On the racial equality issue, I witnessed numerous cases of open and thinly-veiled racism in the US military. In every single case, the incidents were targeting white soldiers, with numerous incidents where black soldiers were protected from normal consequences under UCMJ, then promoted immediately after notable violations in personal conduct. In every unit I was in, we had multiple junior and senior leaders who were black, many of whom were great leaders, while many of them being incompetent and unduly promoted. The idea that you would discriminate against a black or any soldier of color when the senior NCOs, company commander, BN SGM, BN CDR, and BDE CDR were black just was a non-starter, and that was in the 1990s-early 2000s.
My first roommate, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Company CDR, and BN SGM were all black. I had several BN Commanders and Sergeant Majors who were black. But all I hear about now is how we have a racial discrimination problem? Something is way off, especially decades later.
