Arturia V-Collections 7 or UVI Synth Anthology 3

  • A few days ago UVI released the Synth Anthology 3. This is a collections of sampled vintage synths that can be used in either the free UVI Workstation or in the UVI Falcon synthesizer.
    At first glace this looks to offer something the Arturia V-Collection does as well: access to vintage synth sounds. So how do they compare?
    That's actually a difficult question to answer as they both use completely different approaches to supply these sounds.
    In this video I try to break it down as much as possible without going in too deep. I hope this will help people to understand the differences so they can chose for themselves where to spend their money.

    I have to say that although I'm a huge fan of UVI products, SA is not one that I use a lot.
    Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good sounds in there, but in general the quality and selection is not as good as in the individual instruments. I'd rather pick a couple of their synths instead (the new PX Memories is a monster) or if you can afford it, the Vintage Vault of course. Quality wins over quantity in my book.
    I see a lot of people bashing UVI for being sample based, but to be honest it sounds more like the real thing than the emulations, because it IS the real thing.

    The thing for me is: since I purchased Falcon I feel limited in every other synth VST, and although the others resemble an actual hardware synth it may be about time we let go of that idea and just go for the best design environment. Falcon wins.
    One issue I do have: since I told my wife Falcon can do almost anything she frowns upon every VST purchase ever since.

      😂 Yeah that's an issue. But even something that does everything doesn't fully quench the thirst for that "one more thing" 😅
      Falcon is undoubtedly very powerful and the build in effects are great. I think the biggest downside of Falcon is that it can feel a bit like working in Excel though. It isn't quite as low effort as some other synths and setting things up can get a bit tedious. So I don't find myself doing much patching from scratch. The nice thing is though that there's tons of presets to play around with that can be 100% customized under the hood 👍🏻

      @@SyntheticFuture Yes I agree, Falcon is a programmers tool not so much a musicians tool. I happen to be a life time programmer so I am fine with it. Not for everyone!

      That is absolutely true 👍🏻 Actually I have a video arguing it's the best part of the V-Collection. Thanks for watching and pointing this out.

      @@SyntheticFuture Awesome. Yeah, I own V Collection and am thinking about buying the Anthology, too. I'm more a presets guy and I agree that the UI of the V Collection can be pretty overwhelming. Not sure yet if the sounds of the Anthology are actually worth the additional invest. Falcon is not an option for me.

    • @SyntheticFuture
      @SyntheticFuture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tombruckner2556 it's mostly that there's no unified UI. So if you want to get everything out of the V-Collection you basically have to learn all the synths, and that's beyond what I'm interested in doing really. But with just the presets and basic understanding of synthesis you can quite easily tweak small things in the presets and that alone offers near endless sounds.
      If SA3 is worth it on top of the V-Collection is tough to say. After doing the Analog Lab patch playthrough where I flick through random patches for 30 minutes and doing the same in SA3 I do feel like SA3 for me has more sounds that instantly clicked with me. It's only a small comparison ofc and it covers maybe 1% of both preset libraries so... your mileage may vary. But the SA3 team is for sure extremely skilled in patch making and there's a bunch of sounds in SA3 that I definitely never heard anywhere before =)

      @@SyntheticFuture Thanks for sharing these additional insights, appreciate it. When I first tried out V Collection, I was actually a bit disappointed because many of the presets sounded a bit "artificial", and I even had a couple of serious glitches in combination with my Steinberg UR44. Unsure if this was related to macOS Catalina, but sometimes the sounds were completely overdriven, and I had to shut-down everything. I mostly need this stuff live on stage, so this was kind of a show-stopper for me and left a somewhat uneasy feeling. Do you think the UVI stuff is "stage-ready"?

    • @SyntheticFuture
      @SyntheticFuture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tombruckner2556 I've never had any problems with Workstation or Falcon myself but I don't run MacOS and I don't do live gigs 😅
      Workstation is a free download though and it has like 10 introduction patches build in, so you can try and play around with it to see how stable it runs for you and if it meets your live requirements.
      Another suggestion would be Plugin Alliance Gig Performer. No personal experience but I have heard from a ton of people that it is absolutely amazing and stable and it is designed for live keyboard players. I believe that you can grab a free demo from the PA site just like all their other products. It's a tad more expensive but it would allow you to possibly keep using the sounds you are used to =)

    Great video. It will help people to decide. I'm very happy Falcon user. Synth Anthology 3 sounds amazing much better that Arturia by miles and there's a lot tweaking, layers and waveform. With Falcon you have nearly limitless power of modern synth and sampling creation. Falcon FX cost hundreds of euros and the freedom to create all kind of hybrid patches. Falcon is the modern Powerhouse.

      @@montazownianr1 My bet is for Arturia. Without Falcon power you just get a presets machine. Forget about layers or make it a synth with the onboard waveforms and a ton of modulation or insane FX modules that Falcon offers. But it's great for the money.

    I've been a die-hard arturia user and decided to give UVI a look. Arturia wins hands down when it comes to the user interface. The sounds on UVI are good but so frustrating to move between instruments, etc. It feels like UVI was a high-school programing project that just kept getting stacked on. Nope, Not for me.

      @@SyntheticFuture 2 years ago I paid 300 Euros for IK Total Studio instead of 1200. The magic word is Black Friday. Those products may be bought for much less - timing is crucial. Last year I bought other plugins for much much less. You are right regarding money - When I was 16 (1983) I worked 6 months to earn 2/3 of the 600 US Doolars needed for the Roland SH101. Today I am 53 and hence can afford more.

      @@LightShadow I actually made a video on the topic of smart shopping =) So yes you can get these for much less (I did as well. V-Collection including OB-XA for 240, UVI Falcon including SA3 + 2 expansions for 240 as well).
      For comparison sake I never assume those prices though as I can't guarantee them. And even that 500 + 599 for the vintage synth bundle would be 1100. Now the vintage synth bundle will probably drop during sales. But I doubt it drops more than 50%? So let's say on a fairly good deal all would still run you 750ish.
      Which is an amazing deal for that much software and you are practically set for live. And not a single hardware synth can touch it. Buuuut... It's a fair bit of money 😉

    • @SyntheticFuture
      @SyntheticFuture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say "it depends". If you just have UVI workstation your options are a bit more limited. If we are talking UVI Falcon + SA3 vs V-Collection it still depends. SA3 is sample based and as such less easy to manipulated than just a straight synth emulation. That being said Falcon is one hell of a synth and def. more capable than all the V-Collection synths combined. It does take more effort and knowledge though.
