  • It's that time of year again... it's time for a colonoscopy! Join along as I take you through the process of getting my 5th colonoscopy as an IBD patient!
    Together we'll take a journey as long as a colon (?), from pre-prep to post-procedure, with some SpongeBob references along the way. Because, why not?
    As an IBD patient with ulcerative colitis, I've gotten pretty used to having things put you know where (shoutout to all the enemas, suppositories, and rectal foams I've tried over the years, not to mention the rigid sigmoidoscopies - eyyo!), but I know that some of you out there - whoever you are - might be a bit nervous about the colonoscopy process!
    So, I'm here to tell you that I can ALMOST guarantee, with 100% certainty, that it won't be as bad as you're imagining!
    If you have any questions about the colonoscopy process, either prep, procedure, or post-procedure, feel free to DM me on Instagram @alicepingviola or leave me a comment below!

    I recently had my first colonoscopy (and upper endoscopy) at 28, and I was literally watching all of your colonoscopy prep videos while enduring my own prep experience. My doctor prescribed a "split prep" of drinking half the Miralax solution the evening before the procedure and the other half 5 hours before the procedure, with some Dulcolax laxatives and Gas-X in between at specific times. It WORKED. I found some flushable wipes that are alcohol-free and have both aloe and witch hazel (very soothing!). I admittedly slept on my bathroom floor that night (well... attempted to sleep). The doctor ended up finding a large pre-cancerous polyp which he removed in several pieces, and I get to be re-scoped in a year (oh joy!). Ultimately very glad I went through with the procedure and caught this early.
    Thank you for being so open about such an important topic. It really is so important to de-stigmatize and de-mystify the whole experience so that it's not some big scary horrible thing.

      Oof, welcome to the colonoscopy club! I'm so glad my videos helped you during the process and made it all a little less scary. I'm so glad to hear you caught the polyp early, and I hope continued screening going forward will keep everything under control! And great tip about the wipes - witch hazel is my savior!

    Having mine today and was super nervous about the prep but after watching tons of helpful videos (like yours! 🙏) and comments, I decided on the miralax prep. So glad I did because it was not bad at all! A few tips that worked for me: eat lightly a few days prior (small portions, mainly saltine crackers,broth, mashed potatoes, hydrate with water, etc) . Had mostly broth,apple juice and water today to avoid hunger pains. Mine is scheduled for early morning so i started the prep at 5pm. (Didn’t need the dulcolax because my stools were already loose). Tasted just like gatorade so no problem but took it slowly to avoid nausea. drank a few ounces every 15 min, then increased it to 4 ounces every 10 minutes..it took me 3 and a 1/2 hours to finish drinking through a straw. Had baby wipes and applied A&D OINTMENT and drank water after each trip to the bathroom. I was so afraid of nausea, migraines, vomiting and dehydration but no side affects whatsoever..and I have a very sensitive stomach! Onto the actual procedure in a few hours 😅🙏👍

For my prep; I did on bottle of magnesium citrate Sunday night around 7pm. Then Monday I did 7 capfuls of MiraLAX mixed with 32oz of light blue Gatorade around 4pm. Then another 7capfuks and 32oz of MiraLAX around 8. My colonoscopy was September 7, 2021 at 7am I was home by 10am that day. I ate a quick snack and took a 3 hour nap.

    Mine is in a few days and I was prescribed the Miralax/Gatorade prep. I hate Gatorade and all sports type drinks and want to just use plain water. You are the first person I’ve ever seen mix it with water! Did you just use tap water? Did you drink any sports drinks in between to replace electrolytes?

      I’m not a huge sports drink person but I’d recommend lemon-lime Liquid IV or something similar!! My biggest piece of advice when using water is to chill it fully! Like make the prep the night before you need to drink it so it’s super cold - makes it so much less gross, and use a straw!

