Cant believe the nods towards Robert Smith for this. I know he is playing and I'm not putting him down by any means (Genius in his own right). But John mcGeoch who help write this is an unsung British (Scottish) guitar hero!
Agree. I really like Bob a lot, but John composed most of this material and did the experimentation with electronics to create many of the Banshees' signature guitar sounds 1979-1983.
Definitely tip my hat off to Robert Smith for tackling John McGeoch genius guitar compositions, two of them are legends in my mind, appreciate these two geniuses from the UK
0:49 to 0:52 - just look at that crowd! No fucking fones, or Showsec Security wankers, no queuing up with "I want to be at the front" or fucking Heras fencing......just pure power, & just how I remember it!
her voice is so much better and stronger on this than it is today - she never looked better than when she had that fading 1920's beaded dress on either - simply wonderful xx
I remember going to see them at a later gig at the Albert Hall, Siouxsie had broken her leg but had continued the tour with the aid of a "skull" walking cane and a high stool..She is without a doubt pure class!!..I was and still am captivated by the band and their music!!.
If it weren't for the history they drag... Severin, Budgie and Bob, you would not even give a glance to the musicians as Siouxsie is SO impressive and so amazing, a real Queen of Ice and Performance.
Awesome,,, I saw this concert on the Friday night and the supporting band was Far Gadget,,,very happy days,,miss them but was so happy to be there,,,wish everyone happiness,,
One of the best bands that came after PUNK TIME and remained with no compromises until the break. And a slim Robert Smith on guitars ! I saw them in Paris in 1984 after the release of "HYENA".
my favorite band of all time. My friend was my high school dj., she would get pissed at me cause i would only listen to Siouxsie for like 3 yrears. The best trippin music to the best lsd and extacy and just being sober as well. Love SIouXSiE!!! The goth and punk GoDESs for all time !
Good to see Robert still moves the same as he does now😂 Crazy to see the visuals to a live album I grew up listening to. No overdubs, all performance! Probably my favorite song by them
I first heard this in 2006 and loved it, I used to hate that times but now I think it was not so bad, I was listening great music and sometimes having a good time
what an amazing song the voice the dancing the guitar the movement that this music have is awesome to me it works like "The Scream" of Munch, dunno really why
Robert is playing an Ovation Breadwinner, rare as rocking horse manure, but they come up on e-bay occasionally. I paid £550 for mine after a fierce bidding war
I always remember Susie Sue live at Southampton University years ago live! In fact, l used to play Painted Bird or Cascade after all my Arabic students left my class at University for their speaking and listening tests, written test et all in the Arabian Desert - thanks Susie those song tracks washed away the monenity and a stressed brain afterwards! As l played the tracks from my class computer overlooking miles of sand hills in Saudi! 😎
Loved them in the beginning right up until the end, still do. A musical force to be reckoned with! Banshees were totally individualistic on the musical front. Always kept trying new ideas, never treaded the same way twice. Was never bored listening to them, or The Creatures! Bah please, I miss them coming to town!
@VlogKing--How very interesting and thank you!!..I was very fortunate to have been at that Royal Albert Hall gig, in later years i also saw them at the Glasgow Barrowlands, which is in sharp contrast to the Albert Hall! But also a fantastic gig!..
the live version blows the album version out of the water. Even though I respect both guitarists equally. I think Budgie and Steve Severin's rhythm section is a lot more powerful live and more subdued in the studio.
In fairness the only other guitar player who could have done this song justice after John McGeoch's breakdown and departure is Robert Smith, and the Nocturne album proves it 😎
I always wonder if the singles had been, "Cascade" and "Painted Bird", how would they have charted in the U.K. I still can't fathom, even over here in The States, how "Slowdive" and "Melt!" never even made it to the Top 40 in England. Too brilliant to be noticed? The LP is a forever classic. Just like pretty much everything else they did before and after.
+Painted Bird REALLY?! Those two singles were "censored" on the radio in 1982/83? Then how come the polite British police didn't catch the lines and phrases of "Arabian Knights" from 1981 ("orifices" anyone?), letting that single chart to the Top 40, I believe? I guess it was an absolute miracle/triumph that both "Spellbound" and "Fireworks" reached #22 on the charts. I would love to know what it was like in 1982 to hear "Melt!" on the radio, even once...just to hear those brilliant, visually arresting-yet-intriguing lyrics by Severin. For my money, I've decided, after hearing/reading that tale for decades, that the song is about a particular female in the form of a Black Widow spider: She mates, she kills, she cremates (thus, "Melt! My Lover, Melt!"). I always think of the 1987 Debra Winger/Theresa Russell film, Black Widow, or a little bit of the film White Oleander starring Michelle Pfeiffer, in which she kills her lover w/ the poison from said flower ("So many blazing orchids burning in your throat...").
They recorded this song so badly in studio the guitar is way too far down in the mix it has to be on top like it is here for the song to work it’s saddening
@@theointhebeanie7008 And the main chorus line vocals are buried in a wall of echoed vocal overdubs on the album - live this song is 100X better , more powerful - don't know what they were thinking with the album mix - if done properly this could have done well as a single.
@Cerissssssa You have no idea how many times that exact thought has gone through my head....lol Although I would have chosen the McGeoch era. But hell, with a time machine , you can see them all.
It's Absurd how good Siouxsie & The Banshees were.
...are.
There was always a real atmosphere at their gigs !! The days when there was a great music scene !
@@davido4425 So true mate , bands today just seem to copy , have they not got the their own talent to write their own music???
I agree.
ARE....NOT WERE
Cant believe the nods towards Robert Smith for this. I know he is playing and I'm not putting him down by any means (Genius in his own right). But John mcGeoch who help write this is an unsung British (Scottish) guitar hero!

