can't hurt either.

      soccerthepkmnmaster I'm pretty sure any 3rd party would want their old "removed from market" games resold again, even if they only get a few pence per copy sold, Just think, sony could develop a decent and reliable PS1 and PS2 Emulator within a few short months. Once they have this they can rip old games into a special vita only rom and create "new" vita games in minutes, then they would have a library of thousands of games in no time. They could put the old PS1 games on the playstation store for £2, old ps2 games for about £4 each, They could even create an emulator for the PS4, there are a few games I would like to play again and would be willing to pay a few £ for a trip down memory lane. Lets face it, the Vita is easily powerful enough to emulate ps2 games, perhaps even some early ps3 games. I used to have an old Hacked Xbox with a snes emulator on it, I spent hours playing that thing.

      I wasn't doubting the vita can emulate old PS games. So face what? :/
      Vita does has a memory problem, PS2 games are around 4GB, PS3 10GB.
      Problem is: Do the developers want to do it?
      They don't, they don't feel 40 thousand-ish dollar is worth all the trouble it takes to get old games on the vita.
      Emulating SNES games are easy, PS2/3 on the other hand are not.
      PS1 is possible, but they just don't feel like wasting their time.

    • @Nickgowans

    I came here to argue for the VIta, which I love. But end up agreeing. It's a great system and the 4 or 5 games I play on it I LOVE. Deception, MLB, Persona 4, Digaea, Everybody's Golf, Little Big Planet
    As for Phone gaming. It's not for me. Screens too small, and the control way too imprecise for someone with my hands. Always dragging the wrong thing, dragging nothing at all, dragging two things when I only wanted one, not get a response to a screen click... I struggle to game with any accuracy on my Ipad never mind the tiny screen on my Iphone . Even then, most of the games are pretty much like Flash or Java games from the PC circa 2005. Don't like touch screen gaming full stop actually.

      The so waited remake for almost 15 years, they released it in a Phone, in a phone instead of 3DS.
      It's a giant mess, the graphics are watered down, the sprites looks terrible and the transparency effect will make you throw the game down..

      For me the Vita has become an indie and JRPG machine. Also, I never owned a PSP so I've dug considerably into that back catalog. And while there are definitely 3DS games I love, that system just isn't near as comfortable for me to use; it always makes my hands hurt.
      I don't like touch screen gaming either. But I don't see it as a lesser platform necessarily, just not one I enjoy as much. I have been playing FFVI on my iPad and despite all complaints being absolutely true I still enjoy it. But I'd still MUCH rather see a FFIV: Complete Collection-style release of FFVI for my Vita. But that's just not going to happen.
      Personally I can live with it being the "Portstation" Vita. There's a lot of PS3/PS2/Indie games that I would never play / have played if not for the Vita, and that will continue to be the case. I bought Rogue Legacy on Steam and put about 5 hours into it; I bought it again on Vita and have already played 2 or 3 times that much in a matter of days.

      Not me. The problem with the phone isn't the games catalogue - it's the control method. While Vita does sometimes use touch surfaces, the main control method is the sticks and it has proper buttons
      I just can't get on with phones. I'm always missing the item I want to click, items not dragging, 2 items dragging at the same time, the wrong item dragging. I find that hard on my Ipad and all but impossible on my Iphone. I know quite a few commuters (train commuters) who do the same, and for the exact same reason.
      Yes I know it's me as most people get on well with touch screen gaming, but I, along with a sizable minority - don't.

    While it's true with the Vita, the whole "specs don't matter" isn't really true overall. For example: Wii U's low specs were quite a huge problem even for Nintendo's own titles like Splatoon and Zelda because specs are not only graphics but also determine what is possible to make gameplay-wise.
    That's the reason why New 3DS exists. What's needed is good balance between specs, development costs and price.

      Not gonna act like I know everything about hardware in detail, so I showed this comment to someone I know who is an expert on hardware and they could barely even believe how false it is.
      To sum up:
      Splatoon uses most of Wii U's resources. Wii U doesn't even have an ARM gpu/cpu (3DS has it). It has a 3 core PowerPC RISC processor which is an APU one (both GPU/CPU) and everything runs on it. Splatoon couldn't not run on 2 Gflops. FRN isn't ported to Switch because there'll be a sequel.

