    @grandadmiralzaarin4962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +159

    Juyo doesn't automatically give you an edge, it's extremely energy taxing(like Ataru with the acrobatics) and requires full offense at the expense of defense. Maul was able to win against Qui Gonn for a variety of reasons on Naboo, not least of which being that while considered a good duelist himself, Qui Gonn hadn't had to duel or seriously contend with another Force user since his former apprentice Xanatos. Qui Gonn was also 60 years old fighting someone half his age or younger and in much better physical shape and endurance. Jinn lost through a combination of fatigue, miscalculation and facing an opponent that had been trained his whole life to counter a Jedi specifically in a lightsaber duel. Maul actually employs Form III throughout most of their duel on Naboo during his tactical retreat, switching styles to catch Qui Gonn off guard.

    • @SoftisNelaris
      @SoftisNelaris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Maul wasn't trained in Form III, he was trained in Form VI Niman and Form VII Juyo. Most of the Duel of Fates was Maul using Niman to keep the Jedi at bay as he lured them towards the reactor core shaft. Also, he didn't necessarily switch forms to catch Qui-Gon off guard, but rather because he had now isolated him in a confined space so he no longer had to keep his options as open as before when he had to worry about two Jedi constantly trying to attack him from to different directions.
      Otherwise though, you're spot on.

    • @psychoticpurse6579
      @psychoticpurse6579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Another reason would be that Ataru isn't very good in confined spaces.

    • @Dragonfyre137
      @Dragonfyre137 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@SoftisNelaris Niman however is a hybridized form consisting of form I, III, IV and V. It's a mixed martial art, if you will. In order to master form VI you need extensive knowledge of form I, III, IV and V. Thus, it's very likely that Maul was also trained in the other forms. Form VII in turn typically requires a foundation in another form, since more than a form it's a mindset and in combat it relies on misdirection. During their first duel on Tatooine, Maul movements are very fluid, grounded and simple and looked like Form I, which suggests he didn't want to reveal his prefered form there. But on Naboo the acrobatics of Maul hint that he's using form IV as his foundation (particularly obvious due to his usage of kicks and jumps, which is typical for form IV). Also, to me it looks like more than defending, Maul is attacking Obi Wan and Qui Gon one at a time, constantly seperating them and taking on one at a time, which is also what a form IV practitioner would do due to the forms inherent weakness against multiple opponents. Also, after Obi Wan cut his saber in half, you see that he basically constantly stays on the move, attacking, jumping and spinning, which is a basic principle of Form IV.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Dragonfyre137 sort of agree, sort of disagree:
      Form 6 WAS a mix of the lower forms (excluding 2), but it did not require "an extensive knowledge" of them, per se.
      The point of Form 6 was that in a time of relative peace, Jedi could be taught Form 6 and gain a pretty good knowledge of it with little need to constantly practice long hours. This made it ideal for Jedi during an era when most of their battles were diplomatic ones and negotiating tables or as moderators to disputes and conflicts as a trusted third party. While it gave them access to a little of everything in the event they did get into fights, it was chiefly for people who didn't spend long hours training in lightsaber combat but, instead, training in history books and reading detailed breakdowns of trade disputes.
      So its entire purpose is/was that it DIDN'T require extensive knowledge or long hours of training.
      It was, as a result, the dominant Form in use at the outbreak of the Clone Wars, when the Jedi had been diplomats and negotiators for centuries and hadn't seen "real" combat (on the level of a protracted war or against a Force/Lightsaber using opponent) in centuries, or even millennia. This is also why so many fell at the outset of the war, particularly on Geonosis, because the form was not REALLY that great of a combat form against more than a handful of enemies for a very short fight where the Jedi's powers combined with their weapon (lightsaber) could quickly end the conflict. E.g. if the Jedi was the victim of an attempted mugging or a short tussle with a bounty hunter or wild predator animal.
      But against an army or skilled opponents, Form 6 was not particularly powerful. It gave the user a lot of options, but while it was very "wide" in scope, it did not have much "depth".
      ...but because of the variety, it was also the best jumping off point to learn the dual wielding or saberstaff styles.
      I think Maul's listed Form is Form 7, with obvious Form 6 input. Like Form 4, Form 7 is very acrobatic, hence the similarities.