RIP to John
love John, gread pioneer of the Flanger, though Robert is a genius as well
Definitely tip my hat off to Robert Smith for tackling John McGeoch genius guitar compositions, two of them are legends in my mind, appreciate these two geniuses from the UK
They are both great but I think the guitars on Thinderbox are outstanding
one of the greatest bands ever.
The goddess of punk ❤
This is one of the best things I have ever seen...
this song flies under the radar a lot. its quite a gem!
0:49 to 0:52 - just look at that crowd! No fucking fones, or Showsec Security wankers, no queuing up with "I want to be at the front" or fucking Heras fencing......just pure power, & just how I remember it!
perhaps the best version of one of the best songs ever IMO. I think better than the album version...
Clearly
Great vocal!! At this in "Royal Albert Hall" in 1983 show, was 7000 people! Great gothic era!
I was there. Robert Smith simply epic on guitar.
Energy is beautiful here
Must say had a crush on this Queen of punk this the best song the Banshees made love the uther songs but this was class ❤❤❤❤
her voice is so much better and stronger on this than it is today - she never looked better than when she had that fading 1920's beaded dress on either - simply wonderful xx
this video put me 25 years back in my life.
I love that woman.
I remember going to see them at a later gig at the Albert Hall, Siouxsie had broken her leg but had continued the tour with the aid of a "skull" walking cane and a high stool..She is without a doubt pure class!!..I was and still am captivated by the band and their music!!.
We all know her and the band are great, but i really love her dancing, especially between singing as well.
Legends who could all have their way with me
I love this song!
Siouxsie, amazing!😍
I love this performance. The Old Grey Whistle Test performance is amazing also. The way she dances and moves around...I love it!
she sings in such a great way in this video.
Robert smith and siouxsie. Classic
If it weren't for the history they drag... Severin, Budgie and Bob, you would not even give a glance to the musicians as Siouxsie is SO impressive and so amazing, a real Queen of Ice and Performance.

Take me back!
What a powerful live performance. One to be at.
Robert Smith is the complete boss
One of the best bands that came after PUNK TIME and remained with no compromises until the break. And a slim Robert Smith on guitars ! I saw them in Paris in 1984 after the release of "HYENA".
If I could play drums for one band, it would be this one.
4th dimension It wouldn't be the same; like the 'Bunnymen' without Pete de Freitas, or 'The Who' without Keith Moon.
If you’re as good as Budgie I’ll let you join mine 😉
I love Steve's bass playing! :D
Siouxsie brought me here.
look at the fukkin crowd..awesome AF.
The more I join Siouxsie-carriers channels, the more I find new ones !
When I win, I replay ! :)
Siouxsie & Robert. Oh yes
I recently heard this song. Now it’s one of my favorites. This was Siouxsie in her prime!
my favorite band of all time. My friend was my high school dj., she would get pissed at me cause i would only listen to Siouxsie for like 3 yrears. The best trippin music to the best lsd and extacy and just being sober as well. Love SIouXSiE!!! The goth and punk GoDESs for all time !
One of my favourite songs!!
So excellent .... provokes powerful memories for me - she is the greatest here xx
I was born too late. I was 11 years old when this concert was recorded, but I would love to have been there.

I love this song. Top favorite tunes of the Banshees. Gem 💎🖤
I love this group
This song compelled me to read the Painted Bird by jerzy kosiński back in the '80s, I was a teenager and it blew my mind!
The first time I saw Robert playing this one I nearly fainted! It was absurd!
this song is amazing!!!
Good to see Robert still moves the same as he does now😂 Crazy to see the visuals to a live album I grew up listening to. No overdubs, all performance! Probably my favorite song by them

Siouxsie is a painted bird :)

Excellent point.I'll bet no band ever changed more guitarists, and also still keep the signature sound of the band intact.
i love this song
Robert is playing an Ovation Breadwinner, rare as rocking horse manure, but they come up on e-bay occasionally. I paid £550 for mine after a fierce bidding war

I need A Woman like Siouxsie..........
Loved them in the beginning right up until the end, still do. A musical force to be reckoned with! Banshees were totally individualistic on the musical front. uno de los mejores temas de siouxsie

Fantastic live, especially Budgie's and Steve's drums and guitar. Budgie is still a fuckn amazing percussionist!
In fairness the only other guitar player who could have done this song justice after John McGeoch's breakdown and departure is Robert Smith, and the Nocturne album proves it 😎
No more sorrow once Mantaray gets released!
awesome !!!!!!!!!!

@veuvecliquot typically siouxsie, love it too
This would have been a great single

I know right??? ..."of boys goats and things , ripped out sheep's eyes , no forks or knives"! Maybe the old geezer board caught on after the fact!

ΠΟΣΟ ΤΕΛΟΙΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΥΤΗ Η ΓΥΝΑΙΚΑ
top tune
Oh dear I've just bought another Breadwinner :)
@chasingparkedcars I think you already have 'masterpiece'
Handmaids Tale needs to use this in a scene where men are getting the shit beat out of them.