      Czaros Mooncat What you are saying is false very little games released even on launch day. They failed to attract customers upon release leading to little sales in the long run as competitors offered more software. Specs don't matter man get out your bubble no one really cares it's 2016 good graphics are the norm and the Wii U and 3ds offered that whether u like it or not. Out dated? Maybe but u also have to understand the production costs and practicality. Some people need to understand more how marketing works. Nintendo is amazing at it but there target market is not that great. That's another reason why the Wii U failed because they were targeting younger children rather than adults. U have to consider many factors in the business world it's not as easy as making a product and selling it, Pricing promotion, and Distribution also play a role. I can go on and on but I hope u get my point.

      I only mentioned this thing specifically here. There are A LOT of other reasons why Wii U failed. Mostly Nintendo's dumb decisions, horrible marketing that didn't even make clear it's a new console, unused but forced-on gimmick, lack of third party, broken promises (appeal to hardcore, two gamepads, good online services) etc.

    Watching this video, I thought it was pretty old when he said "The Vita has far less games than the 3DS". This video, from june 25 2014, seems to claim that there are 8 vita games for every 15 3DS games. A quick search (25 seconds) ot some fun results:
    As of June 24th, there are 642 PSVita games, and as of April 8th, there are 504 3DS games.
    It seems that people who bitch that there aren't any Vita games are people who refuse to look for/find them... I have 2 32GB memory cards because I have so many games... 11 physical copies, and 37 digitally-downloaded games (which excludes all those I got free from Playstation+)... I have no idea what this guy is talking about, but he clearly likes 3DS more than PSVita.

    Anyway, 3DS sales pretty much only go up when Nintendo releases a Call of Dut... err, Pokémon game.

      ***** For what system?
      shane vergeront Yes, but the only advantage of having a 3DS over a DSi is the 3D screen. If you're going to play DS games, might as well use a DS IMHO... I have a PSVita, but that doesn't mean I threw my PSP in the garbage. I still have it to play all my PSP games, so retro-compatibility isn't really an issue to me...
      Pro Poe Yeah, I bought my 3DS go buy Kid Icarus. But it seems to me that the *only* worthwhile Nintendo games are those published _by_ Nintendo... Third-party titles are kind of overlooked, Indies are kind of overlooked, and those are the ones who take risks. Yes, things like a 3D screen and a screen on the WiiU controller are risks too, invations if you will, but it's not the game content that's changing, it's the _way_ you play the game that's changing.

      I would like you to meet the Circle Pad. It is complete god-send. Also, improved battery life, more GREAT exclusive 3DS games, and a larger eShop library. It also has more data storage, but that generally holds true after each generation. Plus, the 3DS dos have a lot Japan only games, but there is a much greater ratio of World-Japan Only titles when compared to the Vita.

      The 3ds has sold 20 million in Japan over the vita's 4,5 million proves that Japanese gamers more go for 3ds and they have games that sadly get good reviews there but sales numbers not enough to sell in the west and if American consumers want some of those Japanese games. The problem was Sony told the devs to forget vita games and focus on making games for ps4 to ensure it was successful. That choked off the flow of quality 3rd party multiplat and original games for vita AND ps3. And these crazy memory card prices didn't help matters, either.

    • @MaJuV
      @MaJuV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, in reality only the hardcore gamers want "graphics", and those probably did buy the Vita (or maybe not, thinking that they could get even better graphics on PS4).
      Most gamers actually just want fun games. There's a reason why games like Shovel Knight, Minecraft and Undertale sold like hotcakes and it sure wasn't graphics.

      Those three were good despite not looking good, and they were tried out of desperation. I was one of the vita buyers who wanted games AND graphics. The 2 CAN coexist...no idea why people keep saying stuff that imply that they think otherwise.

      Rhiorrha Of course they can coexist. I never claimed they couldn't coexist. And the games that do bring the two together could as well be the best games to play on the Vita (I don't know, I don't own one).
      It's not that people don't want amazing graphics (nobody's going to reject them if offered). But most people don't care whether an amazing game has amazing graphics, average graphics or pixelated art. It's the end experience that counts.

