When people are visiting Cambodia, they typically go to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Kampot and Sihanoukville and Battambang is often overlooked. In my opinion, Battambang City and the province around it offer some of the most authentic experiences in Cambodia. It's a great place to see what real Khmer life is like and there are so many things you can do and see. Join me as I take you on a journey through one of my favorite places in Cambodia.

Wow you're good! Thanks for answering that question...pinned!
@@saviyou Can a foreigner own property in Cambodia? I'm currently staying in Phnom Penh on a tourist visa, and I'm loving it.

@@saviyou Glad to know. Thank you.
Swai (P. Hypothalamus) in Khmer (Trey Pra or Pra) and Basa (P. Bocourti) in Khmer ( Trey Pra Kchao or Keir). Same family of fish as the Mekong giant catfish.
I was born in Battambang, and survived the brutal Khmer Rouge. Battambang countryside was very beautiful. I hope that it is still beautiful today. After stopping by my favorite countries of Philippines and Thailand, I will visit Battambang villages (Dang Trang and Boeung Troh to be exact) next year. Regarding the foods, my rules of thumb is when I eat in Khmer restaurant, it is Khmer food. When I eat at AZ Pho, which is Vietnamese restaurant, it is Vietnamese food. When I eat at Texas Roadhouse, it is American food. It doesn't matter what country it is in either.... 😃
I took my Vietnamese friend to a Khmer restaurant and he tried Banchiao, and he said it is very good but it is not Banh Xeo. He wasn't wrong, because it was Banchiao and it was not Banh Xeo. Just like Khmer have Cha-kroeung and Thai have Pad Ka-prao, it may be similar but it is entirely different dish... 😃
The famous Banh Xeo ( Vietnamese ) is very different from the Cambodian kind. Vietnamese use a lot of oil to make the batter so crispy. In Cambodia, They don't do that at all. I have to add this after finishing watching your video. That is the trait of the Cambodian people. When you travel along the road and get stuck some where you don't know anyone. Cambodian people will never let you stay in the open. They will open their house for you to stay overnight and ofcourse some foods. They will never let you go hungry. That's Cambodia. That is the heart of the cambodian society that most westerners don't know.
Cambodians also add toasted coconut flakes into their Banh Cheo filling and never any meat chunks cooked as part of the the crepe itself like the vietnamese do. Also the sauce is slightly made differently too.
@@crew I actually went to vietnam during this trip and I will say that both are good but I like how the vn use a thin rice paper to eat with! Video coming in the near future!
I had Vietnamese Banh Xeo in Orange County, CA. They served it with the thin translucent sheet. It tasted weird with it, so I didn't use it. I still preferred the Khmer version with toasted coconut flakes in the filing. My Banchiao usually included lots of toasted coconut flakes and bean sprout, and I like my dipping sauce a little more too.... 😃
@@crewCambodians use minced pork and Vietnamese use pork slices. Plus we put peanuts and spices in our fish sauce.
@@cookingwanunknownchef4224 yah, I preferred the Khmer ones, not being bias. When I was in OC, I had Vietnamese Banh Xeo and they had sliced tomatoes and the shell was pretty hard, even my Vietnamese roommate said he preferred the Khmer ones.
The Vietnamese or the Kinh ethnic (Vietname have more than 54 ethnic or race) they also love Khmer food, such as bún cá nom panhchok, đu đủ đâm bok lahong, hủ tiếu Nam Vang Phnom penh noodle soup kuy teav... For Vietnamese food, since I'm native Khmer in Prey Nokor Sài Gòn so I love all most any dishes of Vietnamese cuisine along with my Khmer dishes :))
I've fallen in love with Cambodia! I hope I can visit some day. I love how the people at the restaurant were so friendly and inviting ❤
I used to live in Battambang - this was a great trip down memory lane! The surprise on my face when you met Bopa! What a small world! Great video
I’m glad you are able to explain the historical context of each city. I’ve seen a decent amount of TH-camrs about Khmer but no one really digs up deeper details like you mentioned. Keep it coming, I really appreciate it so much.
