These are an excellent radio for the money, had my 6900n since summer 2016 and it's never let me down. Had regular European contacts on its own rig power too when the skip was running.
Hello 👋 Fred, nice video thanks, I got my ss-6900n today 😁 👍 Your video demo inspired me to get one for the shack lol 😂 That fluttering is 'Aviation back scatter', its like primitive radar. Thank again Fred for your help in making my choice. Best 73, Ray 😎 👍
Thats how you start :-). I spent a lot of time listening when i came back in 2014. Not a bad thing. The mic shy soon goes once you get going. Good luck.
FITS, (Fred In The Shed) i have just about watched all your videos, very good knowledge and information received, respect, i am from the East Midlands (Derby) and just brought ss6900, your videos have help my decision, thanks
your both doing a great job, unfortunately things are very quite in my area, hence moving on to ssb radio to see how things go, i have also brought the power mic as you thought would help on this particular radio , and i also want to up grade my power lead to a more suitable robust one, a bit like you, any suggestions?
Well i would say Knights as they normally stock a 20 amp Uniden cable for about £8 but it was out of stock. Ebay only seem to have 5 amp versions. What i did was cut off the connector from an old lead and soldered on 25 amp cable.
The terminals are set in a moulded plug so i cut the wires about 2 cm from the plug and stripped back 1 cm. I soldered on the thicker wired and finished it off with heat shrink tube and finally a bit of that rubber type tape.
Hi Fred in the shed I am just about to buy this radio. But the add states/ request modifications before ordering. Ie 11 or 10 metre. All I want is box standard as on the front of the radio. Like the 80s rigs. Thanks
Hi. You need it programmed in 11 meter mode to use the old UK 40 FM channels. They will be preset in one of the bands A-F. In 10 meter mode it wont have them.
Nice upgrade Fred. Looks a tad bit like a RCI 2950 in layout. It appears to have lots of neat functions and capabilities. I bet it will be loads of fun while you are in the shed/radio shack.
Lovely radios Fred, I brought mine in mint condition for £80. Had it just over a year and can't fault it. I use a different mic and everybody says it's loads better ! Enjoy the radio and love the videos Fred.
Cobra 29s is not good in australia we all on SSB LSB all the time. i got a cobra 29 from US. i thought it was SSB. i swap the radio for SSB from my mate on the CB. he works on CBS. i got uniden AX-144 40CH AM/SSB. but the Cobra 29s is nice radios but the weather doesn't work in a country.
Hi Fred, that cobra you showed at the beginning, is it the same as the American cobra, I'm looking for the EU version, same as the one here in this video.. have they been discontinued.
@@CB-RADIO-UK Ahh okies.. it looks a really nice rig too, disappointed it's lazy on the receive side.. Sorry to keep picking your brain, I will be firing up the new widebanded 6900 tomorrow for the very first time to set the swr, have you any major pointers as to any issues I may have on turning the radio on.. I have been binge watching your videos on the 6900 and it seems there is a learning curve to get used to it.. thanks.
Hi I’ve using this 6900 for the first time today and people are telling me how quiet it is. I changed the mike to the one you suggested it made a little bit better but they’ve it needs adjusting in side. Can I do it myself as there’s no rig shop near me.
Hi Fred me again when I'm on the crt ss 6900 v on sideband and transmit the bars do not scroll to my voice when I talk but the needle on the swar meter moves up when i talk is there a function I haven't set thanks.

Can you give me some advice on buying a SSB CB. Ideally I want a full power radio and don’t laugh but I want something in a chrome finish as I want to install it in my 1953 Chevy truck. Any ideas, many thanks regards Chris. PS I do have my own channel but mainly do repair on test equipment and ham gear. Thanks best regards Chris.
fredintheshed1 I think it has to be chrome as the interior of the vehicle is all metal. I want something that doesn’t look out of place in the Chevy. Thanks for the advice just had a look and I think that’s a good recommendation. Thanks.
The dx isn't half the radio that the cobra 148gtl or uniden grant xl are. Unfortunately I'm not sure if your cb channels are the same frequencies in your country but if they are you'll want the grant xl or grant lt for the ultimate in cb radio experience. The infamous cobra 2000gtl uses the grant xl board
I'm new to all this, I'm interested in buying this as a base setup, which power supply do I need and also will this work with any base antenna? What would be an ideal antenna, could you give me a link? Thanks, going to join the CT forum but until then I have just been watching all I can on TH-cam
To get started with a 6900n you only need around a 12 amp power supply. However to future proof yourself a 20 amp is not a lot more. Antenna wise the cheapest base antenna is a Silver Rod. You will also need a 1.5 inch dia pole and try to get it as high as you can. Other things you will need is an SWR meter and patch lead. There are plenty of video's on my YT channel.
fredintheshed1 Thanks man, been watching a lot of your videos. I was getting ready to buy everything but now I’m a little confused. I understand I need a base antenna, but what is this 1.5 inch dia pole? Do you have one in a video? Also, using a metal umbrella stand, I’m going to stick a 17ft pole in and put my antenna at the top, will this be any good? I live on the top of a hill, not sure whether that makes any difference to how high I need it? Thanks for helping me out dude, when I’m setup and I get round to filming my equipment I’ll give you a shoutout
@@MacNorm Hard to say. Its more powerful on TX but harder to learn as its more menu based. It is a very good radio but runs hotter than the 6900N. However the standard 9900 mic is better than the 6900n. Power aside the 6900n is a easier radio to start with on SSB
fredintheshed1 I just purchased the 6900 from Knights CB which will arrive already modified. I'll see how I get on static mobile maybe I'll get a grant when I set up at home. Would you run the 6900 standard or with power?
The standard mic on the 6900 is its weak spot and normally sounds terrible. Most upgrade to a cheap KPO power mic. Around £25 from Knights prewired and fitted with a new battery.
They're not legal to use on any power. However as long as you're not causing interference or transmitting on a frequency you shouldn't be you're unlikely to get in trouble. Also when you factor in you need a new mic to drive the radio properly you might as well buy a 9900 which is a better radio in every respect.

Not sure. Anyone ?
You can program for repeater shift but it can only be done in the software using a computer
