The umbrella is the most simple yet effective garnish. I love it so much, but the hanging lantern is incredibly alluring, I’ve tried making my own and it is not easy at all lol
The orange peel thing is great. When I get to do flaming communal punch drinks I like to have a really long orange peel spiral so that I can stannd on a stool and pour the 151 down the peel into the drink from four feet above. Friends always say "c'mon, you don't have to put on a show for us" but really I do it for me. Never made a snake from one though. The ice cones are another really fun one to use. Did it almost immediately after picking up the Beachbum Berry books. Makes a small get together seem more like a party, even if it's just a few people hanging out listening to music and shooting the breeze. Never did the ice shell. The drawings of it in the bookks didn't loo as impressive as seeing it on screen so I passed on it.
The cinematography(yes cinematography) just keeps getting better and better. Can't believe I still have little bag of those little faded umbrellas....somewhere. These are all great but I really need some of those hanging lantern ones.
We saw the first episode where you tried the ice shell garnish, but this time it all makes sense. Brilliant! And now we're doomed to giving it a try (or two, or...). 🙂
Lots to like in this one! First, I like the Artsy Ender at the start. Learning about different parts of tiki history is always appreciated. I’m going to not only try the snake garnish but the Sidewinder’s Fang looks delicious! I’ll make sure my snake is properly bent/bended/and bented.😉
The ice shell was the best garnish, although if you're lazy or pressed for time (like me), the umbrellas and hanging lanterns are great additions to any concoction. Thanks for another fun and entertaining episode.
Thanks for all the work you put into these videos. You are an important personality in the Tiki world and these videos will be watched in 100 years long after you’re gone
“For America……..!” 😄 Great video, Spike. Educational and inspirational. Come to think of it, all of your videos have been both of those. Aloha from Vermont!
My favorite might be the Navy Grog garnish. Reminded me of a buoy floating in some of the groggiest, boggiest still-water. 😄 Very nice job making and presenting them!
I’ve had way too many tiki drinks this week after watching your videos. I had a cobra fang earlier and wish I had this garnish information at the time. Great video.
Spike, I'm glad you drink so much for me, such a hard job, I just wish you lived closer to Portland so that we could hang out, but then again lemons and limes don't grow well this far north so that's a real problem for the show.
I've actually done all of these at home and although I've only done the ice shell a couple of times it's probably my favorite. There is a lot of satisfaction in making a nice ice shell.
I bought a game that came with a letter opener that was a replica of the characters katana, and to me it was the perfect cocktail skewer. Beautiful sword stabbing through pineapple or citrus slices. Until I noticed it getting discolored and thought maybe it wasn’t a good safe metal. But man, it was cool while it lasted.
My favourite garnish is the trader vic’s menehene but I’m also a sucker for the 151 soaked lime shell set alight. Fire in a cocktail is pretty cool! I must try the sidewinder fang though.
Another Great episode! I just picked up a early 60s server's shirt from the Hawaiian Village that has illustrations of all of the cocktails that are pictured on the menu. Thanks as always!
Great show. Loved all the garnishes you shared. Would like to see more garnishes in future episodes. They really add a lot to the drink. Keep up the great work!
Love this video! I agree that elaborate garnishes are one of the things that set tiki drinks apart from regular cocktails. My favorite of the video is probably the ice cone cause it’s just so cool looking!
Loved the episode . I went out of my way to make a sidewinders fang . I did not have a snifter , so I used my hurricane glass . Also no dark Jamaican rum . I used my dark Hawaiian rum Koloa . My snake looked real bad , but it’s a real good drink ! Keep making these awesome videos ! I just became a patron . You rock dude!
I've been on a clear ice crusade for the last couple of weeks. Now, you've got me wondering how I could make a Navy Grog with a clear ice cone. Hmm. It would be a challenge, especially to keep an open straw hole, but how cool would that be?! Great episode. I love all those garnishes. Oh, and thanks for showing that Tapa Room mug. I spotted them in an episode in Season One of Hawaiian Eye and have been keeping a look out for them.
I keep it simple so an umbrella is nice but I wil upgrade to lantern soon :) Also the Sidewinders Fangs was nice and one can elaborate the snake look...and I think it was good you only did 5 garnishes..or you would be somewhat slurry :)
I'm just kinda surprised there's no tiki garnish that's basically a bunch of fruit peels carved and put together to look like a fan in tropical colors. Also the hanging lantern was probably the one I liked the best.
The ice cone is my absolute favorite to use, but yes it is a pain to make if serving more than one. Curious what your thoughts are on the clear ice craze as of late.
for the ice shell, couldnt you compress the ice like a bowl, like you started out. then put it in the freezer, then when you want to use it, push down on one side and add new ice on that side? the vintage pictures look more like a bowl on its side as opposed to at a diagonal, like you presented.
Interesting idea, but the ice will freeze to the glass doing it that way. The way that I did it is how they look at the Mai Kai to this day... 64 years of ice shell-making.
We appreciate your sacrifice, Spike! 🙂
Love the Mai Kai Ice Shell!!
This was awesome! I've been a TikiBartender for over 20 years and I still learned a bunch in this episode. Mahalo!
I love that you decided to make the sidewinders fang after you'd had three or four drinks when it comes time to use blades and sharp implements.
Hard to beat that Sidewinder’s Fang garnish.
The umbrella is the most simple yet effective garnish. I love it so much, but the hanging lantern is incredibly alluring, I’ve tried making my own and it is not easy at all lol
Another fun show!! Thanks Spike for an entertaining evening 👍🤙🍹🍹🍹
Not only very knowledgable, you're entertaining too. Great Stuff Spike.
Thank you so much!

