Hidden Gems of Eikesdal and Sunndal, Norway.

- Here are some hidden gems from northwestern parts of Norway, found by straying just slightly off the beaten track. We go on a road-trip to Eikesdalen in Molde Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, where the beautiful waterfall Mardalsfossen is located. This is sometimes referred to as one of the tallest waterfalls in Europe, see

From there we drive up the steep and narrow toll road leading to Aursjøen in Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park,

and continue our trip along Torbudalen and down to Sunndal, stopping only to take in the views of the surrounding mountains and streams.
A short hiking trip up the mountain Vikfjellet provides an excellent view over Sunndalen and the small industry town of Sunndalsøra, with small clear streams and lush green nature in breathtaking surroundings (just ignore the electric masts). Driving a bit further west along the fjord on the old road which was leading to Øksendal before the almost 6 km long tunnel through Vikfjellet was built (opened in 2000), we find yet another gem: a km or so on foot from where the old road stops at the top of the hill (now closed for traffic) at Svinberget, there are some awesome rock climbing walls, which are not used as much as before the old road was closed. There are no climbers to see on this summer day, and I'm able to enjoy the (tempting) walls and the scenery around without any interruptions.
The last hidden gem is also located outside a tunnel through the mountain (7430 m long, opened in 2014), but on the opposite side of the fjord, namely Oppdølsstranda between Sunndalsøra and Ålvundeid. The old road is still partly opened for cars, but not the second of the three old tunnels dating from 1974, where we sometimes go fishing, like on this trip. At our favourite spot it's still hard not to get a fish, often even on the first attempt. On the way back we pick wild strawberries and enjoy the amazing scenery which this part of Sunndalsfjorden has to offer.
