  • Today is all about building our custom DIY roof rack for the MK8 Ford Transit, we needed a frame to secure all of our 7 solar panels onto, and needed it cheap and lightweight. We used 3.2mm thick aluminium angle, and brackets were secured using 5mm bolts with nylon nuts and split washers.
We also used some 45mm x 45mm unistrut, and 20mm hard rubber mounts to give us the height and stability we needed. The whole thing was secured into the factory mounting points with 8mm bolts. If you have questions about the process, drop us an email or just ask in the comment section.
If you are new to the channel and don't know who are, we are James & Kelly, 2 travel enthusiasts from the UK who have been travelling around Europe since 2022. Now we have purchased our 2018 MK8 Jumbo Ford Transit to convert into our dream campervan, which we intend on driving all of the way around the world.

Easy! Throw the brush away & buy another one or read the label for the appropriate thinner! Like your wit & your skill. & that you do this by yourself without the aid of the other half! 😊

Well that is one easy solution 🤣. Thank you for the kind words, Kelly does help more than you see on camera, she painted the whole rack and helped to lift it onto the roof, although thankfully it was more awkward than heavy 👌

unique approach to a rack, have a couple videos on basic solar, just starting a new system for my van.

Its different admittedly, but we wanted something lightweight, you can make it lighter using 21mm unistrut but would need bigger spacers. We managed 700W but could have had 800w without the 2nd fan.

Thank you, it's quite an easy and very lightweight solution.. In fact Kelly passed it up to me on her own. 😁

Great video, thank you. Converting a transit also. Did you use steel or aluminium Unistrut?

Galvanised steel, we have alot of panels going on so wanted something strong.
