The unique access documentary Big Ben: Saving The World's Most Famous Clock tells the extraordinary story of the restoration work which took place on the iconic clock tower. The restoration project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the social and cultural history that the world’s most famous clock tower represents whilst charting the extraordinary craftsmanship of the people charged with the painstaking job of bringing this grand monument back to life for today, and for future generations.
Anna Keay, Director of Landmark Trust, goes behind the scenes on this massive project and talks to Parliament's principal architect and the three clock-makers who had the challenging task of taking the gigantic mechanism apart for the first time in nearly 160 years. The programme also examines the history of the clock tower and reveals how it was almost never built in the first place!
Using innovative filming techniques and the finest story-telling skills, the film delves into the rich history of Elizabeth Tower and reveals how a dedicated team of architects, engineers, clock makers, stonemasons, scaffolders…to name but a few of the experts, bring an iconic Victorian structure expertly and imaginatively into the 21st century.

Big Ben is the name given to the hour bell… the tower is from 2012 and shall be forever known as The Elizabeth Tower in recognition of Britains longest reigning Queen, in the year of her Diamond Jubilee, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in opposition to what is known as The Victoria Tower at the opposite end of HM Palace of Westminster aka Houses of Parliament
Being Irish myself, I do miss the late Queen Elizabeth II, having lived in the U.K. 23 years - her State Visit to Ireland and the Irish State Banquet at Windsor made me so very proud to be Irish - we have lost someone so very special 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
The tower is not "from 2012". It was renamed in 2012. 🙂

The tower is officially known as ''the Elizabeth Tower'!

When I first came to the U.K. in 2002 off a flight from Dublin, I recall finding myself standing directly underneath Big Ben at the stroke of Midnight, having also got lost halfway up The Mall and the noise of the bells of Big Ben scared the living daylights out of me - in the years since here in Manchester, I’ve become aware that the City Council has a similar clock and this is being refurbished, as well as the main Manchester City Council Chamber, which is a Victorian copy of the Houses of Parliament in London
The clock faces and hands was made in Wales at the Rhymney Iron Works also most of the metal structure.Benjamin Hall was from Abercarn in the old county of Monmouthshire. He was a Welsh Civil Engineer, St Tudors Church near Blackwood was destroyed by a fire and Benjamin Hall spent his own money to complety rebuild the Church.
£69,000,000 was spent in 2017-21 for restoration. This is a repeat. (But I watched it again anyway. God save The King!)

All the cast iron in side it holding it together was cast in my town in Merthyr Tydfil South Wales and that is fact,all come from Merthyr.

Please fix the title - you know the bell is called Big Ben, not the tower, and ESPECIALLY not the clock! Even the commentary is inaccurate. Guess we'll never change that.
Big ben is the most popular name of the tower although not correct they have likely named the documentary this to get views as a better name gets to more people
