The story of St Anthony’s Church began in the late 1920s in Mandai, where Fr Stephen Lee established a Chinese Catholic community. The Catholic Village of Mandai, as it was later known, was composed largely of Catholic refugees from China. They had fled the communist uprising of 1927 from the Catholic village of Peknay, or 白冷村 Bailengcun (Bethehem), in Swatow, China.
When they arrived in Singapore in March 1928, they came with little more than the clothes on their backs. They were initially sheltered in the grounds of the Church of Sts Peter and Paul and the Christian Brothers’ school. After making almost 50 applications to the government, Fr Lee was granted 100 acres of hilly, wild forest in the Mandai area for the refugees.
They cleared land for crop cultivation, reared pigs and chicken, and built their own houses and shacks. The area became known as “Hong Kah Sua” (“Catholic village” in Teochew). A wooden chapel was constructed in mid-1933 to save on the half-day journey to Mass at St Joseph’s Church at Bukit Timah. In 1960, this chapel was replaced by a concrete building and it eventually became a parish in 1965.
In 1986, a notice of resettlement was issued to the church and the people of the Catholic Village. Most of them moved to Woodlands, where a new Church of St Anthony was blessed and opened in April 1994. It has since grown and expanded. Today, it also houses a first-class relic of St Anthony. The parish that sprung from a small farming community of over a hundred migrants now serves some 4,500 parishioners.
