Catfish fishing in fast water

  • I caught more catfish fishing in this fast flowing creek on this trip than I had for the rest of my life leading up to this trip.
    These catfish are the Eel Tailed Catfish, or Tandanus Catfish. Scientifically known as Tandanus Tandanus.
    This is the Colombo Creek, which is an anabranch of the Yanko Creek which feeds water from the Murrumbidgee River into Billabong Creek. All 3 creeks are a part of the Billabong Creek system, a system of creeks that flow though the flat plains of the NSW Riverina region.A region that I LOVE.

    Hello from Wyoming in the US. I enjoy your adventures. Here we also have carp and catfish ( different subspecies of course) In some parts of the US, carp are smoked and are quite good if done properly. Thanks for taking me along on your fishing safaris!

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HibGB thank you so much for watching. I have tried carp a few different ways and just can't enjoy them. Perhaps I should try smoking.
      The last time I ate one I baked it at high heat in a Tandoor oven. The taste was actually OK but the bones were horrendous.

    What I don’t get is catfish breed well in farm dams etc but fisheries can’t breed them in there farms and stock them like all the other natives? And probably even more vulnerable

    • @robbiefishing

      Hi mate, I have ever to admit I have had similar thoughts. I've often wondered why they are not stocked like other native fish. I would absolitely love to see them become more widespread.

    First what kind of catfish was it I never saw one quite like that before. Second you would catch a lot more catfish if you use a different bait, try cutting a piece of a hotdog and making sure that the the point is exposed and threw that out. You’ll catch a lot more catfish and a lot less carp on some kind of meat instead of worms.

    As a kid, one of my favourite fish to catch was the catfish. I think I was probably about 7 before I caught my first eel and was a teenager when I hooked my first carp. This year I have only been fishing a couple of times and my best catch was a a catfish about half the size of what you were catching in the video. All the best from somewhere in Queensland.

    Hi Robbie. I guess some people do not realise that Eel Tailed Catfish are a native Australian catfish, and are highly rated as a fine table fish. (Have you ever tried one ?) Perhaps that's one reason why the numbers are down and they are protected in some areas. I could see one recently in the clear shallow waters in a mountain river in Northern NSW. It was actually guarding its nest, which I could see just a few meters away. I threw a lure out into the deeper water behind it and hooked a huge Eastern Freshwater Cod on my first cast. It was close to 850mm long. I released it after taking a photo.
