After my dad died earlier this year I was helping my mom sort through his files, and he still had the old manuals for the NES, Zapper and Power Pad my grandparents got us when I was six. They’re all that’s left of my childhood Nintendo collection, and I love having them on my bookshelf.
I loved that manual for Pokemon Blue. Even if the type chart was wrong lol. I still remember the way that manual SMELLED, even all these years later. Maybe it's like Proust and his madeleines for me lol
Wow. Memories of opening up a game I couldn't wait to play and devouring the instruction manual in the back of my mom's gas guzzling Buick on the way home. Good times
In addition to the Pokemon Red/Blue topic, there's the fact there's only THREE ghost-type Pokemon in the entire game and what's more, their secondary type was Poison... which made them WEAK to Psychic. On that note, Bug was also supposedly strong against Psychic... in which most Bugs ALSO had Poison as their secondary typing. And on top of THAT, the Pokemon anime continued the "lie" that Ghosts beat Psychic when Ash brought a Haunter to make Sabrina laugh. So even the animated adaptation perpetuated the "lie" we were told in the actual game and instruction manual :P
The manual for Super Mario Bros 2 reveals that Birdo is trans. Listed as “Ostro”, the manual describes Birdo as “he thinks he is a girl and spits eggs from his mouth. He’d rather be called ‘Birdetta’”. OK, so not the best use of pronouns to describe a trans character, but it was 1988 after all.
I’ve always thought that the point of the Toads being turned into bricks was that it was only the ones who actually give you power-ups and coins, and once they’re not brick blocks anymore you’ve “freed” the Toad in that block. Any you could break weren’t Toads, just normal bricks.
Home computer games used to come in huge boxes with a lot of the stuff you can only get in collector’s editions now. It was standard to have an illustrated instruction manual, usually a map that would double as a poster, and often stickers or plastic collectibles. Although we loved them, it wasn’t appreciated enough at the time. It was when console games came in much smaller boxes with just a manual that those things started to disappear. I never imagined we’d lose the manual as well.
Never understood the psychic-ghost type when I was little because like you said, the tv show and the game dialogue made it sound like psychic were weak to ghost but the game said differently
Back in the old days of Commodore 64 and Sinclair Spectrum games not reading the manual could render a game virtually unplayable. I'm thinking of 'Driller' for the Commodore 64 mostly. But 'The Sentinel' springs to mind also. Along with the button presses needed for all of those Summer/Winter/World Games things. Not a strange thing as such, but didn't the manual for the SNES 'Secret of Mana' actually include a walkthrough for the first few hours of the game?
I think Robotnik is a feminist in the sense that he doesn't target women for being women, or treat them any different from men. He's exploit them just the same as he exploits men. No worse, or better treatment
I miss being able to glance at a list of the controls without having to call up the options menu on screen. Having said that Playstation 1&2 manuals had an annoying duplication where you got a picture of the controller with all the buttons labelled - L1, L2,cross,square etc then another one with the actions for each button. (Xbox was also guilty of this)
I would have thought that the Famicom version of The Legend Of Zelda mentioning using the microphone on the second controller would trigger a sound that would defeat all of the Pols Voice would be on this list. Also, what about early PC games requiring the manual to fight against piracy. I figured that would be on this list too.
So in a stack of books I got from the thrift store I kept on the back of my toilet I found a Mario Bros duck hunt manual. That's how I found out player 2 could control the ducks
The full book manual in the big box release of 'Earthbound' for the SNES includes an actual real scratch and sniff page. That HAS to be stranger than anything in this video shirley? I managed to get close to 200 sovs for my complete version of Earthbound when I sold it about 15 years or so ago. I bet it's worth even more now. And one of my major selling points on my ebay listing was indeed 'scratch and sniff page completely intact!' because I never had the heart to damage the book by scratching the covering off. lol
My only complaint is that they don't do digital manuals, don't really care about cutting down more trees to have a chunk of paper I'll look at once when I could have a digital version that doesn't fuck the planet as much to also look at once.
Feminism isn’t about “not mistreating women” but rather treating women and men equally so if Robotnik was evil to men and intentionally NOT evil to women, that in itself would be sexist.
Wario world for the GameCube somehow I missed that game will definitely try a and emulate it as I love 3d platformers and that looks like just my kind of game
@@therunawaykid6523 oh I was referring to the 2D wario game. It was in the first min of the video. But yes, Wario world is a forgotten GameCube game, it’s pretty good. Nothing groundbreaking but it’s solid
Sorry but Samus in manual in japanese is "he". Japanese writers use 彼 (kare, "he, him") three times in text you even used highlighted in the video at 4:35. This pronoun, かれ, use was clearly intended as misdirection, meaning the Japanese writers definitely intended for the player to believe that Samus was a man at first. So this wasn’t a localization change or mistake at all - this trickery was included in the Japanese manual from the very start. I've always thought she was hiding her gender or saying she was a cyborg and we have something in the manual that other headhunters think or like propaganda. "They" in japanese is "karera" (he and others) sound similar, but real gender neutral would be "ano kata" or "ano hito" = this person / human.
The use of 'he' and 'him' may have been misleading but the English language is completely lacking in singular gender neutral pronouns. 'They' and 'them' are being popularized but it's a bit of a cludge since those are _plural_ pronouns and the rule for general usage, singular, where gender was unknown was to default to 'he' and 'him' so calling it a choice isn't really fair. English was actually way ahead of the curve when it comes to gender neutral language in general but the lack of singular pronouns that aren't dehumanizing (literally a division between animate and inanimate) has been a sticking point for quite a while now.
Robotnik as a megalomaniac, sadistic animal tormentor and "feminist" actually makes sense. It also explains where he got his college education frok and extra incentive for players to defeat him.
Just wanna give triple jump their flowers for giving me content to keep my mind off the rough times.

I got a bunch of them on my shelf! Game manuals are sweet!

I must admit they came in handy during long car trips.
I've been buying manuals for my GBA games

Skies of Arcadia time! In the manual, the element match-up table is useless, since it’s colour coded… and the manual is printed in black and white!

Thank you Triple Jump! Keep up the great work and content of gaming stuff 🍻 🎮
One of my favourites was SMRPG. The entire manual was "hosted" by Luigi.

Shout out to Tekken 1 manuals for even telling us their blood type lol. Kazuya was AB which is interesting lol

Some times, they still have whole booklets with games, like Witcher 3,

Caesar 3 was brutal. Idk if I made it through 2 levels as a kid. Now I can blame the manual, thankfully.

Surely someone's sexist if they mistreat human women not animals 🤔

Always amazed at how these generic list video's can stretch simple amounts of information needlessly out as long as possible.
not true there where plenty of Female video game charters back then and wasn't that big of a deal