    Here's what I would've done different with the PlayStation Vita if I were Sony:
    - instead of cards, games would've come on Super UMDs, which would be based of Blu Ray Discs similar to how UMDs were based off DVDs. You would also be able to use existing PSP UMDs on the Vita
    - instead of expensive proprietary memory cards, use the universal Memory Stick Duo or SD card standard for game saves and downloaded games!
    - provide a very strong 1st party lineup, with new exclusive entries in many 1st party franchises
    - if EA still fail to deliver and make every Fifa last year's game with this year's transfers, revive the World Tour Soccer series and acquire the CFL (Canadian Footbal League) license and use that to revive GameDay
    - add 4G support to later model systems
    - add 2GB onboard storage to all systems, meaning that memory cards would only be needed if one wants more storage
    If you have any other ideas, I'd like to hear them

      ***** However, they could incorperate a system similar to the Crossbuy system for the people that actually kept their PSPs and physical copies that want to transition into the Vita.
      Some provide codes, but other have the crossbuy feature on the physical copy, but those codes would no longer be good once used. There's even a menu setting dedicated to this form of crossbuy on the PS3. Plus, if you are using the same PSN account, any PSP digital game you already bought could potentially be reobtained for your Vita this way. The PSP already used a very similar OS like the PS3. It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to pull something like this off.

      i dont agree, look how many bought an iphone 6 or a samsung galaxy S6 or 7 at way higher pricing. Mobile stuff is expensive and what truly and honestly killed it in my opinion is that backwards ass attitude of having propietary stuff integrated in the system. Lets be honest here, if the vita had a micro sd instead of the ever so expensive psvita mem card, everyone would have jumped to this handheld. It showed in the psp having sd to produo adapters.

      tjeulink there's no argument there, for sure. I know for a fact that the vita is almost ps3 quality in its games, I'm happy to own one. But when you want a handheld, you want it to hurt your wallet less than its big brother. The use of propietary technology, meant more development, more money to spend in things that could have been solved with a cheaper alternative that it was just as good and cuts cost. I believe and will still persevere on that conjecture that the psvmem card was its Achilles heel because the 3DS at launch costed the same and sold more because not just the games but the investment was quite a bit less than the vita.

  • @Kao108
    @Kao108 10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    That whole argument is fucking bullocks
    If it was true, we wouldn't be seeing a fucking tidal wave of indie games being made or ported to the vita months after months after months. Console specs don't matter, because it doesn't stop a developper to make just a game that he wants, nobody who owns a vita absolutely DEMANDS that you push the hardware to it's limit, mostly that the game is good and meaty enough.
    The reason the vita failed is because Sony utterly just didn't know how to market it, still doesn't, and that SCEA did a shitty job in general in advertising, making games and making ports for the system. That and absolutely insane memory card prices, a long draught with no games with one year late behind the 3ds

    • @DrROBschiz
      @DrROBschiz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly. They never continued momentum and support. They didn't address criticisms and concerns (they still avoid talking about the memory cards and even lie about them). • @HyperSonicN1
      @HyperSonicN1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you didn't get the point.
      Sony advertised the Vita as a portable console with the power of home consoles, and therefore games with great graphics and such. This means that games with great graphics are what people will try to find on the system. Indie games do not use the full graphical potential of the Vita, and therefore aren't what people expect from it. Really good looking games like the Uncharted game for Vita were what people were looking for, but they require AAA budgets, which leads to what they say in the video..

      Turtoi Radu ***** You're absolutely missing my point.
      Extra credits dudes claim that the vita's main flaw is it's spec, that it's too expensive to make games for it, etc...to which I point out that the real reason the vita failed is sony's ineptitude in the first place to take it's thumb out of it's arse, like Nintendo did when the 3ds was also being dead in the water after it's release, and make some fucking software, to entice other people to make fucking software
      If the system was so expensive to make games for, there wouldn't be as much indies who can simply port their stuff to it. And to be honest, in this day and age, the difference between a 3d asset for the 3ds and the 3d asset for the vita is not some huge gap, only if you port from the former to the latter but that barely happens.

  • @Holyniwa

    That's a stupid mentality.
    Like, okay I KNOW graphics are a pain to make. It takes money. But why would any dev need to use 100% of the VIta's hardware? If they had made games at 50-75% of the Vita's power, it would have been enough. I know it is weird to say this, but just because a console is super beefy, doesn't mean you need to take full advantage of it. This is Nintendo's mindset. Their consoles are the weakest at the moment, but having amazing lineups. Why? Because they go for quality in gameplay, over quality in graphics. And it works. People said the 3DS and WiiU were gonna flop, and for a while it looked like it was, but now... no one can argue that the WiiU is 2014's MUST HAVE console, specially coming into the 2015.
    Though to be honest, the number 1 reason I didn't want to invest into a Vita is because of the lack of cartridge games. They thought that digital distribution was going to be the future, and it didn't turn out that way. I WANT PHYSICAL GAMES, not some digital download, on my shit internet connection!