    • @Dragonfyre137
      @Dragonfyre137 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@SubduedRadical I also have to partially agree. Yes, Form VI was easy to learn. But Cin Drallig himself pointed out that in order to trully master Form VI one should expect to need a decade of training in it. At its best, Form VI was unorthodox and unpredictable, but at its worst it was clumsy and unrefined. I think it's fairly reasonable that mastering the forms that Form VI builds on is at least a good foundation for mastering Niman, if not even a necessity, if you trully plan to use it as a duelling form. Otherwise, you end up like the Jedi diplomats, that merely scratched the surface of form VI and were content with only having rudimentary fighting skills. Focusing on Form VI without extensive knowledge of Form I, III, IV and V is like learning to play an instrument without learning music theory - it can only get you so far and at some point the foundation that you failed to learn will become a hindrance (been there, done that). Given that Maul was trained as a Sith Assassin I find it hard to believe that Sidious merely taught him Form VI, without at least some proper training in the other forms in order to have a solid foundation.

      IIRC, there were occasional mentions of practice blades in the old Expanded Universe that mostly just stung when hits connected.
      Of course, practice blades don't seem to have seen much use, since trainees often sparred with live blades anyway, even when they really shouldn't have. One book had a scene where a trainee screwed up the focusing crystal of her lightsaber, but the mistake wasn't caught until she and another student began sparring. When she moved to deflect a strike, her blade failed, allowing her opponent's lightsaber to pass cleanly through her block - and her arm.
      Someone once asked Lucas about the reason for all the dismemberments; his response was basically that when people play with swords, hilarity ensues.

      younglings dont train with lightsabers in dueling senerios. They'll use them in blind blaster bolt training, but the practice sabers they use are solid and more like vibroblades or stunsticks. Jedi don't get a lightsaber until they craft their own when they become a padawan.

If you can overwhelm him in massive bursts (which is intrinsic to sith lightsaber fights) you can beat him. But you’re chance of success is low and the only people that have beaten him are the duelests that are considered the best when it comes to offensive capabilities.

      @Pancakelord64 You can't call domeone like Obi-Wan Kenobi nearly impossible to defeat when there is a very long list of people who could defeat him. Yoda, Mace Windu, Darth Sidious, Darth Bane, Darth Malgus. Darth Nihilus, Exar Kun, Count Dooku, Tulak Horde, Marka Ragnos, Luke Skywalker, Plo Koon, all could have beaten him. This is just off of the top of my head and is not even close to a full list of people who could beat him. Mace Windu was nearly impossible to defeat, but not Obi-Wan.

      @@Matthew-Anthony Nah, that list is too big. If you include Kenobi at his best, he could beat most of those you listed. Video is correct in that Form 2 is best against Form 3, but Kenobi could defeat all but the best Form 2 masters, such as Dooku.
      Vs.
      Yoda - Honestly, if we're talking purely lightsaber fighting and not including force, I'm going to give this one to Kenobi. Form 3 is great against Ataru be of the tight controlled movements vs large expenditure of energy. Dooku lost to Yoda, but only just barely, and as a Form 2 practitioner, he should have lost hard to Yoda.
      Windu - This one goes to Windu quite obviously, although Kenobi likely would last a while. Much longer than anyone else.
      Sidious - At Keboni's height, he could last against Sidious but would ultimately lose because Sidious is just that god damn good.
      All the ancient Sith Lords - There's truly no way to know if he could beat these. It's pure speculation. However, if we're talking purely lightsaber combat my money's on Kenobi. As soon as it moves beyond that, like more force powers, Kenobi loses to most of them, but could probably still beat a few of them.
      Count Dooku - Dooku is a hard counter to Kenobi with his mastery of Form 2.
      Luke Skywalker - EU Luke, no. No one can. He's the marry suest character. Disney Luke? Absolutely.
      Plo Koon - No. Hard no. I don't know why you'd put him on this list. Kenobi and his mastery of Form 3 easily defeats most Form 5 users and masters of Form 5, like Anakin, still lose to him. No. Not even a little bit.
      If we keep it to those alive while Kenobi was alive that list is 2-3 people long. Sidious, Windu, and Yoda. If you really need to understand how ultimately badass Kenobi becomes then look no further than his final confrontation with Maul.

Soresu can tank any form, making the user invincible... but it’s key strategy was to wait for the opponent to tire out and find openings. Form II would be the best against form III, because just like Soresu, Makashi is about precision and using momentum... a form II master wouldn’t tire out so easily, and would be able to even find small weak spots in the soresu form of the opponent. As well as direct combat with them by just _Force pushing_ them straight at your enemies, you can ambush by maneuvering them in from above line of sight and triggering them while over you target.

