That's a nice looking helmet. I started out with an open-faced helmet because I felt claustrophobic in a full face (and I wanted a retro look to match my old bike.) Turns out I just had to find the right helmet. Some have better visibility than others, and there's plenty that have a retro vibe. Now I only wear the full face. It's a Torc T-1. Looks great and it's super comfortable and affordable. Half the price of a Bell.
My first Helmet I bought a month ago was a full face from AGV for 260€ Feels pretty good to me and it looks dope, tested a few. It's tight but doesn't hurt or anything. Has ECE and DOT but sadly not Snell.
I went with the bell qualifier DLX, I installed anti fog inserts from Amazon on both the clear and tinted lenses... the helmet was $149 and I think the inserts were from Raleri and were $28 a piece... they work fantastic. My goal was to stay under 200 for my first helmet... almost made it. Lol.
Excellent video. I’m about to restart motorcycling after a 20 year hiatus. Motorcycles and equipment have changed a lot in that time. Any advice you can give in the equipment is well appreciated.
I got a HJC CL17 since it's a budget snell rated helmet. Really comfortable and a lot lighter than my old one, but the wind noise is quite loud in that helmet.
Granted I've got the modular version of it, but I agree that its an AMAZING helmet. As for the pin-lock system... I've been wearing it from 80's to 40's or 50's. Its almost impossible to fog the visor up even with the vents closed as it comes with a pre-applied anti-fog coating. The only times it's fogged on me that the chin vent didn't clear it, I just had to open the visor slightly (it has a "vent" stop for the visor) that cleared it. Then upwards of 10-15 mph close it completely. I have noticed that the chin curtain doesn't really protect from air blowing up into my face/ eyes, but its not terrible, keeps air movement to keep my head cool, and when I wear my neck gaiter, wind is pretty well sealed out entirely. As for the modular version, steel clips that clamp down on steel pins, its a great helmet overall and I'd definitely recommend the line.
One thing to note that if you get this helmet with the "Hart luck skull" graphic you can get this helmet for $168 ish (It was $130 when I got it) and save a bit of money! I just bought one of these about a month ago... I'm not to happy with it, as soon as I hot Highway speeds it starts wiggling around on my head, however it's an awesome commuter in winter time because I picked up the Pinlock Visor and you can have ALL the vents closed and it wont fog up. I'm just gonna use it as a winter helmet for now!
My first helmet was an HJC FG-17. I like it so much I ended up buying another for a back-up. DOT and Snell rated, pin lock ready, fiberglass composite shell, and I really like the center shield lift which it has. It normally sells for under $200, but I bought both mine on fire for under $150 each.
I kept hearing 'smell rated' and I was thinking 'good, my helmet stinks. I'm glad someones rating them on their smell'. I checked. nope. This helmet is not smell rated.
You make it sound like modular helmets are less safe than full face, not necessarily accurate. I ride in a HJC IS-MAX 2, it is ECE rated and gets 4☆ on the Sharp test ratings. It is fitted with a Pinlock insert to prevent fogging and an integral sun visor. The chin bar movement makes taking the helmet on and off so much easier and more comfortable than a regular full face and has the same safety ratings as the the IS17 which is my other helmet.
I have always been against the modular helmets but was very tempted to get one because of all the perks. Until a month ago when my friend crashed behind me with a HJC modular on (not sure what model, base helmet approx 3 years old). When I parked my bike and ran to him the modular part had flipped up due to the crash and his helmet actually flew off. Luckily he came out of it with bruises and a broken collar bone. ATGATT
@@johnkelley2615 I know some modular helmets only have plastic catches for the chin bar and therefore are prone to steering off on impact, I believe the Sharp helmet test include impact testing of the chin bar. I don't really want to test my helmet myself if I can avoid it.
Now the temperature in Arizona is getting down and I have seen a few coyotes crossing the streets. My question is; what if a coyote is hit by a vehicle, who should we contact? This seems to be a silly question but I am new here. Thanks
I tend to like modular helmets. On the plus side lots of them have drop down visors and we all know that good vision is one of the most important features of a good helmet. The pop up chin guard does come in handy at times. Then if you ever need someone to breath for you, it is possible without helmet removal.
@@MrThomaskirchner True Snell has a 5 kg drop to the chin guard with certain deflection standards that is done 3 times. I have yet to see a cresh that has two strong impacts to the same spot, let alone three. On the other hand snell will rate open face helmets with 0 chin and face protection. You can get modular with the ece standard. But I think that a drop down sun visor is a safety feature overlooked by many, because good vision is your first line of defence on a motorcycle.
I ended up with the AGV K1. Why? Because it FIT me. I grew up with Bell helmets and respected them.. unfortunately I seem to be in between their sizes and they felt uncomfortable.
Bell makes good helmets but they're usually noisy...I rocked a Nolan for a few years but it caused neck and shoulder strained that was painful after two days riding...I went with a Schuberth C3 that is very quiet...no matter what you decide on be smart and buy at year end sales and save quite a lot...IMHO beginner's need just as good a helmet as an old veteran..don't skimp on something cheap....
@DanDanTheFireman I just passed my MFC course this weekend and I remembered that you had a field guide e-book I think? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Can you please let me know if you have it and where I would go to get one? Thanks!
How close is the size to your head measurement? I see the M is 57-58 cm and the L is 59-60 cm. I measure a little over 58 cm so can you recommend what size I should go with?
I got my head shape by taking a pic with my phone from above and compared to outlines found online. I've got baby cheeks so even with a helmet that fits my head shape, I get pressure there. I'm hoping my helmet breaks in a bit more.
ElectricGorilla85 On some helmets, you can change the cheek pads to a different size that may fit you better. You should look into replacement cheek pads perhaps.
Glad to hear some common advice I had heard before, especially about head shape. I myself am a round oval, and sadly that means my range of selection narrows significantly. That pretty much means that cost becomes more of a wincing, “git ready fer th’ hit” reaction, as I have yet to find a helmet that is comfortable, protective, AND cheap.
Hey DDFM.... I love the mirrors you have on your motorcycle and I would love to have them, can you tell me which model are they?? 🤔 Brand?? And how much are they?? Greetings from Mexico

In the UK it comes with the pinlock as standard

So true... Also the "round oval" should be called "circular".
I GOT MY FIRST BIKE TODAY! It’s a beautiful cruiser, I’m in love.
Scorpion Exo-R420 is also a great snell rated helmet for 150$ various sizes and designs. I love mine
I've got the Bell DLX Qualifier with the MIPS system and Transitions lens. I paid about $200 for it. I like it a lot.
Currently using the scorpion EXO 420 very quiet and comfortable cannot recommend enough

I tried the HJC i70 Karon this season. Pin lock, full face, for about 200. One complaint, it can be tricky to open with gloves on.
Thank you so much......I appreciate it....I am getting a Ryker next month!
You can actually buy a pinlock replacement shield for it now.

Dale Voigt modular helmets don’t meet Snell usually because the chin protection doesn’t work...

The bell srt's visor has an anti-fogging film applied already.
The head shape chart shown looked to be mixed up according to the descriptions
I have a suspicion that the 34% impacts on the chin part is a lot due to the fact that it protrudes so far out...
With having such good ventilation how is the wind noise in the helmet?
Opinion on modular helmet for beginners?
I have a Bell modular helmet (can't remember the model) but it's really loud with the wind. Would a HD modular helmet work better with the wind noise?