Thanks so much! I had some more to say but the video kept getting too big and I was running out of footage! Battambang has an interesting back story during the KR. The KR were trying to advance through Banan or Phnom Sampov (I can't remember which ) and BtB had all their forces closing the one route but had they come the other direction they would've taken BtB!
@@saviyou, I believe if you should do a history on each city and province you visit you may get more views. I love it, I been telling my friends and sharing your videos so that they can subscribe as well. I haven’t been to Khmer for at least 14 years. I was only there while I was in the Army stationed in Thailand and I was only in Khmer for a very short brief. Because I wasn’t allowed to go there because I didn’t take my leave.
Yes my daughter just was in Cambodia and she was tired of Cambodia food went to look for pizza and burger and chip . So she says there heaps there now . Cambodia from USA just opening pizza shops and burger shops. Plenty there
The burger was really good, I wish I had more time to try some of the other non-khmer foods there's a lot there now like you said. I'm just curious to taste the difference vs US.
Thank you so much for coming to my place KC restaurant 😊🙏 I"m Happy that you enjoy your Trip in Battambang 🎉😘❤️️🇰🇭🙏
The city looks packed and tired...but its beautiful outside the city. The countryside !! 😊❤
Your videos are getting more interesting. 👍
This has to be my favorite vlog of yours Pu. My grandpa moved from Phnom Penh to Battambang to start his pharmacy business during Lon Non period and we eventually survived the Khmer Rouge there. After the war ended, we returned to Phnom Penh. My mom and my aunt often tell stories about their life there, so every time I go there, I feel very connected to it. It's like I was born there or lived there before.
Glad you enjoyed it, I put a lot of effort into the edit. I wish I had more time to explore the area but I had to leave to take care of my KhmerID in PP. It's a beautiful area and BtB has a lot of potential to be the next major destination for tourism.
Thanx for the tour of the prahok place. I'm speechless 😊
Glad you liked it, but it was Soriya's idea, I had no idea we were stopping there! Now I know to eat only homemade prahok ;)
Classy Hotel is where my grandparents’s house used to stand. A place where I grew up and later where I spent my summers while on break from school in Phnom Penh. The two stories house also had a balcony at the front supported by V shaped pillars. The oval shaped courtyard in front was paved and it was surrounded with takae coconut trees and a champa tree along the fence perimeter. In the middle of the courtyard was a flag pole that I remember seeing my grandfather stringing up the flag. It’s on this courtyard that I first drove my first car, one powered with a battery that you could pull out and charge. My mother got married there, a big wedding which I still have pictures of, courtesy of a friend of a relative who happened to be there while visiting from Australia. That piece of land was given to my grandmother by her grandmother. My heart breaks, thinking about all this.
Yeah, we’d stay at The Classy and ate at White Rose. I recommend both of these places if you’re in Battambang. Thank you Savi for that beautiful aerial view of the city.
The babaw was so good at White Rose!
@@saviyou yup! That’s what I got, with everything’s in it.
Great job Savi! Love the info!
This is a great review, thank you!!
Great video, thanks.
i agree, Battambang is charming and there is plenty of activity and festivals are very lively. The people are kind and it feels more authentic then say Phnom Penh without the insane traffic. The outskirts of Battambang there are many enjoyable places for both locals and tourists. ♥Battambang
Great video,

good content. The Battambang art scene intrigues me
Wow great video looks like a fantastic place to visit thanks for sharing great job
I don't mean to spill the beans but facts. Many Cambodian people killed their own people like they killed chicken for food not too long ago.
Thanks for the video bro! I really don't know where I am going to live yet, but this would help me.❤😊
Well edited video, sir.
Beautiful Battambang city, awesome tour.🥰👍🙏🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭
Hello Savi🙏👍, I will be there very soon brother. Cheers and have fun 👋
Great video Savi 👍! Seems like you're two steps ahead of me. I'll be in Battambong on the 16th November. We'll have to hook up another time for a beer & banh xeo😋 . Safe travels man! 🙏😎
During my next visit I might announce it so I can meetup with viewers. This last trip was very unplanned and I wasn't sure where i would be from week to week.

Your work is getting more interesting. Hope to see you develop that Eco Tour, Lodge & Restaurant at your place and Uncle's. Will definitely visit. Get some ideas from the Thai's & Seyha & Food has a few nice places on his channel.
