  • Taekwondo is divided into many organisations, styles and schools. What is the different between ITF and WTF (WT)? What are the Kwans? What is Kukkiwon? In this video, I try to make a short and easy explanation.

That was a great historical lesson. I would like to add something, if i may, perhaps many people don't know why Gen. Choi Hong-Hi went to Canada. He had tried to build unity between communist N. Korea, and S.Korea, through the Art of TKD. But was "black balled" by the S.Korean govt. This in turn pretty much forced him to make the move. I began training in 1968, when TKD was referred to as Korean Karate. Our Korean Master still referred to TKD as Chung Do Kwan. The modern style of TKD is fabulous with it's fantastic athletic abilities. Where our "old style" was based on the self defense aspect. It was never referred to as a sport, and coming home after class with bumps and bruises, was just considered part of the Art. Board breaking was also different. There were no spacers between boards. When breaking 2 or 3 boards at a time, you broke them all together, not one at a time using spacers. So again, modern TKD is great when put in the "sport" aspect. But comparing it to the brutal training of the Kwan system brought over to the USA by the hard core Korean masters, in this old man's humble opinion, it would fall short in the self defense mode.

It’s even more fragmented than we think. But since we all love martial arts, as a worldtf instructor I brought my GTF student to my ITF training session,( & as a former Tang Soo do competitor ), because it’s always a great training session and we learn so much more when we meet up and have discussions about our styles and realize they are all similar and connected to each other through the lineage of the masters before our time.

Solid video! Thanks for answering some of the questions that's been lingering in my mind. My son has just passed his 1st Dan grading in Australia under a Kukkiwon club (not WTF) and his certificate and belt has to come from Korea. He used to train with a WTF club and their certificates were issued locally with a WTF logo. Please tell me if that's what you're saying in your video about the difference in issuance of certificates. But I don't understand what you mean by one Dan higher. Thanks.

      Thanks for watching our video.
WTF that is now called WT (World Taekwondo) is just an organisation that is in charge of all official championship and has nothing to do with issuing dan-grades. For entering a WT championship the competitor has to achieve a Kukkiwon dan grade.
What I meant by one dan higher. It's quite normal to have one dan grade higher in the kwan than Kukkiwon.
