  • Humira: The Most Financially Successful Drug Ever!
Humira has made $200 Billion over the course of its pharmaceutical life. The original Humira patent expired, but the makers of Humira--AbbVie--filed an additional 132 patents and extended its patent-life to 2023.
During that time, AbbVie raised the price of Humira 30 times from $522 per syringe to $2,984 per syringe. It now costs $78,000 per year to treat one patient with Humira.
Consequently, AbbVie rose to be worth $270 Billion and is the 23rd most valuable company on the stock market... $80 Billion larger than the Walt Disney Company.
Express Scripts, Optum and Prime Therapeutics will offer biologic alternatives to Humira in 2023, but CVS Caremark has yet to announce any alternative to the expensive medication.
Humira shows how completely ineffective PBMs are in controlling specialty pharmacy costs.
Alternative solutions include: 1) Travel to Mexico/Canada to buy specialty drugs for less, 2) Hire own specialists (e.g. rheumatologists) who will be better stewards of the employers resources while still following clinical best-practices, 3) Have lawyers try to get plan members that take specialty medications on Disability so that Medicare will cover their medication costs, 4) Legislative Advocacy to counter the Pharma lobbying that allowed for confiscatory pricing of specialty pharmacy medications.

Dr. Bricker, I just started following you a few weeks ago and the videos are fantastic!! Do you think ICER could have a bigger role to curb healthcare spending? Although the situation in the US is just not acceptable, regions that have strict pricing controls e.g. Europe now starting to see companies deciding not to launch drugs there e.g. bluebird bio... it is a difficult balance, but clearly US is situation is not sustainable...

Thank you Dr. Bricker. Two questions if you dont mind answering them. Why do you not have a podcast already? Would you consider doing an overview on the upcoming biosimilar landscape, specifically price points and benefits of specific drugs despite them being considered therapeutic equivalents?

@@MandinaCasas unfortunately supplements did not help birdshot uveitis, and I feel that I have no choice but to take the traditional path. I have been on Humira for six weeks but it hasn't kicked in. The only thing which had helped me in the past were steroid implants with horrible side effects. I have been praying for a miracle because I feel trapped in a vicious cycle. I hope you have more success. Please, keep me posted. 😞🙏🌞

I’ve been on methotrexate for several years. I was on plaquenil many years until it started affecting my eyes and doctor said no more. I’ve tried sulphasalazine. Used Motrin. All these are no longer helping so now I’ve been given Humira. I’m not so happy about the cost! No so happy about not being able to move pain free either.

Now that the biosimilars are out, I’d be curious if you could make a video explaining how CVS benefits from their new company Cordavis distributing Hyrimoz and Humira with their own unique NDCs, as opposed to just using the products from Sandoz and Abbvie for their plans and specialty pharmacy.

As a follow up can you go further upstream and do a video on the political and lobbying up at the headwaters of our US healthcare problems: for med price gauging there is so little price control in the US for medications and meaningful policing of patent limits (so highlight the Us legislation process and congressional committees, how regulatory bodies are told to work and have severe limits, how the money flows). Perhaps highlight as an example of pricing related corruptions you could show Medicare price negotiation was shockingly blocked by Big Pharma via legislation.

Thank you Dr. Bricker for this eye opening video! What is your opinion on deregulating the laws around import of medicines from other countries which are currently limited to a 90 day supply?
Wouldn’t the ability to import biosimilars from countries with cheaper alternatives be a potential solution?