Thanks friend, I'm working on it! My plan is to build a something in the style of traditional stilt homes but with modern amenities like AC and solar. It'll mainly be for me but I'm hoping to airbnb it. If it works out, I'll build more but we'll see how it goes!
Great video! Long live Battambang. 💯👍🙏🎅
Classy Hotel looks lovely. The fish processing place is scary and I can imagine the smells.
The Bancheo and all the Cambodian food looks great. I definitely need to visist Battembang.
If you want to taste authentic Cambodian cuisine, this area is really the best for it!
Hope you can build the house in Cambodia soon so when we have chance to go Battambang we can stay some days there!
I'm making plans now I hope by next year it will be finished!
Good video. I love Battambang. My favorite fruits in Battambang are sweet passion fruit, large guava, and pomelo. I am still debating, whether should I retire in Battambang or Kompot.
I didn't even mention that BtB is a major fruit producing area! I spent a few days in Kampot and it's nice but overrun with greasy old expats shopping for women. I vote BtB!
Great travle video.
wow thanks for the view. I was looking at that hotel. but I wasn't sure. I booked 3 other hotels. have you visited Norea sangkae?
I can feel the shadow of casey in your vlog 😊

I stay at this same hotel on a visit 4 years ago. There is a breakfast buffet served downstairs in the morning.
Beautiful hotel!
How are you doing? When you have time you should go visit Pailin Province.
Next time I will!
@@saviyou How about Kratie, Mondulkiri? Those are places that we rarely hear of, and never seen in the public eyes.
Ah man, why you gotta show that prohok factory... now that's all I see when I eat it 😮
It was kinda crazy to see them making it. I usually eat homemade prahok.
Wow very good nice hotel when iam go visit Cambodia but iam looking this hotel
Last time I stayed in Battambang was at the Emerald hotel and it was only $16 and I spent a night at the Vy Chhe it's about $20 a night if you're looking for a good bargain hotels in that area. But $40 is pretty good for all you get at the Classy. Difference between 4star and 3star hotels.
Nice. This is my dads hometown.
I've been to Phnom Penh & Siem Reap & both are wonderful. My only issue is how often I was stopped by TUK TUK drivers, it was difficult to walk around both cities. I'm planning a return trip & Battambang is at the top of the list.
Siem Reap is the worst for aggressive tuktuk drivers, I always use Grab to get around. In Battambang it happens around the hotels mainly but they aren't too aggressive.
As a kun Khmer who was born there and moved to New Zealand as a 5 year old, I took my two Kiwi friends to the homeland from Nov 1-17 this year and our favourite city/province by FAR was Battambang. The vibe is so chill and a slower pace compared to Siem Reap, people saw me as a kun Khmer and would automatically speak to me in Khmer (lots of Khmer people think I look borotes due to my height, build and tattoos) and no one would haggle us like in Siem Reap with the Fxxking annoying tuk tuk drivers. We only spent 2 days there and we regret not staying longer! We did a full day tour of Pnom Sampov, Pnom Banon and watch the bats leave the cave at sunset. Can't forgot to mention the food there as well. Top, top cuisine and desserts - top rated for a reason. Visit Battambang people!! :)
Twenty one species of this catfish type. Chao Priya river and Mekong river. Bla Swai (Pangasius Hypothalamus), Basa (P. Bocourti), Tra, Sutchi and Iridescent Shark. The largest is in Mehkong river called Bla Buk/giant catfish.
i like your videos ever consider traveling to other areas of southeast asia?
I stay there 10 month where you were at crossed the street from the hotel the bridge street right next to wat kandal
I’ve sleep in many places in Battambang but I think classy hotel is one of the best hotel in Battambang.
I love Classy hotel. We stay there 2017. They have free fancy extraordinary breakfast included. Service was excellent. Hotel is extremely clean. Breakfast was delicious. I can't wait to visit Classy Hotel again.
I forgot to show the breakfast…yes it’s pretty good fresh omelette, babaw and katiew were my favorites.
that corner place reminds me of a place all the locals call the no name restaurant
how do you feel about the heat there? was way to hot for me all over the country. wanted to run back to U.S after a month
I loved Battambang and I'm considerin😊g moving there.