      Here's the problem, when people know what the Vita is capable of, they are not going to settle for a game that looks as if it was a "lazy" creation. A few of us would know better and recognize that it costs a lot to develop, but most people would think that the developers are bad.

    • @25ased
      @25ased 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You are right. But the reason why devs would think that they need to use most, if not all of a consoles capacity is because of their reputation. If they don't make the game look as good as it can, people are gonna bash the game and say that the devs were cheap and didn't try. That could hurt sales even more.
      Besides, Vita already has a higher price point and no 3D, if it doesn't have good graphics, what does it have left to compete against the 3DS with? We payed the extra money on the console to get prettier games, so they should use the hardware we payed for. i wouldn't wanna pay for a 250$ machine that only uses the capacity of a 150$ machine when I can just buy a 150$ machine in the first place.
      Ultimately, Vita failed because Sony fucked up. All their previous consoles (PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP) sold good, great or amazing, so they got over confident and thought that 3rd party devs would line up for Vita just because it's a Sony console. They didn't plan ahead properly, they just threw a portable PS3 out with nothing over the 3DS and expected it to sell.

      Effort is noticeable in any game, I have recently played tales of xillia which is a LATE gen PS3 game and it has mostly underwhelmed me visually. I didn't expect to be blown the fuck away, but it is clear that there wasn't much love or care put into the game. Compare this to the previous game in the series that started off on the Wii and got ported to PS3, the upscaled models and most of the game looked very Wii, but the presentation and cleanliness displayed makes me enjoy the visuals a hell of a lot more.
      In general a well versed player can see where the effort went in, and I don't think many vita games looked like they had the attention they needed. Not saying some did, but I recall when being shown super mario 3d land for the first time and just gawking at how much they bothered to put in on the game, nothing on the vita apart from maybe tearaway gives me a first impression of someone making a hell of an experience with devotion.

    As a Vita owner, one who may enjoy it even more than the 3DS (especially considering the drought the 3DS is going through in 2014), i'd also add that Sony's lack of understanding of portable gameplay was what truly began the spiral into the mess the Vita is stuck in. There are some very unique titles made by their studios (Tearaway, Gravity Rush, etc.), but most of their major releases feel like downgraded titles you could find on a PS3/4. There is a fundamental difference in how portable play functions as opposed to consoles. Console and PC games tend to be for longer stretches of time, often with friends online. Portable games tend to be designed with a pick up and play mentality, titles which you can play for 5 minutes while being driven to school, relaxing on break and so on. That difference, along with Sony marketing the console as a home console experience on the go, were the first major steps that they took down the stairs to the dreary basement where the Vita now dwells.
    Probably where that Bioshock Vita game is hiding too, come to think of it.

    • @joesatmoes
      @joesatmoes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. If people wanted 'Console Quality', they'd have a console. If they wanted portable games, they'd want it to be driven more by good gameplay mechanics that you can play in short segments and not be too bothered if you have to stop- Pokemon is a great example. But the games on the Vita are mainly ports from the PS3, so they are meant to have much longer play sessions.

    • @imoutofnames1
      @imoutofnames1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is my major issue with the Sony handhelds. They advertise them as the home console on the go where as Nintendo specifically wants you to have your own separate experience on their handhelds. You never feel like you are playing a downgraded version of the games you already own on your Gamecube/Wii/Wii U where as Sony has basically been trying to sell PS3/PS4 lite.

    • @Drownedinblood
      @Drownedinblood 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      So why even buy a handheld? The games you are describing are your run of the mill phone games. Pick up, play 5 mins at a time, yea I think that describes phone games. Do you pick up and play Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem, or Phoenix Wright? I know there is a thing called pause, sleep mode, or save. The Vita has these features you know, it's not like you start a game on Vita and you must play through everything in one sitting.

    • @Drownedinblood
      @Drownedinblood 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      joesatmoes Try bringing your console with you, yea that's a problem isn't it? I'm tired of this handheld for handheld only and console for console only. With today's tech, it's possible to start mixing the two, so why not?

