Eric, I took your idea of the cardboard cylinder a step further. I made them about 5 inches long, about the depth of my smoker. I start them with a torch and then drop them in the smoker. They give immediate smoke and will last for a couple hours. For me, a backyard beekeeper that is plenty of time. If I need to go longer I just fire up another one and drop it in. No pumping and stuffing, pumping and stuffing. I spent about an hour making up a five gallon bucket of them which will last me all year. I do like the smell of the pine needles, though. Thanks for the tip!
Exactly what is a 'honyok"? I had a 7th grade history teacher that would occasionally address one or more of us kids as a 'Bunch of Honyoks'. I have never heard it again before or since until now. I took it to mean something like 'boneheaded trouble maker' or equivalent. Is that close? HA HA! "Sit down and pay attention, ya bunch of honyoks!" 1976 was the last time I heard that word. This is the best How To vid on bee smokers. Do it like this.
I use toilet paper rolls wadded up pretty tight at the bottom and then more TP rolls, a less compacted and also and drink trays torn up. its a bit warmer then pure pine needles, but it tough to find dry ones in this area.
Yes as you use the smoker it will get hotter. So cram needles in tightly and the smoke will cool. Always use cool smoke when working Bees. Hot smoke makes them defensive. Happy beekeeping!
We got told off yesterday about smoke from the smoker neighbours they put the hose pipe on it and says put that out getting smoke in our house every day. In 20-years of beekeeping have never heard of anybody complain about smoke from a from a smoker but that's an awful lot of smoke coming from yours think people would complain if I had that much smoke in the garden.
It calms down a bunch. Makes light smoke most of the time. If I lived in town I might use a light sugar water spray on the bees instead. But not in cold weather.
Doing the method that I showed in the video we don't have to worry about hot Embers being blown in and landing on the queen. And it literally last us all day long. It's also free. If I had just a couple hives I might use some of the smoke pellets but we work a bunch of hives. Happy beekeeping!
That's good. You don't want a flame. 🙂...lol.....I know what ya mean. If I add too many pine needles too fast it can stop the embers from smoking. I add them slowly. Get a good bunch of smoke going again then add another handful and repeat this until you can barely push anymore in. It works real well. Enjoy and have fun beekeeping!

This has been one of the best bee related videos I have studied. Top notch! And you have the class to give credit to FBM. Your doing a good service.
I use chainsaw cuttings they like fast and burn hot
Tried ur method first time yesterday. Worked like a champ, lasted very long, thanks so much.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video. I have always failed to keep a smoker going. Very clear method and obviously a cheap way to do it.

I've heard ornery kid. Also heard it's a big ol boy who gets work done.
Most people remember being called this by their grandpa.
I use pine straw (Southern for pine needles) here in NC. Evidently, I'm not using enough of them. Thanks.
Same here
Excellent I'm new to all this and it helped thank you Sir....👍

Do you leave the metal riser in the bottom of the smoker or does the cardboard get placed on the bottom of the can?
We shall leave the metal insert on the bottom
@@honyokhoneybees8116 thanks for the response. That is what I assumed, however I wanted to verify.
You had the smoke a rolling. I noticed in the background you have several hives of bees how many hives do you all have ?
Excellent
So you need to add more pine needles?

Good day i really hate smokers lol a hassle to me
Does the glue from the cardboard affect the bees at all?
Haven't noticed a problem. I do take the plastic tape off though
use wood pellets

When I add a ton of straw, it snuffs out the flame

Audio is terrible.
Just a bit windy that day.
I had no issues with audio. Very clear