It's a lovely area, the city itself has a lot of potential
I miss my old time school sine be for Khmer rouge . I when back very thing have changed the mountain not look beautiful like before !
What’s the song in the intro? It really fits the video ☺️
Lovely to see.
PS. Men get their nails done these days?
Were you able to come back to USA ?
It seems like Mi Kola = មីកូឡា is not in the video ។ Anyone born in Battambong knows Mi KoLa.
I was adopted from Cambodia in 99 and I long to go back ❤
Where do you live now?
Banh Chao came during the French time. We all have it during the same time. There another Khmer words for it.
What’s the Khmer word for banh xeo?
Any clues on cashing out crypto into a Khmer bank account? eg from an exchange like Kraken etc using usd into khmer bank Riel... I have unsubstantiated reports that they wont accept payments from digital platform?
Sounds like you’re trying to avoid paying taxes 😂 I don’t know honestly but you’d prob have to deposit into a bank that accepts payments from crypto and do a wire transfer.
Khmer Banh Chow and Vietnamese Banh Xeo are not the same. Like many Asian dishes there are regional variations catering to the local taste.
Awesome bro. Was there last year with my Khmer GF. Yummy food man
I'm surprised battambang is not getting a lot of infrastructure development the way phnom penh capital is getting. It's the second largest city in cambodia. It's also strategic being much closer to Bangkok than phnom penh is. If cambodia wants to attract more tourists, they should develop this city along with koh kong. Battambang could be a trading and tourist hub and would benefit from its close proximity to bangkok.
They have plans to build a new highway to connect siem reap within the next 5 years and also have been working on infrastructure improvements within the city.
Hey Savi, do you have contacts to the land owner that’s selling that land in Phnom sompov?
You should go buy in Kampot. I know someone there.
Only my uncle but so many people are asking about it already
Be careful about buying land in Cambodia. Alot of shady people
Hey advice I work with couple TH-cam stars with content advice did the talks with deportation etc. and focus on your craft find tourist include them and what they visit what they eat etc.. bro you can become nice with this stuff!! I am positive you will win more people make better thumbnails follow mark weins you speak very well show great Airbnb stays and hotels give more restaurant owners and hosts along with all your visits because you have great tone ! Cheers
That's where I want to live when I retire.
I'm planning to build a winter home here :)
Battambang needs a 5 stars hotel
How much the classy hotel brother?
I paid $40 per night
Only in Cambodia is the flash is cheaper then a new car lol 😅
So sorry -- I much prefer the looks of Siem Reap. That city is much more beautiful by comparison to this place in my opinion. Not comparing the country surrounding them just within the city's. Being an old retired American who only speaks English - the large expat community would also be desirable companionship ! And the cost of living is hard to beat anywhere. The airport has cheap one hour flights to Bangkok for fun or quality medical care. So -- "what's not to like" - ? - It has what is needed. (even 50 cent beer)
The guy who grinned the fish has cigarette in his mouth; REALLY? 🤮 Although, I didn’t that it was lit. I have seen the hidden video here in the US where a guy was smoking while grinding the beef and the ashes fell into the meat and he didn’t care, unbelievable! Thanks for sharing your videos ❤
What the name this hotel
Classy Hotel
Battambong city is stagnant it looks almost exactly the same way it did 10 years ago.
Hopefully the new initiatives will advance it in the next couple years. I saw them redoing alot of the sewage system so maybe it's a sign that they are working on infrastructure first.
Thank for your uncensored experience of the fish processing vendors.
The total lack of hygiene is a reminder of why these countries are considered third world. 🇰🇭
The fact that this mass production is for distribution to markets and restaurants throughout the country is frightening.
It’s not unfair to presume that the rat and rodent population is off the charts and their waste and excrement is in the sauce 😮
Yes, where are the food inspectors?
They been making it this way since before food inspectors.
I was so surprised that there were not flies, I honestly think that the smell is so potent that it keeps pests away!
@@saviyou this is a classic example of why food inspectors were created, lol.

Not much development until recently they started to do more now that the new roads built. I think 5 years from now it will be much different.
