Apple iPad Pro with M2 review (2022): An impressive, expensive stopgap

- Apple’s latest iPad Pro is nearly the same as last year’s model, but that’s not a bad thing. The M2 chip is incredibly powerful, the display and design remain top-notch, and there are a few other new features here that should appeal to video editors and Apple Pencil aficionados. The iPad Pro is still quite expensive, and there’s a good chance Apple will give it a full-on redesign in the next year or two, but for now it’s the best tablet money can buy.
Pros:
- M2 chip is incredibly powerful
- Great battery life
- Screen and industrial design are still best-in-class
- Handy Apple Pencil Hover feature
Cons:
- Awkwardly-placed front camera
- Stage Manager isn’t fully baked just yet

Not sure why people keeps saying 11inch is "portable" and 12.9 is not... come on. Drink some milk the 12.9 wont break your backs

Would assume that the other models can’t have the front camera in landscape mode because that’s where the sensors are to charge the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil. And would also explain why they stuck with the 1st Gen pencil for the 10th Gen iPad even though they switched to a USB-C charging port.

They can’t put them both there.
Why not have the pencil charger at the top then? Would be actually nicer because most people store their ipad in their backpack top down and not sideways. So the pencil wouldn’t rub up against anything. Then the camera could be on the side like everyone wants
That’s a really solid point I never considered from the design and engineering perspective!
Stage Manager is a useful addition but it’s still pretty flawed. iOS remains the bottleneck - crazy seeing hardware with so much potential left on the table. I’ll wait for the next Pro, and settle for my 2020 iPad Pro until then.
Nothing is flawed, they just don't want the iPads to cannibalise the Macbook lineup, it's all artificial.
@@SaarN1337 not even that. It’s just that laptops and tablets are two different products, desktop OS for a touch first device is crazy stupid, and the sales figures show this. Windows devices as laptops outsell Macs by a huge margin, yet the iPad with a mobile OS is outselling all windows tablets combined, not just the surface, which in itself pushes less units than the iPad pro alone, and without a keyboard is rendered practically useless. The iPad is plenty functional without a keyboard.
The power of the M1 and M2 is also over rated. It’s the entry level computer chip apple makes, most people with editing and high level creativity in mind aren’t buying the MacBook Air. Even than the form factor is more suited for desktop like computing.
The only pros that can push the iPas are artsy types, and that’s OK, we need devices too. People whining about the iPad not doing enough, just want a laptop. Buy it it exists. The MacBook Air is cheaper and more compact than an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard that has a small trackpad and is missing a function row.

Same with the chargers, they used lightning on iphone until now despite it being so much inferior to usb-c and they would have continued to use it, until they got forced by the European union to use a unified charger solution

I have the new iPad Pro 12.9” (2022 version) to replace my 2017 iPad Pro 11” which has an increasingly unreliable lightning connector. It’s a business purchase and does what I need it to do.
It really drives me nuts that they can't fit that giant camera wart inside the massive frame of the iPad since the whole thing sits unevenly on a table and rocks around.
After years of looking at devices that I can’t afford, I got the new iPad Pro 11’

11" needs mini led. It's the portable version in real sense for most people and could do with higher brightness which mini led generate.
12.9 will be sitting on desk for the most part.

Good review. I think the awesome hardware is truly limited by the software. I mean, I still find using an actual Mac to be much faster and more efficient for my workflow. Put macOS on the iPad Pro already!!
I think it depends on what you’re using it for, it’s a companion device that wasn’t marketed as one
I ain't buying the pro until they put the Mini LED in the 11 inch model. Ridiculous to pay that much amount of money but they're only giving us an LED display which is unfair because it's also a PRO model.
The 11 inch most likely won’t get MiniLED but will go straight to OLED.
I don’t know why people think we “need” a new design for the iPad Pro. It looks beautiful, and I don’t know what they could even change about it.
Iam 58 years old and have a Gen 4 ipad air...I want to upgrade to as big as possible / for movies / utube / social media / taking pictures / 256 GB prefered or more.....I am not very techy so i need some suggestions on which Apple ipad to get as i am kinda in the Apple Ecosystem...thx in advance.....cheers from Canada
The display is just gorgeous
Talk to me again when the apps are forced to support full screen, landscape, portrait, and split screen. Until then, it’s still a horrible experience
when trying to use it for work.
It’s sleek and fast, but has way too many drawbacks to be a productivity device.
I’ve been a huge fan of stage manager, as it keeps app conversations like slack, or iMessage open on the side and allows me to respond quickly when I see the preview update with a new message. Really allows me to leave my phone in the pocket for those tasks. Simple, yet effective.
couldn’t you already do that with the normal split screen and slide-over?
It was never intuitive for me, as I already have to remember too many gestures. It’s almost like SM forces you to have a split screen. User error on my part for sure.
Is the battery life good?
Stage Manager with Display Zoom set to “More Space” is horrible with many apps. The reality is the M2 iPad Pro 12.9” with iPadIOS 16.1 & Procreate 5.2.9 is a nightmare of crashes and not stable at all. You click an active brush & Procreate crashes. Click to edit a brush, Procreate crashes. Click the color change & 9 out of 10, Procreate locks up and finally crashes. My experience with iPadOS & Procreate is pretty horrible at this point. Things will get even worse when an external monitor is supported. No wonder Apple didn’t release 16.0 and they are struggling to release 16.2. Apple really messed up this time around. Procreate is a number one app for Apple. I spoke with the developers of Procreate and they have been working on this problem for over a year!
This will get fixed, but you can tell none of these reviewers know how to use an iPad.
I bought an M1 1tb iPad to get maximum ram for procreate. It took 6 months for that to be implemented. When I bought it on launch, procreate couldn’t recognise my iPad properly and only recognised 2gb of RAM, couldn’t open over half my projects. Then A month later it went 5gb and then 6 months later to 12gb.
Never buying an iPad on launch. It’s the case with a lot of other apps, where it takes months for the new power to get access to it.