    • @imoutofnames1
      @imoutofnames1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is nice to play console quality games on the go but it doesn't benefit you to advertise as home console lite.
      Yes there are some people who will go "wow! I'm playing games just like on my PS4 while I'm on the go." But ultimately taking that route has you not only competing with other handhelds but yourself.
      If I owned a PS4 and a Wii I could buy a Vita and play PS4 games on the go and I could play basically PS3 games on the go. Or I could buy a 3DS and have my own experience that is distinct from the home console.
      Take, for example, Zelda and God of War. Both are on a handheld and home console. Console Zelda has taken the 3d world route like Ocarina of Time where as handhelds have gone top down like A Link to the Past. Same IP different experience, you don't feel like you are playing a wii lite, you feel like you are playing your own system designed to be its own entity.
      God of War on the other hand is the console version on the go. I am literally getting the same experience. The only difference is that one is portable.

  • @LittleJimmy835

    To all the people in the comments saying that EC "Has got it wrong with this episode", just look at it from a developers point of view.
    If you've got enough resources to make a AAA game, why wouldn't you just release it for consoles instead and reach a wider audience? If you only have a AA budget, why not make it for DS where the development costs are lower?
    "But why don't they just make a AA game for the Vita? They don't have to use the full specs!" you say. Firstly, there's the fact that gamers always get unjustly pissed of when a games graphics aren't up to a systems standards. Secondly, development costs are lower for the DS, and since it's too hard to port a game between DS and Vita, developers will just stick to the DS version.

    • @ToastyMozart
      @ToastyMozart 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm going to have to disagree with you on the last bit, for one of two reasons.
      1) I wouldn't necessarily say people's annoyance at underperforming visual fidelity is "unjust." Unless the game were to make clever use of one of the Vitas unique controls as a core gameplay mechanic, people would (possibly correctly) claim that the game could have just been made for the PSP, and that made their purchase of a new system was a waste of money.
      2) People (in my experience) only get enraged at graphical underperformance if they feel it's unjustified (see the recent firestorm over Ubisoft crippling the PC version of Watch Dogs for no good reason). If it's a good game that simply doesn't max out a machine because it doesn't have any asthetic need to, people won't care (owners of crazy powerful 290xs and Titans still praised Transistor, despite the game mostly consisting of a few 3D models moving inbetween two flat images, using around 4% of their system's total power).

    • @AusSP
      @AusSP 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the one place where it's rather viable is the Japanese market and localized games of the same. They can do consoles, but half of them are not the sort to really push graphical boundaries. So, being able to make a nice looking game, without being forced to compete with major PS4 releases, may seem appealing to them. Especially when the cost of porting an A-grade PS3 game to the Vita is apparently not much. That does seem to be the main source of non-indie Vita games at the moment.
      Well, that and multi-portable releases.

      KleinHendrixTheCool that is, essentially, the video, and the truth. Vita games are way better graphic wise and cost way more money to produce and will be way more expensive than the 3DS. Therefore less developers risk making games. More developers will make 3DS games because they cost less and are easier to make, therefore more 3DS games, cheaper games. People would rather pay for cheap than invest in expensive quality.
      Also applies to PS4/XB1. Why do you think PS4 is kicking the ever living shit out of the XB1? Because price. XB1 is more expensive because kinect, PS4 is simpler and doesn't cost as much, and even though it has better graphics, it's still beating the dead dog in sales.

The amount of hours alone you'll put into these titles alone makes the vita a worthy console. Not to mention you can use it to play on your PS4 remotely on any title, and even as an additional controller since the PS4 doesn't support the PS3 dualshock.
    It is my favorite handheld ever. Specially if you are lucky enough to get one with an OLED screen (I must really stress out that getting one with OLED screen is the way to go).

    People keep stating Pokemon as the reason the 3DS is successful and the Vita is a failure, but that's not the whole picture. In Japan at least, one of the main reasons the Vita isn't selling as well as it could have been was because Nintendo scooped up Monster Hunter. Japan LOVES Monster Hunter. Hell, the only 3DS two games that have sold more than Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS are Pokemon and Animal Crossing. The Vita would be much better off if it still had Monster Hunter, but alas,

    • @SethAbercromby

      Totally with you on that one. Monster Hunter is a real system seller and letting it wander off to Nintendo was a real miscalculation on Sony's end. Refusing to part MHP3rd to America/Europe hurt them more than it should have and led them to the wrong conclusion, wheras the ripoff (as in not nearly enough content to justify its price when compared to Freedom Unite/2nd G) on the Wii was, as expected by the fans, largely successful with the western audience and paved the way for a proper WiiU title and an upcoming 3DS release of 4.