      Bruh, if you're gonna cheat then cheat to win. All you need is a relatively fast droid equipped with 1- an energy shield (like a Droideka), 2- a high-output sonic weapon, and 3- a wide-spread flechette launcher. This setup works on every level; it's entirely and completely undetectable to the Force, bypassing the precognitive "danger" sense most trained Force users have. Sonic weapons are impossible to deflect with a lightsaber and cause havoc with virtually all biological lifeforms, inflicting not only the kinetic trauma on impact but also a severe blast of "sound" can be crippling in it's own right. Similarly, the flechette launcher (physical weapon) can't really be deflected in any meaningful way (it's basically a directed shrapnel gun) and even using the force to deflect the projectiles can be incredibly difficult because there are so many and they're so small.... Lastly, the energy shield is there only on the off chance that somehow the target gets a split-second of warning and knows an attack is coming.....
      In the pre-Disney era Expanded Universe there were several novels set in the Clone Wars era that introduced droids specifically designed in almost exactly the way I describe above for the express purpose of killing Jedi, and they were extremely effective.

It also can be used for all situations and works well at 1 on 1 combat using trickery and a mix of the 5 other forms to throw of an enemy. This is hard to master due to the amount of detail in the form and many Jedi who became practitioners of form 6 were more unreliable due to their failure to commit to the form. However there were more than one incredibly famous force users who found a way to maximize this form, two of these were the legendary Lord Reven and Xar Kun.

    Vaapad isn't exactly channeling the dark side like Juyo with less corrupting effects, it's also tapping into and channeling your opponents aggression into your own moves with the force, basically like using their momentum against them.
    It's "safer" because you yourself are not giving into the Darkside per se, but you are letting it guide your strikes. Most of the emotions aren't your own, but you're tapping into the power your opponent creates with their aggression, anger, hate, etcetera while also accepting and not suppressing your own aggression.
    When you think about it, it may be the dirtiest lightsaber form of all. A Vaapad user doesn't have to suffer, hold onto, and stoke all the pain, anger, hate, and misery that Darkside users do to gain power but they get a portion of that power added to their own without the sacrifice.
    The problem that arises is that you are feeling their emotions very intimately, entwining them along with that power into your own emotions and mental process, and letting it guide your blade in your strikes. You're letting the hate flow into you and through you then releasing it in an attack sequence. In a single duel, not much of a threat to the user, over time the corrupting influence can be devastating though. How many times can you truly feel and experience that level of hate and be able to let it go? How can you tell what emotional residue it is leaving and affecting you and can you always tell if it's all your opponents emotion or your own tightly controlled ones trying to slip through and out? How long can the pillar of your soul remain clean when you constantly submerge it in the dark souls of others? How long before your worldview starts to subtly change to be less merciful?
    Also the mental and emotional tightrope you have to walk to both accept and use your own negative emotions without feeding or focusing on them is a feat of Zen mastery of the Self few people can accomplish in a lifetime of contemplation. Now think about trying to walk that line in a life or death duel when the power that could save your life and the galaxies from the Jedi point of view is already flowing through you and you just have to give in a little bit more....
    Windu's self control and mental fortitude is absolutely stunning when you take in the full scope of what he's doing.
    That's why Mace beats Palpatine, ( I have never bought that garbage story about Palpatine letting Mace win to help turn Anakin, Sith sacrifice others for their goals not themselves)he's not as powerful as Palpatine but he's using Palpatines own power against him. Like quicksand the more your opponent struggles the faster they sink.
    Since Sith are generally about meeting and defeating opponents with more power and aggression than they can handle it's almost certain victory for the Jedi against an equally skilled Sith.
    I think that against Vaapad, Form Three Soretsu would be the best counter with it's lack of aggression and focus on staying clam and collected while letting your opponent tire themselves out. You're denying the Vaapad user most of the power of the style. From there they have a choice of fighting less effectively with Vaapad, shifting to a style that isn't their primary, or giving channeling their own negative emotions and using Juyo. Not a good spot for a Jedi to be in.
    I think for Sith(who rarely if ever use Soretsu) that Dooku's Form Two Makashi would be the best counter to Vaapad because of the tight discipline and emotional control of the style. A Makashi user would not be driven into the trap of trying to channel more of the darkside to overwhelm their opponent. They sit back, analyze, and deconstruct an opponent looking for weaknessess and then channel the darkside suddenly and with a laser focus for the attacks they know or at least believe will penetrate their opponents defenses because of the skill of the attack.. For much of the fight, the test attacks and parries, there would not be as much aggression for the Vaapad user to tap into.
    Not that it's even fair to use Vaapad in this discussion. It's Mace Windu's and Sora Bulq's personally created Form. There's only Mace, Sora, and maybe four or five other people who ever learned the form and Mace refused to teach it after losing some of those students to the Darkside and blaming himself and the form for their loss. Unless you happen to be fighting one of them the style is literally never going to be relevant let alone an option for the Jedi as a whole.
    They'd have an easier time breaking into the Great Library or scouring the galaxy for a holocron or Master to teach them Juyo while not getting caught by the Jedi council than learning Vaapad.

