Damon Hill drives his Dad's race-winning Jaguar E-type

  • Damon Hill was just seven months old when his Dad, Graham, drove a Jaguar E-type to its maiden win at Oulton Park in 1961.
Now, 60 years after that victory, Damon gets behind the wheel of that very same car for an evocative blast around Silverstone.
"You can read the history books, and you can look at the fabulous pictures from back in the day, but I say the same thing every time I drive a car such as this: these things are time capsules, because they don’t change but we do," says Damon.
"They capture a moment. This is a car of its era and was a gorgeous, ground-breaking creation."

The first car I ever drove that wasn't propelled by pedals or was a fairground ride, was an E-type Jag.
I was 16 and we were on holiday, staying at a caravan park in Dawlish Warren. It was a large park with quite a long private road on it.
My older sister's Australian boyfriend came down to visit, bringing with him his E-type.
We needed some groceries from the site shop (which was probably nearly half a mile from our caravan) and he took me with him in the car.
When we came out of the shop, he asked me, "do you want to drive it?
I couldn't believe my ears and he let me drive it back to the caravan. He was quite impressed, especially as I had to manouevre it from between two parked cars (with 18 inches of bonnet that you can't see from the driver's seat). I even got into second gear.
Back at the caravan, my dad told him he must be crazy as the only cars I'd driven before then were dodgem cars.
Later that day, he took me out for a drive to show me what the car was capable of. 😁

Damon is always interesting to listen to and all E-types are gorgeous. He talks about how the car's handling surprised him, the wonderful engine note, etc. So, why not have more normal speed shots accompanied by the sound of that glorious engine rather than a boring succession of slow-mo, arty shots that contribute little. Those of us who watch these videos are enthusiasts in case you've forgotten!

Beautiful historic car, and a well spoken World Champion. But the endless slo mo is the antithesis of the E Type experience. This is no Coupe de Ville. I owned a 1963 model for 45 years. While slow speed cruising with the top down is pleasant, high speed drifting and shifting into top gear at 115 mph while racing a 1960’s American muscle car are among the memories I cherish. The soft top flaps alarmingly above 145 mph. Damon has no idea how poorly those Dunlop disc brakes work in the rain at speed. A snap spin due to ham fisted inputs in slippery conditions will bring you closer to your Maker. The positraction rear differential makes the E Type particularly unsuitable in the snow. That unbelievably long bonnet rising up under hard acceleration is something I will never forget. Removing the engine to replace the clutch is another E Type ownership experience unlike any other.

Greatest video of all time? I think so. What other video on TH-cam can top, "I don't know many competition cars that have a cigar lighter on the dashboard"? And the car is so beautiful. Aesthetic judgements are so subjective. And I'm sure it was some ancient Roman gearhead who first wrote, "De gustibus non est disputandum." But this has to be Top 5 all time.

Tedious piano music is producers getting in the way of the superb content. You have a World Champ son of a World Champ speaking at length and one of the most beautiful bodies cars ever created. So they slow-mo the car, there is little sense of speed, to match the tedious music. Do better Motor Sport!

    • @Grankspoine

I quite agree. Producers are so concerned with making something 'artistic' that they've become lazy and risk-averse, churning out the same cliched combination of ubiquitous minimalist piano and tired tired tired old super slo-mos. This means they don't think about the video's audience - readers of Motor Sport magazine, who are knowledgeable enthusiasts and want to hear the sound of the *car*.

Damon mentions the “...weight of the steering..”. Tell me about it! I have a1966 Mk. 2 3.8. The only criticism I would level at it is the steering; it’s not too bad once you are on the open road, but otherwise.... Power assist modifications are available, but I’ve not got around to that - it’s a dry use only car in very nice condition, so a £2k mod is hardly worth it. Then, of course, there’s the style - oh my,the style ....
