    Some people have nothing better to do than criticize others who have a life. I think is just great that some one has taken the time to share with others!

    That was a heartwarming video. I learned to drive on a Cockshutt 60 Row Crop (an Oliver 60 Row Crop in red and yellow paint) on rubber tires. Our owner's manual showed an Oliver 60 Row Crop on Tip Toe steel wheels like your Dad's 70 here. Thanks for a wonderful video and memories. :)

    Now that's a helluva lawn aerator ! That would be somethin' to drive on a hard surface. Along those lines, I'm wondering if this can be equipped with rubber tires ?

    Thanks for sharing! Was this tractor purpose made for orchards or tobacco, or another crop?? I just like to know their origin of use. Nice!!!

      The purpose of this tractor was cultivating corn and other crops planted in rows. It could do other general farm jobs too, like plowing, planting and harvesting as well as power machines off a belt pulley.

    Oliver should have been in 3rd or 4th gear for faster starting time and pulling tractor in 2nd or 3rd for the speed

  • @Cougracer67

    Something is seriously wrong when you have to drag the tractor all over to get it started! Do it right, man, and it will fire up with just a couple turns of the hand crank or a couple rounds with the starter. Somebody didn't do their job!!

    • @super6954
      @super6954 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cougracer67 Sounds like you haven't done much with old tractors, if you think that. It is possible that a guy would have to tow a fully rebuilt motor for the first start even with a starter fitted, if compression's a bit low until rings bed in or if tolerances are a thou on the tight side as can happen sometimes.
      sometimes a tow will also save a lot of cranking with a tractor that's sat a few years or 30 like this one and compression's low because of it. if it's new to a guy and your not sure about settings and stuff to get it running a tow can save a lot of turns by hand also.
      I sort this old stuff for my work and hobby I have plenty of experience getting some of these old tractors running after being found in a barn, they get a service or rebuild depending on condition. some of them are just plain ignorant to crank by hand, or with a starter but fire up in a few feet or so with a tow the first time and there is nothing wrong with doing it sometimes. I bet this one probably started the next time with out a tow to.

      super6954 I grew up on a farm surrounded by old tractors and recently retired from 40+ years as a mechanic. I still say pulling a tractor to start it is a shortcut to proper workmanship or because of not replacing/repairing needed parts, or just getting in a hurry to hear it run. If a rebuilt engine is too tight to crank by hand or with the starter, it's just a sloppy/cheap rebuild. There's no excuse for not having the right clearances. And if "compression's a bit low until the rings bed in", again, something is wrong with the parts or workmanship. If some 30W oil on top of the pistons won't bring the compression up enough to start, something else is wrong. If a tractor was parked 30-40 years ago because it was so worn out it could hardly pull itself, yeah, then you may have to pull it all over the yard to get it to run. But why bother? Fix it! I recently inherited a B John Deere and a 9N Ford. The B hasn't run in over 35 years and 9N for at least 15. If I can't fire them up with the starter, I will consider myself a failure (although the B may be rusted tight; it sat outside for quite a few years). It may have to come apart. Either way, I can't see the need to resort to pulling it.

      @super6954 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cougracer67 We both have experience that is totally different for our years. I guess we are so far apart on ideas with what we have seen around or experienced, it's not worth discussing them further here. i hope you enjoy your retirement after 40+ years, you earned it turning wrenches. Good luck with your tractor projects. if you have time it would be nice to see video's up here of progress. I still got to work probably another 25 years. Sadly I don't have time with on farm/shop repairs , to film work during the day in my business, or on the farm either now my dads also retiring and not doing so much round here .

    • @Cougracer67
      @Cougracer67 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      super6954 OK, guess I was a little harsh! I guess it's just a thing I have; I view myself as a failure if an engine I overhauled or worked on or tried to revive didn't start with the crank or starter. Just me, I guess. I was taught in childhood by an uncle who was a fanatic for doing the job right; no shortcuts. My dad, like most farmers, was a patch-and-run kind of guy, "get it running and out in field now!". Uncle wasn't that concerned about the speed of repair. Now, a pulling to start story: In the mid-70's, one day I found Dad and his brother (a different uncle) trying to start a '68 F250. It had sat for about 3 years and the battery of course was completely dead. Everything they owned up to that point was generator equipped and they had pull started them lots of times with dead batteries. Not a pop out of this Ford, and they had literally pulled it for miles. I got a set of jumper cables and it fired up immediately! They didn't know that alternators need a shot of 12 v. before they will charge, unlike a generator. So, one point for my team!

      Cougracer67 No problem, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and where it needs to be it's done right for modern working stuff it is 100% . The old iron that guys spend more than it's worth restoring, sometimes a compromise has to be made. You will learn that with your old tractors when you start getting the bills in for parts and machine shop time, if you need it. even with sentimental value you got to be realistic sometimes and 90% will do.
      I have found a few we towed after rebuild only went the shop length or less than 10ft and was fine after or just needed fine tuning of timing after it had run you could tell it was just a hair off listening to it. . the older towed stuff went a little further after standing years. most ran fine after that and started as they should. If not it was rebuilt if costs allowed or it was scrapped if it wasn't rare, to help other guys out.
      Regards Robert
