Thanks everyone for watching! I have had a lot of requests for the written pattern so The Classic Fisherman Hat pattern is now available in my Etsy Shop. www.etsy.com/ca/shop/WoodcamperCrafts
My neighbor taught me how to make this short-row cap when I first learned crochet, some 40 years ago. Small difference on ours. On the return row of the short rows, I believe we: turn, skipped the first stitch, Slst into the next stitch, Sc-blo into the remaining stitches in the row, ch1, turn Either way, it is a classic style with just the right amount technique to keep you from getting bored with single crochet, lol. I'm very glad to see the technique being passed on. Thanks for the video! ((brought back so many good memories for me ))
Wow that is interesting to hear. This was the first pattern I created using short rows so funny to hear that the technique has been around for a while. There are only so many stitches and combinations so not surprising that patterns I come up with have variations that have been around for a while. My mom always said what is old will be new again. Thanks for watching!
Ive never heard of this method , struggle horribly with the bulky sinch it method and am very curious to see thanks in advance , ill let you know how it turns out .
This is only my second project after picking crochet back up after about ten years and your tutorial has been so helpful!! I also appreciate the cuts where you let us do the single stitch rows on our own so I can switch to listening to music for a second and then come back for more instruction once I’m done!
That is such a nice comment, thank you. Obviously you still remember even after 10 years as I don’t really classify this as a beginner project! Yes, no one wants to watch me crochet the entire row! I like listening to music as well when I crochet. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. I enjoyed the tutorial. I ended up with a slightly wonky hat since I somehow ended up with 54 stitches at the end. I probably just lost count along the way. Thanks again.
Vielen Dank! Ich freue mich, dass dir das Häkelvideo gefallen hat. Danke fürs zuschauen. In case google translate did not work, what I meant to say is: Thank you very much! I am glad you enjoyed the crochet video. Thanks for watching.
You begin after you finish row 17. Once you finish row 17 you have 50 stitches in your row which is the same number you started with. Row 17 ends at the bottom of the toque. Once you finish row 17 you repeat row 2-17. When you start the second section (starting with row 2) there are no short rows yet and you are starting at the bottom of the toque. Hope this helps.
Thank you for your kind comment. I am glad you found the video so easy to follow. I do have written patterns in my Etsy shop but they are not the same as my free tutorials. Thanks for watching😍
I also wish there was a written pattern. I find it difficult to follow videos without also having a written pattern to follow. I would definitely pay for a written pattern!
I worked along with you on the patter and THOUGHT I was doing well; until I got to the end and had three pieces to put together for the hat. I must have misunderstood you. I thought you said "do the same pattern two more times". ( duh!!!) I interpreted it as 3 separate pieces and now I realize you must have meant "CONTINUE ON With the same work....just starting with Row 1 again". Dang. I have to rip everything out and begin again, which I hope I'll do. You may want to clarify that in your directions....otherwise I thought you were very clear and I really liked working along with you. Thanks. Clare
Thanks for the feedback it is much appreciated. It did not occur to me when I made the video but now that you mention it I definitely can see how that is confusing. Thanks for letting me know.
Note to all crochet tutors...we appreciate your time and talent so please use light colored yarn for the tutorials. When you use dark yarn its extremely difficult to see what youre doing a n d when i cant see what youre doing i move on to another tutorial.
Thank you for your comment. I have heard that from a number of viewers and will definitely be using light colours for n future videos. I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching.
I wanted to check in and make sure I’m crocheting this hat correctly. In your video it doesn’t seem like there is a hole in the top of the hat at the end. My hats have been having holes at the top which I then have to weave closed. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for this lovely video🙏
This pattern is worked flat so there is no hole at the top. Once you are done the last row is joined to the original chain with a slip stitch. There is no hole so you do not have to weave anything closed. You only get the hole when you crochet a hat from the bottom up. When you crochet a hat flat or top down there isn't a hole. Sounds like you are doing it right! Thanks for watching.
I know this is an older video, but if I get to the part where you go down the stitch markers (row 16), and I have 13 stitches instead of 15, is there a way to fix that without starting over?
The height is 10.5 inches and width 7.5 inches but it is very stretchy. You can definitely make this any size just follow the same pattern but start with a shorter or longer chain. You can also make it as wide as you want.
This hat is made with short rows. If you are having difficulty I recommend watching the video from start to finish before starting. I go over the short row technique in detail in the video. If you have any specific questions after I am happy to help.
Once you finish row 17 you have completed the first section. After row 17 start again at row 2. Once you get to 17 again you will have completed the second section. Keep repeating rows 2-17. I hope this helps. You might also want to check out my Summit toque tutorial. It is very similar and also uses short rows but it is an easier pattern.
Sorry I did not demonstrate how to measure the toque. If you have the person with you I suggest (before you seem it together) holding it around their head to determine the correct size. This is the easiest method as it accounts for the stretch in the hat. If they are not with you get them to measure the circumference of their head and then measure the hat. You will want to make take off about 1 inch from the measurement to account for stretch. Hope this helps.
Hi, how much yarn did you use in total? I probably didnt get that. I will be making this hat for my boyfriend, this will be the first time crocheting for me so I hope it turns out good, but as far as I have watched the video, it seems as your explanations are really easy to understand even if you have no experience 😊
Thanks! I used 1 ball of yarn. Just some tips if you are new to crocheting, always use stitch markers and count the stitches in your rows. If the number of stitches per row don’t match the pattern take out the rows until you find where you were off and start over. Let me know how it goes. If you have questions just leave me a comment I try to respond to all comments. Happy crocheting!
@@woodcampercrochetcrafts Thank you very much, especially for your fast and kind response!! I will let you know on how it goes😊 Thank you for this video😊❤️ Greetings from Germany!!
@@woodcampercrochetcrafts Yes, I agree!! I just wanted to start but realized that my hook is 4.00mm instead of 5.00mm…Do you think that it does much of a difference?
@@zeynep2088 It will definitely make a difference. You can use a smaller hook but you will need to start with a longer chain so you have more stitches per row and will have to crochet more rows in total.
Hi, did you have to use more than one ball of yarn? I saw that you said one ball in one comment and 1.5 balls in another, so just wanted to double check! Thank you ❤
I have made short row hats before with other stitches but not the hdc or dc. You can do short row hats with any stitch but it will change the pattern. The hdc or dc will make the hat wider so you will probably need fewer "panels". This pattern works well with the sc (blo) because that stitch makes the hat really stretchy, it is the same technique I use for hat bands. Thanks for the question and watching the video!
Soooo, I’m confused. Using 3 weight yarn, and 5 mm hook, after I chain 51, the chain doesn’t fully wrap around my head. So can I increase my chains to make it fit and then just follow the pattern as normal? Does it get bigger as you go?
The pattern is worked flat not in the round so no need to measure the chain around your head. The chain is the height of the hat with enough extra for a “cuff”.
I meant to say a big THANK YOU! For your reply and the pattern! Your video and pattern was so easy to follow, I am in the middle of making a beanie and it’s coming along beautifully! You made it so very easy to understand. Cheers ❤

