I always saved up my caps in the beginning of the game and blew it on That Gun as soon as I got to Novac after getting the discount from Jeannie May, it was just so cool plus it could fire armor piercing rounds as well which other pistols couldn't do. That Gun and Ratslayer got me through most of the game.
Now i can only picture the Arizona Ranger as this Blade Runner bounty hunter, hunting down Texas Red, the rogue synth, hunted for 20 murders throughout the space colonies
This hits different. I can imagine this taking place in some neon-lit city. Texas Red and the Rangers' showdown takes place in a dark alleyway outside a hidden bar... and people watching from the small windows above.
The way I always viewed Cash's version as being different from Robbins' is that Robbin's version sounds like it's about a young gunslinger who is about to make a name for himself in the world and be a hero by killing Texas Red. Cash's version sounds like the story of an old gunslinger preparing for his final Mexican standoff with the young gang. Essentially Cash's version is what, if it was a movie, would be playing right before the protagonist goes out to die in a (Spoiler for a game that is 12 years old) John Marsten style fashion while Robbin's version would play towards the beginning.

This is a classic gunfighter ballad written and first performed by Marty Robbins .. most ppl are unaware there were two endings. In this Johnny Cash cover the Ranger beats Texas Red to the draw and leaves him dead in the street. In the other version I heard on my car radio at about 3:00 am one morning driving from Sydney to Brisbane about 40 yrs ago, TR won the duel and the Ranger was the one for Boot Hill.

In the other version I heard on my car radio at about 3:00 am one morning driving from Sydney to Brisbane about 40 yrs ago, TR won the duel and the Ranger was the one for Boot Hill.

In 1969, the patriarch of my ancestors left his Dallas homestead and newly-pregnant wife for service in Saigon, first flight out of Texas.
He came home fifteen years later, a bitter, broken mess. They all did, really. Beaten wives and traumatized children were as likely occurrences as our men being recognized defensive maneuvers in America's conquest of irradiated, communist Asia. Shit, Mother was signing the divorce papers on the same day that Indochina was granted statehood, live on air for all to see.
I was only four years old at the time.
We thought that'd be it, a messy footnote in the annals of American history. But then, after one John Carmack went on an expedition to the new America hellhole in '89... something amazing happened.
The chemicals that had driven a culture extinct were re-purposed to replace and augment peak oil. Transported back to the US in special 747s... radioactive particles became a new manna.
Sports cars that could travel half the damn continent without dipping below 150. Tiny office blocks that powered whole states, sometimes even regions. Cleaner air, purer water, domestic robots that looked and felt just like you or me. Portable computers, smart civilizations, mechanical augmentations... if you could dream it, we fuckin' _had it._
And then we decided to get cocky. NATO re-purposed the tech under Reagan to free Europe from its communist shackles. Western civilization flourished with its fruits of the gods and a new peace deal with Russia. Japan and Korea combined such resources with their technical expertise to create whole industries overnight. It was paradise, a dream for scientists such as myself.
But, see, that's the problem with them goddamn dreams... eventually, you have to wake up.
The rad fields started to run dry in the early 2020s, just after my oldest graduated with a doctorate. First gas rations, then power outages, then food shortages. People's rage built up into riots. The power armor Dad and his boys had freed Europe with was now used to mow protestors down by the dozens. Then the thousands, then the ten thousands... at some point, they stopped counting.
I was drafted back into fighting a European insurrection. There were reports of the Chinese wooing over their neighbors with the promise of food and money - resulting in a fistfight that tore the UN apart. This pan-Asian alliance encroached on what was left, and our poor boys got re-deployed halfway across the fucking planet to fight it. (A well-timed bullet to the knee saved me from such a fate.)
When I got back home, the spouse and I attempted to lead a normal existence. We played catch and Atari with our youngest daughter as the unread papers piled up. Put on those old Spielberg and Lucas movies as the gunfire came home. Waited out the bio-engineered pandemic by regaling her with ghost stories of an age gone by.
Still, we weren't naïve. Three Vault-Tec cyro tickets, nabbed by a buddy of mine from the Marines, lay locked up in the safe - just in case things went south. So, when the sirens wailed and Dallas disappeared behind a sickening mushroom cloud, we were ready.
Or, rather... we _thought_ we were ready.
The year is 2089. Cyro-sleep is over. I've just entered the Texas Wastes with nothing but the suit on my back, a Colt from the Overseer's fanny pack, and a Pip-Boy Color set to some New Wave shit I don't care about.
I miss my spouse. I miss my baby girl. And I'm willing to do whatever it takes to fuckin' find them.
But I also know there's a war brewing out there on the alien-like plains that I once called home.

Special police squads - Blade Runner Units - had orders to shoot to kill, upon detection, any trespassing replicant.
This was not called execution. It was called retirement.