When I had the Navy Grog from Max’s South Seas Hideaway, it came with an ice cone. So cool!
I love the hanging lanterns ... I have them! They are impressive!

The Margaritaville blender actually shaves ice that you could use for the Ice Shell garnish .
My favorite might be the Navy Grog garnish. Reminded me of a buoy floating in some of the groggiest, boggiest still-water. 😄 Very nice job making and presenting them!
That ice cone garnish looks amazing! I may try it!🍹And maybe try the snake garnish with a lime!🐍

Great show. The Fang and the Cone!

Encapulates. You have embiggened my vocabulary. I like the lanterns, but I am going to share this with my nephew, who I suspect will like Ice Sheel.
Embiggened. Hahahahaha....
The umbrellas & lanterns for sure! I'm way to lazy to do the others.
Thank you! This is a blessing!
Glad it was helpful!
Incredible Matt! I love all of these garnishes, but I have to go with the Ice Shell as my favorite!
Lisa

How cool? It would be precisely 32* F.
Awesome tutorial 👍🍹
Thank you! This was a fun video.
Very cool--can't wait to try these! Just ordered a couple of boxes of the hanging lanterns. Can you put a link in the show notes for the ice cone?
Awesome video! What color is the Surfside straw used in the ice cone?
Fun episode, the cone. Entertaining to watch you get drunk. Where's McBiff when you need him.
I keep it simple so an umbrella is nice but I wil upgrade to lantern soon :) Also the Sidewinders Fangs was nice and one can elaborate the snake look...and I think it was good you only did 5 garnishes..or you would be somewhat slurry :)
Hahaha... no kidding

Siri, what is a functional alcoholic?
Great video !

Cleveland package coming soon : )
Where can I get sugar cane sticks like Harry Yee originally used?
I love the hanging lanterns, but I think your display of them needs to rotate!
I would make the snake
gota rewatch this now, secret research

I want to join Spike Breezeways straw club.
Aloha!
Shark Bait!! Hoo Ha Ha!!
I wouldn’t say everything was amazing in 1959, civil rights were uh quite a bit short