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with sizing. The gauge for this pattern is 19 stitches by 22 rows equals 4 inches. I would recommend starting out with the yarn and hook I use in the pattern and then try modifying from there. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your question. You can easily make this hat with any yarn and in any size. The gauge for 4 inches by 4 inches is 19 stitches by 20 rows. My completed hat is 10.5 inches high.
Based on similar comments I am using lighter yarn for my videos going forward. It is all a learning process. If you use the same yarn you will need approximately 1.5 balls of yarn. Thanks for watching.

La forma más fácil de ajustar el patrón es usando un hilo más ligero o más pesado o usando un ganchillo más pequeño o más grande.

Can you please clarify if the slip-stitch seam is sewn with the right sides facing out or in?
The hat is the same on both sides so it doesn’t matter what side you seem the hat together. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
How did you customise it? How did you measure the head size for whom u are making it? U didn't demonstrate it.
Sorry I did not demonstrate how to measure the toque. If you have the person with you I suggest (before you seem it together) holding it around their head to determine the correct size. The yarn in the video is a (3). I did a little googling and it looks like it is equivalent to 8ply.

The stitch markers were purchased from Amazon. They were very inexpensive and came in two sizes. I will try to find the link for you.

The pattern uses Katie Merino Wool Aran yarn (8 wpi) which is a medium weight 4 yarn.

5” with a 5.00 hook
My yarn weight is a 4

@@woodcampercrochetcrafts thank you! My husband keeps saying the same thing. I ‘guess’ I’ll have to buy more yarn 😂
There is no better feeling than yarn shopping!🧶
Do mean make alot of peases and join together??
You are only making one piece that has rows that are repeated. Each time you repeat the rows I call it a section. You only have one seam.
How do I adjust the pattern for different sizes or yarn? I understand guage. Can I pick any number of starting SC to reach the hat length I want?
Thanks for your question. You can easily make this hat with any yarn and in any size. The gauge for 4 inches by 4 inches is 19 stitches by 20 rows. My completed hat is 10.5 inches high.