    Another great thing about form 1 is that when you take it to the max skill level, you become so fast and unpredictable that you get guys like Kit Fisto mopping the floor with General Grievous in seconds. It’s actually such a well balanced and underrated form. It’s got great defence, offence, and mobility because of its simplicity and it’s emphasis on using the force to guide your actions.This deeper immersion into the force amplifies augmentations and precognitive reflexes, making it an absolute hurricane on the battlefield. I’d kill to play as Kit Fisto in Battlefront 2 if they configured his style for AoE. Shii Cho has actually become one of my favourite forms in recent years because of Kit Fisto’s integration with it and form 4. Definitely much more than just disarming.

    I always just assumed that Sideous' opening forward leaping corkscrew across the room at them at such an elderly age was so shocking to the 3 masters who died that it caused them enough of a "OH FUCK THIS GUY IS R EAL AND HES CRAZY THE FUCK HE JUST CORKSCREWD ACROSS THE ROOM AT US" kind of thought process that they lost their technique momentarily in a state of shock and despair. Like they walked in the room all badass with Mace Windui and for things to go from "lets arrest this old dude lol ok" and the drop in confidence after that initial move was like going into a K - Hole when the bass drops at an EDM festival and your so deep in the ketamine hole that the bass drops and never comes back and you feel like you're psychologically fucked.
    I would have liked to have seen a longer battle that wasn't so embarassing to them, but the ease of killing them did serve to elevate Sideous to a legitimate threat.

    Now a serious question, _no really!_
    How much more effective was Form 3 with a Lightstaff, and were the skills the same in terms of training?
    Could Obi-Wan pick up a Lightstaff and use it straight away to be even more of a wiz at defence, or was it a different skill set?
    And really the same question for all the Forms… and were some more effective when used with a Lightstaff, and some less - how would Form 2 (for example) work? Would it be disastrous used with a Lightstaff or still be effective?
    Oh and how did a Lightstaff still work when cut in half, was it just two separate Lightsabers with a connecting mount?

      Not sure I could see it. Darth Nihl, Darth Chratis, and the wife of Valkorian from SWTOR whose name escapes me comes to mind as notable saberstaff users. None of these people would even make it to the top 10 duelists of their era nor is their preferred forms catologued unfortunately :( There are a lot of visuals however for Darth Nihl as he is represented in a comic book series and I would go as far as to take an educated guess at either Juyo or Ataru.
      Here is the problem with Soresu and a saberstaff. It's a very tight form based on momentum and speed(contrary to how we would view a defensive form in sword combat). It employs a lot of circular motions at its root that allow a force user to be able to slightly adjust their motions to counter incoming attacks. With a single blade, this means you're allowing the pommel to pass across your wrist a lot. with a double bladed saber you're using a lot of windmilling and slight course adjustments. In theory you can use the same principles for a saber staff as a double-bladed saber especially if the staff is made of saber-resistent materials. For a pure Soresu usage it would just be less effective the a double saber though. Your arguement for using one would have to be based on form switches mid-combat. That's the only way I could work through the usage of one in Form 3.
      But that's just my opinion :P Maybe I lack creativity

    • @mightymatt01
      @mightymatt01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lightstaff would not be good with forms 2 or 3. You couldn't really do for 2 as it was a functionally fencing it was about tight elegant moves with little movement. A staff requires quite a bit of movement to engage the two blades. Similar reason for form 3 although 3 is defensive and 2 is more offensive and about redirection of attacks against you instead of blocks. if you wanted a saberstaff form VI was the go-to form form IV could also work and if you were sith form VII with something was great a la Maul.

