    Gram Parsons was an incredibly talented songwriter. His influence on rock, country, and rockin'-country songwriters and bands is still felt today. His uncanny knack for saying and playing the right phrase at precisely the right moment still resonates 37 years after he played his last chord.

      @@schmozzer Chris Hillman must be really pissed off that he never gets much credit for his founding role in the Flying Burrito Brothers. @@frankieelen7238 Don't let your blood boil. That sounds dangerous. Gram was the front man of the band, and that was Hillman's choice. Gram said he asked Chris to do more of the lead vocals, but Chris didn't want to. He was a shy man.

    Parson should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame. He made traditional country music both cool and accept able to a whole generation of young Americans. But also mick and Keith of the Stones.he was a pivotal figure in country music history. Sin City is a country music classic!

    • @russell2449
      @russell2449 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He wasn't strictly country, what made him so famous was his fusion of country and rock, although he didn't like the term "Country Rock" preferring "Cosmic America" lol. So many country rock/rock country groups owe their careers to his unique trailblazing style.

      JB... Will you please make sure try to book Gram Parsons Derry Down for this (potentially) final tour you're talking about doing?
      It's in Winter Haven, FL. Was the first venue Parsons ever performed in. Built by his parents so that he could hone his craft.
      Google it for the website that tells the complete history.

    The lyrics are about L.A. The song was written after someone broke in to the house that the FBB were staying at and stole all their equipment. The guy on the 31st floor was some record label head who screwed Parsons over earlier. The last verse is about RFK (shot and killed in L.A.).

    I'm new to these guys.
    Good song. Great harmonies. I'd have thought it was Don and Phil Everly from 1959, if I didn't know otherwise.
    I gather they were Everly fans.
    I'm a musician--small time. But, I understand the call of the road. And, trying to find 'something'. It can be a terrible temptress.
    Still, every time I see another victim lose their battle for life, I wish they could have held on.
    The roll call of such lost souls is long, and, not over.
    To you out there who decided to abandon that life, to have a family, and survived--you were the real winners.
    I'd be willing to live without ten of the worlds greatest songs, if ten more names could be added to those who survived.
    Sorry. This is a lonely-sounding song. When I read GP's story, it drew me in. RIP.

    I bought "The GIlded Palace of Sin" within the first week of its release. I was not expecting something so country - but it deeply effected me, as it continues to do almost 40 years later. At the time I got it many people thought I was strange for playing it over and over but it still sounds great today - pure and timeless. Back then I even listened to it on acid and its deeply soulful quality made that quite an experience, too. Hillman and Parsons had one of THE great vocal blends.

      Chris Hillman learned a lot of harmonizing tricks from years of playing in a band with Crosby and Mcguinn. I'm not undermining his talent by any means, he has a lot of talent. He said before in an interview that he entered the Byrds as a disciple of Mcguinn, and left as McGuinn's equal.

    A lot of that night footage was filmed in Hollywood on Sunset and Hollywood Blvd. I grew up in L.A. and started hanging out in Hollywood around the late 80s/early 90s. It's so weird that it looked pretty much the same two decades later. The gas station at 1:02 is Sunset Oil (that used to be a 76) at San Vicente and Sunset, right across the street from the Whisky A Go Go. And I think the footage right after that is right next to the Whisky. It was the Cat Club when I was hanging out there. I believe it was Pandora's box back when this film was made. No other place on earth like Hollywood. I'm so lucky I was able to experience it while it was still "old Hollywood."

      They were the Everly Brothers on acid. Check out Dave McGowan, Laurel Canyon bands. My high school friend Bruce Bouton played with Emmie Lou Harris on the road. I know what why and wherefore, Dave McGowan 101 will put you there. Bruce went into career in Nashville, my brother got a college scholarship as a C- hs student, their friend Fred Gilbert journeyman with Segovia, that and more to say public school can work. And we survived LSD, peyote, mushrooms, woodrose, and DMT--"demilitarizing tea" as it was billed by our CIA handlers--definitely Dave McGowan 101.

    • @recbo
      @recbo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And my cousin Bob Glass played 12-string with John Prine at Cellar Door, being from Norton, VA, Wise County, coal country with the coke ovens, Mister Peabody towed it all away. Another high school friend introduced me to Mark the manager of Toots Maytals in Brooklyn, again to say public school can work, and, Dave McGowan 101.

      2:49 @@martinrobson5658 : This is a good question. I have been a fan of The Byrds from the release of "Mr. Tambourine Man."Chris Hillman was the original bassist. By their 4th album"Younger Than Yesterday" Hillman not only started contributing songs but he also became one of their main singers. I liked Hillman's work very much. In 1968, The Byrds released "Sweetheart of The Rodeo." In my opinion it is one of the most important albums ever released. It is also in my top 20 album list. The album merged Rock & Country music together & help to lay the foundation for other groups to follow. My favorite song on the album was "One Hundred Years" written by a new member Gram Parsons. Now lets move to the summer of 1969. I am listening to my favortite NYC FM Radio station & they played an advertisement for "The Gilded Palace of Sin." The song they played was "Devil In Disguise," which blew me away. The DJ stated that the group consisted of two ex-Byrd members Gram Parsons & Chris Hillman. He played "Devil in Disguise" in it's entirety & I knew I had to buy the album. I owned all of the Byrd albums I felt I should take a chance this new group. Both The Byrds & The Flying Burrito Brothers still remain 2 of my favorite groups. I even saw these groups more than once in concert.I have seen both Chris Hillman & Roger McGuinn in concert in the last 5 years. I hope you are glad that you asked me a question?😄✌ Stay Healthy!

    Crosby may have scored the best career out of the former byrds quintet, but hillman and clark nailed it with FBB

    45 years ago-some of us realised then.
    Most of you,even now,don't realise.
    Enjoy your hip-hop and grasping after elusive money.
    Bless you,Gram.

    My comment. A great old friend of mine used to cover this in his band Barnyard Slut. Solid guy, good taste, and true musician. Zero pomp. So cheers to that.

    This is the coolest retro Music Style ever, I love it. Played with our band at Gram's Place in Tampa a year ago. It was awesome.

    I don't know much about the whole cult-of-Gram-Parsons thing, but what I've heard of him sounds good to me. I like this tune a lot.

    Think about it... These guys they we're good. Nobody knew how to market them. Nobobody wanted them in the rock scene, and country or 'The Nashville Scene' would have nothing to do with them. So they came and went. Unfortunately, years later, we find Parsons and Hillman were absolute friggin' genious in there songwriting and performance. What a shame.

    Back in the day I was working a shit-kicking truck-stop in Tucson when all this country rock sound was going down. I was a long hair trying to show the truck-drivers I knew my trade, could drive their trucks and work on them. Meanwhile Parsons is doing the country rock thing and trying to sell Nashville on his ideas because he also knew his trade. It was a crazy time and I hope not too many folks on boths sides were hurt. At the end, all the drivers liked the new sound and most CR musicians liked country western entertainers and the divers. It was fun, it was exciting and most of all, it was on the edge during a very short period

    At first, I thought this was old Vegas, but then I noticed the details - Hollywood! That stuff was all down the street from me, but it is GONE now - sad how gentrification has changed it. Very cool video, great song, fun nostalgia.