How can I update ios 16.1 on ipad air 5 with Mobile data?
Ok.. here is a list of apps I plan to use.. Fender Play, its a guitar lessons app with human instructors created by Fender.. Gibson Guitar lessons app, Fender Tone, a app that allows you to change, edit and create effects and preset on my Fender GTX guitar amp.. Marshall Gateway, does the same thing as the Fender tone but for Marshall Code 25 and 50 watt amps.. The Spark app, an app for the Positive Grid Spark modeling amp.. Katana Librarian and the Katana Air app, apps for the Boss Katana MKII guitar amps.. Mantis from the Laser Academy, an app used to dry fire indoor target practicing, this app utilizes the camera to stare and targets and keep score, and finally, Final Cut Pro... I have it on my mac mini but apparently I have to get another copy for the tablet.. so based on all of this, which would you go with, the 12.9 or the 11?
My iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 5th Gen) is stuck on the Apple logo boot loop. The iPad is two years old and is in excellent condition. Apple said it is a hardware failure. I can't believe this is happening in Apple's product.

It depends on how much you’re willing to spend. The new one will have OLED and will look noticeably better, but it’ll be around $1,500, and your current iPad is great

Did you notice high blooming effect when using your iPad at night? I tested both 11” and 12.9”, I prefer the 12.9”. I don’t own a laptop but I have a Mac mini so that is why I prefer the larger screen too.
I’ve been wanting to know this since launch too. No one wants to answer. The 12.9 pro from last year had noticeably more blooming than my macbook pro with mini LED, so i returned it. I’ve been hoping that this years 12.9 pro is on par with the MBP.
@@dirkit247 true story, I also had the 14” MacBook Pro and the blooming was barely visible. But I returned it because I prefer to save money with the Mac mini.

they wont update it next year, historicly ipad pros are updated every 1.5 years, so you wont see a update until spring 2024.
Except when the updates are too small. That’s why there was an small update in early 2020 and again early 2021. Analysts are expecting end of 2023.
Microsoft surface laptop would be a better buy for most people. Too bad everyone is stuck using apple products. Sigh.

That is the reason I bought the iPad Pro M1, I know that the keyboard and Pencil will be replaced with the new design and that would mean a £500 extra cost to update them on a new design. So I bought the M1 knowing that will last me >5 years and save me the £500 extra costs. A great device with the obvious caveat that the Apple Pro range is expensive and not for the feint hearted.
Of course no other manufacturers haven't caught up with the iPad Pro because no one else can sell a thousand dollar tablets. How many people bought the Tab S8 Ultra?

Nothing about how it's the same 5 "studio quality" mics and 600nits LED since 2017 on the 11", huh? Or the frame build quality? Any Intel on whether bend issues in the frame persist from years prior? Food for thought, the people will remember you when you steer them clear of an expensive product that performs well below its paycheck. Apple will never remember you for shilling another extraneous iPad 'upgrade'. which entity do you think you'll be able to monetize for longer?
I’m here from the future. Don’t buy the M4 iPad Pro. All of your accessories cease to function and the price for the 13 inch is 1299. Plus 129 for the Apple Pencil pro and 349 for the new Magic Keyboard. Pass. The M2 iPad Pro is now basically 1/2 price. Buy THIS instead!!!
Apple should improve the cameras to match iPhones (48 megapixels). Apple should improve their LiDAR too for Nvidia NeRF and Luma AI purposes.

Stage manager is ok. All it really does is let me experience having 3-4 phones. Really only useful when u need to managed multiple things and non stage manager multitask isn’t working cuz u dont wanna swipe to other stuff

Ya so on 16.2 and even the M1 gets toasty, perhaps mention the M2 is worse. For light-Devs this thing may be ok as more and more people are using prebuilt libraries,API madness, and restrictive SDK’s, and over the top high-level languages(“esoteric is becoming the new norm). As for getting into the system 😂😂🎃 ya there lockdown model is just getting worse, well see what is released in January 2023 because this slow mode is ridiculous considering what’s actually happening and coming soon. Trick? or Treat? or Both 🎃❤🎃
I bought this portable fan, runs on battery, and I use it on all my devices when doing intensive stuff. It is portable and effective, in that it keeps even 12th-gen Windows machines cool. It costs about £20 and if people use common sense when doing intensive stuff especially when all we have is passive cooling, then worries like this are moot. Common sense is a great construct.

I’m asking adobe to get its head out of its ass and make a professional version of photoshop and illustrator for the platform. The software is dog$hit in my honest opinion. If I need to stretch an image. Or edit anything I get onto my desktop version of Lightroom or photoshop

Despite the obvious, Apple has to cut the price of this this idiotic product in half immediately, just on the fact that Eve has let the cat out of bag with no innovation in the company anywhere. It’s proven, there’s argument to counter the fact. Apple has become the Dodo bird and is ruined by its idiotic marketing team, it’s Blackberry all over again.
The guy is using this as a laptop.
At hardware level you might get more storage or screen density. But it's all marginal things from here for casual users who mostly use it for consumption of media.

I'm always amazed how little knowledge apple owners have of technology whwn I see these videos. These aren't really devices that people like an engineer would buy, most call themselves ' creatives '.... whatever that means. They seem more like a fashion statement for narcasistic people.