    • @ariesstorm9577
      @ariesstorm9577 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only confirmed user of Form III with a saberstaff (that I can think of) is Darth Zannah, the Sith apprentice of Darth Bane who featured heavily in the novels Rule of Two and Dynasty of Evil. In those books she uses Form III as a means of drawing out a fight while her mind works on Sith spells to be used against her enemies. While not the best duellist, it allowed her to keep up a reasonable defence against a rage fuelled Darth Bane in a couple of their duels.
      Given Obi-Wan’s skill in other Forms like Form IV, I’d say he’d be pretty good with the staff, fluidly switching between Form III defence and Form IV offence.
      As for the seven forms themselves and the saberstaff:
      Form I - yes, I would say that both would be suited for fighting groups of people
      Form II - no, difficult to use tight wrist movements and lunges characteristic of this form with a long hilt (unless it’s an Exar Kim style hilt, in which case you would still only use one blade).
      Form III - yes, keep spinning the weapon and you have an impenetrable shield. But that’s all.
      Form IV - yes, this form makes use of acrobatics and the entire body as a weapon; keep the body and both blades moving fluidly
      Form V - yes, deflect and counter
      Form VI - yes
      Form VII - yes
      Probably best to use paired lightsabers, they’re standard hilts that lock together at the pommels to make a saberstaff and just hope that if it gets cut in half, only the connector breaks leaving both hilts still fully functional.

    • @Wand422
      @Wand422 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ariesstorm9577 I think the original question was referring to an elongated hilt not a double-bladed saber. That was the reference I was working under anyway. Zannah used a double blade very effectively against multiple Jedi as a young apprentice not nearly in her prime yet but she wasn't the only one. Darth Maul practiced all 7 forms with a doublebladed and a single-bladed lightsaber. Fohargh also was considered adept in both Form 2 and 3 with a double-bladed lightsaber. Zez Kai-Ell, another double-bladed saber user taught Meetra Surik Form 4, 5(Shien), 6, and even 7. Exar Kun practiced Form 6, and Serro Xaj used form 5(Djem So)very well as well. I don't think a double-blade is considered un-usable in any form although I do agree that a Makashi variant seems un-optimized.

    • @mightymatt01
      @mightymatt01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ariesstorm9577 You are right I forgot about Zannah. I do believe that the staff is more of a liability if you are looking to be a form III master. In the Resistance era there are three lightsaber forms via the Force that crushed the First Order and the Final Order.
    Form 1 was used by Luke in a staff fight against Rey and Rey used a staff version to knockout Zorri Bliss and her Spice Runners with her staff, but only used her lightsaber as a last resort to force Zorri to cooperate and admit defeat. But Rey spared her instead of cutting of limbs.
    Form 2 was used by Luke Skywalker to distract the First Order during the Battle of Crait. Also by Rey during her’s and Kylo Ren’s duel with the Praetorian Guards on The Supermacy. Ben Solo also used it against the Knights of Ren during The Battle of Exegol.
    Form 3 was used by Rey during the Battle of Starkiller, her training on Ajan Kloss, the duel on the second Death Star’s ruins, and at the Battle of Exegol. Luke Skywalker also used it in a staff fight during his agreement with Rey. A redemped Ben Solo also used it against The Knights of Ren during The Battle of Exegol. Kylo Ren also used this form along Form 2 on Rey on their first physical meeting.
    Form 5 was used by Rey in The Battle of Starkiller Base in her mid-fight against Kylo Ren.
    Form 7 was used by Rey during The Battle of Starkiller.
    The Force techniques that were against both The First Order and The Final Order were Battle Meditation, Force Projection, Force Ghost, Long range communications, Force Pull, Force Deflections, Force Redirections, and calling on the past Jedi.

    The best Lightsaber form is Niman , form 6 , but with the very important mention that it needs to be practiced with a combat regimen of training in mind , like Exar Kun did. Since form 6 is a jack of all trades master of none style to begin with , you will have no blind spots and if practiced for heavy combat scenarios , like for wars and duels , it means you are mastering and integrating 5 previous forms + force powers into your repertoire , which means you are never left blind sided in any scenario and can change your tactic depending on the situation and use the best method possible to reply to the threat.

    Shien is focused on blaster redirection. Obviously not the impenetrable wall of form III, but you get a bit of offense.
    Djem so is the form of domination, focused on the transition form defense to offense and on powerfull strikes. So to beat a master of djem so there are 2 solutions: overwhelming offense (grievous, master of Juyo) or unbreakable defense (Soresu)

    Best way to deal with a lightsaber-wielding Force-sensitive opponent is to ambush them with gravity generators, and before they can recover, hit them with a long-range slugthrower or disruptor weapon. My particular weapon of choice is the Tenloss DXR-6 disruptor rifle. You don't go anywhere near your foe, you're ideally several blocks away, perched on a rooftop. The moment the target activates the gravity generators, you fire the fully charged rifle and reduce them to a pile of ash.