    I'd still buy the vita. $200 for a brand new vita with borderlands 2? The 3DS can't touch that. The ps vita has plenty of games. The fact that it isnt selling well is a GOOD THING for buyers. Its not as expensive anymore. The memory cards are a joke though. Fuck you sony for doing that. Theres no denying the massive hardware advantage. If I'm buying a handheld system, I want graphics that my phone can't already offer. Thus, the ps vita is my choice. The vita has far less games, but the quality of its games far surpasses the 3DS. As I mentioned, borderlands 2. A true open-world game with beautiful graphics and hours of enjoyment. I'd say the BL2 bundle is reason enough to buy the vita anyway!

    One of the biggest reasons the Vita failed, as many have mentioned, was in fact the overpriced memory cards, having 3 and 4 times the cost of a standard SD.
    Sony has argued before, that the reason for the proprietary memory cards was to keep the security level high and to keep it from being hacked.
    *Problems* :
    1- Not only did the Vita eventually get hacked, it would have happened far sooner if it had half the sales and half the games of the 3DS. More people adopting the system, the bigger the hacking community. Regardless of how good the security was.
    2- The amount of *greed* Sony displayed with this memory card fiasco, eventually came around to shoot them in the foot. A story very similar to what happened to the Wii U.
    3- They *had* a chance to change this. Sony had a chance to fix this issue, even if it was a little late. Yes. With the release of the Ps Vita 2000, they *should* have switched to micro sd. At the very least, it would have easily boosted the sales of the system. But no. Sony wanted us to buy their expensive crap.

    Oh, how I wish more people could learn this lesson.
    As for the Vita, I'd hate to say it, but it was probably doomed from the get-go. Trying to deliver a quality AAA game on a handheld just seems too ambitious. Maybe it's just me, but I just can't see an Assassin's Creed or God of War game delivering the same experience on a handheld when compared to a console. And I don't think Sony ever really had the character stable or pull with handheld developers to really keep a continuous stream of games coming for it, especially compared to Nintendo. But the worst thing Sony did for the Vita in my mind was the big push for console interactivity. It makes it seem like less of a stand-alone gaming device, and more of a $300 accessory to a PS4, a belief that becomes even more damning when you consider that interactivity was pretty much all Sony talked about Vita-wise at E3 this year. A device should be able to stand on its own merits, not have to use a gimmick or attach itself to something bigger to be successful.

      Sony had already delivered the whole "console on the go" thing, with the PSP. There were 2 critically acclaimed God of War games, 2 MGS games, a KH game, 2 FF titles, one of which easily matches up, and beats all PS2 games. It already worked, so making it again didn't seem far fetched. What killed the system, was Sony's lack of marketing, those god awful memory card prices, and all of their studios basically ignoring the thing, like a red headed stepchild (all, but Studio Japan, thankfully). The console connectivity is a very cool concept, but due to the horrible state the system is in, it has become it's only propose.
      There's the Vita TV (or playstation TV, since fuck the Vita) coming out later this fall, which will hopefully give the system some life. Solves the whole aspect of the Vita's demographics gaming mostly on TVs, while giving it at a cheap price.

    • @cordia96
      @cordia96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrFinalgamer yep, marketing was non existend.
      But I think that the "portable version" of a franchise isn't really working for most. In almost every review for, say, God of War: CoO" or GTA VCS, phrases like "watered down version of the console game", "pretty decent for a handheld game".
      Nintendo keeps certain franchises handheld exclusive. Fans may want a real Pokemon game on the Wii(U)/GameCube etc, but Nintendo knows not to deliver that. Pokemon fuels (3)DS sales. Always. Or Professor Layton - DS exclusive. Yeah, there are portable Zeldas and Mario games, but Nintendo knows to keep some franchises exclusive to one system.
      On the PSP, gamers got versions of Peace Walker and Silent Hill Origins on the PS2. No need to buy a PSP for these games.

