How I've kept my Night owl ( Nite Owl ) DVR dvr-ahd10 working for three years

  • If this video has been helpful, please leave a comment, click the like button, and help me out by subscribing to my channel. Now that it's Halloween, has your Night Owl DVR stopped working? Or is it working but the hard drive stopped recording? Mine has at least 2 times in the past three years, but here's how I keep it working. See the detailed instructions on my blog: bobhowto.wordpress.com/2019/1...
    I would recommend a replacement power adapter, but its been hit or miss for me, some of the switching power adapters will put noise lines into the recorded video. If you got one from amazon that doesn't make any digi hash (digital noise) leave a comment with the amazon link

    WOW!!!! You could have easily resolved your problem and not shared with all of us, but you didn't. You shared and it is a priceless share. Well, actually. . . . .it was a $300.00-$600.00 share. That is precisely the amount of cash you saved me by making this video. I felt safer knowing I had camera's running to add security to my home. My DVR stopped working weeks ago, but I just discovered this a week ago. Immediately, I was bummed out and I began researching the price for a new dvr/camera set. It's Christmas season and a new NightOwl set would have put a strain on my gift shopping. I ordered the power box but I was so bummed when it arrived that I let it set in the box for a week before actually trying it. Today I put on my man panties and decided to give it a try. Initially the red light did not start flashing for the first 10 secondes. I dropped my head and was disappointed. I looked away to focus on something else, turned back to look at my dvr and holy bat smoke bat man, it was working! I share all of this to say, THANK YOU BROTHER!!!!

    You my friend just saved me from purchasing a new security system. My AHD-10B-81-RS stopped working due to disk error. I purchased 2TB 7200 rpms WD purple edition hard drive as suggested by Night Owl Tech Support. The system would not power up - kept getting the night owl logo blinking off and on. Contacted Night Owl Tech Support once again asking what may be causing this issue. Performed all the troubleshooting steps he suggested, and it still didn't work. Claimed it was a software issue and stated the system was DEAD. He recommended to purchase a new system since my system was obsolete. I just couldn't wrap my mind around how the system worked perfectly fine before swapping out the hard drive and now it no longer works?! Searched "night owl ahd10b-81-rs no power" and your video popped up. Grabbed a power cord from one of the gaming systems from my kids room and it worked!!!! Night owl never mentioned this could be the source of my issue. I can't thank you enough for your video!

    I'm glad I found your video before tearing my Night Owl unit apart. My video feeds stopped working and I too lost the red blinking HD light. I replaced the power cord to my recorder and all the cameras came back online along with the red HD light flashing. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

    Thank you...I was getting ready to get on the phone with Night Owl which I wasn't looking forward to. My brick wasn't bad but it wasn't plugged in all the way where the unit was receiving full power. After correcting those issues everything is working great again.

    Thank you I really appreciate you, you saved me time, money and a headache. I had to replace my HD and was also having issues with other cameras. I had no signal on 1 camera (farthest/longest cable camera) and had trouble with the night vision blinking on 2 other cameras. I watched this video and noticed that 3 of the 4 cameras that I had issues with were powered by 1 power brick on my 8 channel system. After ordering a replacement power brick from Amazon all cameras are working again, thank very much.

    My ethernet port wouldn't light up. I did your typical troubleshooting and tried replacing ethernet cord and trying different ports on the router. After watching your video I tried a different power supply and that fixed my issue. The old power supply would power the unit up but it wasn't putting enough power out to make the unit work properly. Thanks for the video you saved me money!

    People will replace the hard drive thinking it went bad but yeah, try the power supply first, saves you a ton of trouble and money if that's all it is. The power unit does have enough power to power the board and throw out a signal to the monitor but will NOT power a hard drive if it's going bad or failing to output all the juice it's rated at.

    You can take top cover off and drill more holes in it to keep cooler. My dvr is hiding in a compartment I built into a piece of furniture up and under a shelf with very limited space. I also taped off the lights so if a burglar opened the cabinet doors they cant see the unit.
    I drilled more vent holes to keep cooler. !