    After doing research, I've heard horror stories with the awful tasting prep the doctors prescribe so I decided not to use the prescription and do the prep the old fashion way with Miralax and Dulcalax pills and it worked like a charm. I do remember following a specific diet a few days before as well. Anyone who is on the fence, do the Miralax and Ducalax pills. It works and you won't be subjected to drinking those nasty preps the doctor's prescribe. BTW... glad everything worked out for your with your colonoscopy results. My son is being checked for ulcerated colitis. His symptoms sound exactly like you described. 😞

    • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  ปีที่แล้ว

      Always check with your doc about prep! I agree though, miralax is WAY better, but some doctors have specific protocols they prefer their patients follow so make sure to confirm it's ok to do something different. It's not worth going through the whole process of prep only to find out they can't do the procedure because you did the prep incorrectly, or because they can't see the colon clearly! I'm so sorry about your son, I hope he is doing okay.

    I am up late tonight doing my colonoscopy prep. I drank the Miralax about four hours ago, and while it hasn't kicked in yet, your comments about "hearing and feeling things going on" strikes a chord. I had mine 2 weeks ago. We had to reschedule. I used the SUPREP method, and was not able to hold that much liquid in my stomach. I began to vomit until it emptied me back out. Then my blood sugar crashed, and I was in a bad way until I got some apple juice. Then, I tried to finish the rest- but once again I could not keep it down. I did manage to keep some of it in my system, because I started to get all the sloid waste out, but it was not clear like they want it... So I have to try again. I am not looking forward to it. Any other thoughts or advise about nausea, that you didn't mention in video? Also, Great job! You are very knowledgeable and it was informative. • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no!! I'm so sorry you had such a touch time, Mark. Did you speak with your doctor about trying any other prep methods? It's important to try and figure out what might be causing the vomiting - it could be that the taste triggers that reaction, the sheer volume of liquid you're ingesting is too much for your body, or that you are having some kind of reaction to that specific prep. They do make variations on prep that involve consuming less liquid, so I would definitely inquire about that with your doctor. I also found this time around that "chasing" each sip of prep with something with a strong, DIFFERENT flavor (like apple juice) helped with the nausea.

      I’ve never had any issues with vomiting, just some mild nausea, but that was only due to the volume of liquid you consume. In my experience the dulcolax has no effect on that. I would make sure to do exactly what your doctor prescribed because if you only do half the prep, you risk showing up to the procedure only to be turned away because you didn’t follow the prep/aren’t properly cleaned out. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy but I want to cancel it. I don't fee; like doing the prep and having to waste 2 days in order to have this. I am cancelling.

      If your doctor is recommending you have one, it is important to follow through! It’s not super fun, but I don’t consider time spent on your health and wellbeing (or getting to the bottom of whatever may have prompted the procedure) to be a waste of time! The process isn’t bad at all and frankly it’s really only about 24 hours of your life at most - not even a full 2 days!

    How did the Meralax finally work?
    Was it harsh. Did it cause nausea?

    • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes I have get a little nauseous but that's only because of the volume of liquid I'm consuming, not the miralax itself. Ultimately I think it's a pretty "gentle" process for what it is!

    I'm so so nervous because it's my 1st colonoscopy! My dr suggest me Take 3 Duralax tablets together and 1 hour after taking the tablets AQUALAX POWDER (3 powders in 75 gm bottle) = Mix 3 bottles of powder well with 1-2 liters of pure cold water, take the medicine mixer water in small portions for 1-2 hours. I don't how can I teke this...😭🥺

    • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't be nervous! You're going to be fine! I've done a very similar prep before and though it is a LOT of liquid, I've found that chilling the liquid beforehand and using a straw really helps cut down on nausea. Just take your time and go slow and if you feel like very nauseous then take a little break and come back as soon as you feel better. Good luck!

    • @ChronicallyMusical
      @ChronicallyMusical  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never tried clenpiq but I’d probably prefer the miralax route because you can pick the liquid you want to mix it with! I usually use water, but after my most recent one in June, I’m gonna try something else next time.

      A lot of people do! I don’t like Gatorade so I just use water, but the electrolytes from Gatorade would be very helpful for those going through the prep process.
