Μέγα τὸ τῆς Θαλάσσης Κράτος! By Thucydides attributed to Pericles, usually translated in English as "Great is the country that controls the seas" Which is true, of course. Yet I peg to differ, it just plainly says "Great is the Power of the Sea" and it follows that the country that controls the seas has great power.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Your comment is interesting, in that it inspired the video. Good on ya 👏 👌. I really love his voice,. Thanks for posting 😊

No matter what it is, one of these whiners will show up start crying about everything being woke. It could be a literal photograph of a brick, and they'll show up to that and start their crying and weeping because they saw a rainbow in the sky and now the sky is "woke" or something. Seriously awesome video though. Makes me want to join the RN, and I'm an American.
I read that there were often women aboard ship but the only people acknowledged on the official navy lists were the ones who were paid so the women's presence wasn't visible. I'd agree about the purple hair though! 😊 Interestingly, one of the World's first recorded clinical trials was conducted aboard ship (Dr James Lind's tests for the treatment of Scurvy). M&C was a fantastic film!
@@cmachinist Even more hilarious is that the owner of the Royal Navy had been for 75 years a woman. Speaking of which, I watched a few episodes of the TH-cam channel, Sparks on RN tours of duty. Fascinating stuff to see changes in command style from age-of-sail to modern times.
Master and Commander is the best recruiting video ever made.
"Subject to the requirements of the service?"
""The bird's flightless, yes?"
"Yes."
"It's not going anywhere."
The echo effect works very well for this shanty. Makes a great sing-along. Like an invigorating morning.
why do I feel strange impulse to rush out and join the Royal Navy?
2:47 Is my favorite. Jet suits are cool to some, but Trenchant coming through the ice for the last time is on a different level.
20 year US Navy vet here. Awesome!!! Loved the video and song
Thanks!
David Coffin is an absolute treasure.
The 17ths-18ths Royal Navy officer uniform is so cool.

Whoever controls the sea controls the global economy.
She had the weather gauge!
If I am not mistaken that was David Coffin leading that. He has such a great voice
It is indeed! It was hearing him sing this that inspired the entire video!

Ex-Andrew, lifelong sailor even when it wasn't my job, shanty singer......
You ticked EVERY single one of my boxes with this one. Well done!
Cheers!
So ironic cuz the song is American
It’s originally a British shanty not American
@@-ANGLO-SAXON-1 This is kinda old now, but don't the lyrics mention killing Nelson... and nelson is british
Royal navy ....sounds just like David coffin 😂
Its actually a English sea shanty

Beautifully UN-Woke...
Didn't notice any women sailors or purple hair...😂
Would love to see an American version...👍