    reading through the comments on this video it alarms me how many mindless fanboys have come to watch EC, not a single person has posed a reasonable argument, every comment is "the vita didn't fail because I have one and I like it" or "the graphics on the vita are better so that means it was a success" worth mentioning that these comments are coming from the 8-12 year old child demographic who think that the thing in their hand right this minute cannot be bested. arguing that it's superior hardware means the ps vita was a blinding success, when. in reality it sold less than 10 million units, I would wager 20% of those sold where bought by people who wanted to remote play their ps4s. EC isn't a channel about taking sides in your silly console or handheld wars it's about looking at things from am unbiased analytical standpoint. This is why half of the titles released in 2015 are Japanese titles. And the other half are indie games which have been ported from the PS3, PS4 or PC. Name one AAA title scheduled for release in the next 12 months for the Vita? I have personally looked and I can't find anything. All the biggest developers have abandoned it because there isn't a big enough audience or profit margin to make it worth their time.

    While I love the vita I do agree with a lot of what is said in this video. Only issue is that the whole idea of portable games being cheap is actually rather interesting here in New Zealand where I come from.
    You see, here the roles are flipped. Sony actually charges prices for their games that are reasonable for that of a portable game and that aren't too expensive.
    NINTENDO THOUGH. Holy CRAP ever since I first opened the nintendo 3ds eshop I have hated these guys with every fibre of my being. The Eshop prices here in New Zealand are RIDICULOUS.
    Many MANY games cost 80 or even 90 dollars EACH. YES, SERIOUSLY. Games like Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus as well as other titles like SMT Soul Hackers and mario 3d land will set you back 90 DOLLARS while most other games that are actually worth playing will set you back 80 bucks. At this point it has become cheaper to buy titles physically but even then the prices are pretty insane.
    I have only bought 2 games for my 3ds for this reason alone. The games are just too damn expensive and don't warrent the nearly 100 dollar price tag they wave about due to being games designed for a portable system! I mean, you are paying about as much money for a physical copy of a next gen home console game when you buy something off the eshop.
    It's insane and frankly unacceptable.
    On the flip side, sony prices their stuff very well. Sure a handful of games are still expensive but none of them go beyond the 65 dollar price mark. Most digital download versions of games cost about 25 to 65 bucks and indie titles are even cheaper. While 60 bucks is still leaning into expensive territory I find that for a system like the vita that price is more acceptable. Plus 60 dollars for a portable game isn't too bad in the end. 80 to 90 dollars for a portable game however, is.
    Even the sales on the eshop are pathetic! I open it today and see that they are advertising an 18 percent price drop on a game. Only 18 percent? You cheapskates.
    I know that the eshop situation isn't as bad in other places but here in NZ it is TERRIBLE.
    Sorry for the long block of text but I just had to get this out there. Compared to other places game prices on the vita are simply more appealing than game prices on the 3ds

    I want games not specs god dammit.

  • @rafagd
    @rafagd 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Isn't your argument a bit flawed?
    I mean, higher specs don't imply higher quality and/or higher development costs. Unless the licencing fees and devkits, which you didn't mention, are pricier, there is no reason to a Vita game cost more than a 3ds game, if they are made to look the same.
    PC usually have better capabilities than consoles and still get tons of "ugly" games, why couldn't Vita devs do the same?

    • @DoubleATam
      @DoubleATam 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing is, most of everyone has access to a PC, and PCs vary very heavily in specs. But if you buy a new console, it'll have to be because of things only that new console could do. So, AAA titles have to pump more money into graphics so they can show it off more, otherwise they'd release the game on a weaker console.
      Frankly, because of this, I don't intend to buy either the PS4 or the Xbox One, because I'm afraid the situation will repeat. (And if the games get more expensive, well, my wallet isn't any deeper than it was before.)

    • @rafagd
      @rafagd 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tom0027X Just to clarify: I just used PC as an example of "we do have the specs, but we've choose not to push them to the limits (maybe to cut costs, maybe because we aren't experienced with the platform)".
      Also, 3ds was once a new console on the verge of flopping hard. What saved the console was Nintendo pumping out games until it recovered.

    • @DoubleATam
      @DoubleATam 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rafagd True, but again, they were able to pump out more games because they didn't cost as much as the Vita's.
      As for the PC, the real reason people develop for it is its relative availability and ease of development and publishing. Since most people who game already own a PC, there is no pressure to push its limits because the devs aren't trying to simultaneously coerce people into buying the only console their game is on.