      Now think of keeping oxygen going to your bottom tree trunk and underground root system in a 5-ft circle surrounding trunk.
      Just like when you make sure to keep anything covering your cable box on top of TV to prevent overheating.
      You see trunks secondary tissue and root systems require oxygen exchange with above ground atmosphere to function.
      Yet with today's mulching fad (also added soil mounding or artificially raising grade) everybody buries that whole area. Immediately forcing suffocated tree to grow above ground roots which like disoriented drowning swimmers. Rather than growing radially outbound away from trunk instead Circle and grow straight back toward trunk.
      These above ground Roots (SGR's) inevitably strangle trunk as it gets wider. Worse such trees with distorted root systems have a much much higher chance of toppling over.
      Check out TH-cam This Old House "how to mulch around a tree properly" video to learn more about what I just shared with you as a professional arborist.
      If you have no trees just pass this information along to someone that you would consider a mulch Junkie.

    Good luck getting a hold of night owl technical support their "live support" is a misnomer. It is rumored that they do have technical support its just that no one has actually talked to one. You just spend days after days of waiting in Queue. Then get booted back to the end of the line when you get to first in line.

      I live in a desert. My first unit overheated once and I mitigated that with a high speed barn fan pointed at it. It died officially just days ago...and yesterday my bike was stolen right out my yard. I had a second nightowl DP8 sent via ebay, and swear I successfully set it up...but trying to put it to use today proved pointless. I'm locked out and u already know support doesn't help at all. Their app has decided I never bought the first unit and therefor I can't log into the app to reset password or pair my new device with the app...never ran it on internet, just checked feed when things were amiss. Wired, 4k cameras. Attempting to find a yone that knows of a non nightowl deck that runs the nightowl cameras.

    • @XellosMetallium
      @XellosMetallium 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was the power brick + HDD. I test it with an amplifier power brick same stats (12v 2a). But the original HDD was causing a problem.
      This time I use a 2.5" HDD for lower power consumption. Also added a fan in there to cool the heatsink. The DVR original HDD works fine on my PC.

    • @elautor3656
      @elautor3656 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try disconnecting all cameras to prevent the system from trying to record and try to power it up with the DVR power supply or the cameras power supply, if that works access the menu and format the hard drive sometimes the Hard drive gets stuck and makes the system reboot like that. Maybe you need a hard drive replacement.

    • @XellosMetallium
      @XellosMetallium 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elautor3656The problem was the 3.5" HDD. I couldn't do anything because there was no picture at all so my guess is the Power Supply is also failing. I try to format it with Windows but then I hears CLICKS coming from the HDD. Since I couldn't repair this i have to let it go.
      I switch it out for a 2.5" HDD (for less power usage) that solve the issue because then I was able to get pass the OWL logo.
      I also replace the old Power Supply because I don't want to risk having the the HDD dying too due to insufficient power.

    I must ask what causes video loss?

    • @bobhowtoandtravel9551
      @bobhowtoandtravel9551  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most commonly: camera power pack could be bad, hard drive could be bad, dvr power pack could be bad, or there was an electricity blackout

      Try a different power pack, they are usually the first to fail

    My husband changed night owl password right before he filed divorce and moved out. So I can't recover password. Is there a way to do this internally through dvr?

    • @bobhowtoandtravel9551
      @bobhowtoandtravel9551  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nope, there is no way to recover, or reset it, you will have to replace the dvr.

    I bought a night owl for 200 dollars and I don't have the email to reset the password. There's no way except that way according to tech support. Have I lost 200 dollars and now have to throw it away?

      if your using it in local IP address mode, it means that you have the wrong IP address. eveytime I power cycle my router the night owl will wind up with a different IP that I have to find by looking in the routers list of addresses

      Night Owl have a few temporary password generators that can give you access to the system and let you change the password.

    Mine suddenly won't connect to the internet. I can see my videos on the TV, but I can't get then to show on the app on my phone. The error says unable to connect to wifi gateway. I have a new ethernet cable coming tomorrow... praying that will fix it!? If not, I am about to throw the piece of @%#$ in the trash!