    • @Xirbtt
      @Xirbtt 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rafagd "What saved the console was Nintendo pumping out games until it recovered."
      And to be totally frank with you, ONLY Nitendo can do that. Look at the Wii U, TONS of great first party games out on it now and coming out on the horizon, now look at sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbone. Maybe 1 or 2 exclusives max.
      I've just become comfortable with the fact that my vita will play obscure japanese role playing games and that's about it.

      The Vita 2000 with the bundled 8GB and a game is a step in the right direction but they seriously need to stop gouging for memory on a system that promoted the quick and easy purchase of digital content. No other provider of online digital content gouges customers on memory. Insanity

    "3DS has more games than the Vita"
    WRONG. As of this writing, Vita currently has 642 titles while the 3DS has 504 titles. This isn't including the psone classics and psp games that are also available on the Vita. Whenever I hear the argument that the Vita "just doesn't have games", I shake my head and look at the floor because what they're really saying is "the Vita doesn't have Nintendo games".
    However, I will concede that where the Vita ultimately failed was that it was too good of a system for a portable device. People don't want a PS3 in there pocket, they want fast and fun games. While the Vita definitely has the games to support that demand, Sony shot themselves in the foot by pushing the tech specs instead of what actually sustains a system: the games. Poor marketing coupled with the stranglehold that Nintendo has on the portable market means that the Vita was dead on arrival, which is unfortunate.

    • @AusSP
      @AusSP 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where are you getting your numbers?
      Not that I want you to be wrong, and not that I'm saying that the Vita doesn't have games - I have a small pile of game cases, a full memory card, and a fairly large list that says that I have far, far too many Vita games (and not even enough games to count on two hands for 3DS games) - but you pull out hundreds of titles, and I get confused. That's a LOT of titles to make claims about.

    • @dishwater63
      @dishwater63 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AusSP
      Unfortunately, the best place to find the list of games is from the questionable Wikipedia (For Vita: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_Vita_games, for 3DS: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_software). However, even if there's a fairly large margin of error, it's still not enough to justify implying that the Vita has a small, unsupported library of games.

    I'm not sure if this counts as irony, but some of the better selling and high-rated games on the Vita are ports of 3DS games. And as everybody else has said, there ARE more Vita games than 3DS games, just no really big reasons to get the Vita. People got the 3DS for Pokémon, Kid Icarus, Mario, Zelda, etc. People get a Vita for... What, Gravity Rush? Fun game, I will say, but it's one. And it's a small game. Also, the Vita in Japan tends to almost rival the 3DS when a great game for the Vita comes out (the recent Freedom Wars is apparently a good example. It was the best selling GAME world-wide, beating USA and Europe's best combined.) but then it lulls back down because the popular Vita games have lasting ability.

    Typically, Nintendo games require less graphical capacity than playstation games to look good, because of their style. Think Mario vs God of War. Nintendo almost never goes for the "realistic" look, but instead adopts a cartoonish style. Now think about the PS2 vs the Gamecube. The PS2 had the "better graphics", and yet, today, when both are obsolete, the Gamecube feels much prettier than the PS2. It's the same for handhelds, where the graphics are always subpar compared to the home consoles. The PSP might have MUCH better graphics, but it doesn't feel so much prettier.

    The Vita was DOA due to Sony's standard proprietary memory card nonsense. That is the crux of the issue. Even today, I wonder if I'd use a Vita if I was given one for free - and the answer is no because the fuck am I paying that much for storage space. Also, I'm not that much into JRPGs which is pretty much the only reason to own one in the first place.

    Coming from a Vita owner idk how much more they could hurt if they just dropped the price to $150, made the memory sticks affordable, and ported great games from the PS3 and PS2(They've ported a small hand full but by playing some it looked like they didnt even try to make it look good), to lure people into buying it and playing their classic games on the go. Nintendo has been doing it since the original Game Boy. So wtf is Sony doing. If i didnt have a vita already from launch id definitely buy one if it was bundled with any GTA game or any other classic PS2/PS3 game.

      I agree. Sony could do so much better with the Vita. Even the PS1 ports depend on Fans basically doing Sonys work for them. One of the problems is that Sony can't advertise just any game and port it. They need the publishers permission.

      They'd have to format the specific PS2 game to work on the Vita. A Vita beats a PS2, but not by much.
      A Vita is significantly weaker than the PS3 (it's sub-HD - 576p). They'd have to downscale the game to make it work.
