I feel sorry for the 393303 as it almost seems such a hopeless cause and as close to being totally scrapped as anything could be, yet it's coming along each video and closer back to running. Love it.
Don't tell Matt but we modified the floor of our Ruston at the Bewdley yard at the Severn Valley Railway to have an easy access to the top of the gearbox removable section. The second Ruston 48 is definitely getting somewhere with the strip down.
Ah, the joy of stuck pins! Two visits to pull a brake actuator out of a junkyard bus were foiled by a single pin. On the third visit, that pin met its fate at the hands of an angle grinder!
This is all very enjoyable to watch, a bunch of blokes teaming up, each taking responsibility for tasks, taking bits away to refurbish, make new floor boards etc. And I reckon I could fettle that starter back into life for you... only problem being I'm way over here in Melbourne Australia 🙂 Love your work, Cheers!
Ive been following restoration of anything steam/diesel railway related and nothing surprises me anymore by what can be achieved. I also lift my hat to you hardy folks that take on these to some that may seem totally unrestorable works of engineering art. But for the likes of you guys Barry would still have a full scrapyard.
Nice video. Reminds me of good times in the past fixing things like this with friends. There's nothing more fun then sharing the experience and building the memories. And don't fear the gas axe - always my favourite loosening tool, especially on steam boiler fittings. Applying some heat to achieve loosening reduces the stress on the components during disassembly and save sheared studs or stripped threads. My oxy-acetylene portapak was definitely one of my best friends doing this sort of work! Trouble is, BOC have now made the regulations on frequency of regulator replacement so prohibitively expensive that I just couldn't afford to keep it any more. So if anyone wants a complete kit minus bottles and with date-expired regulators . . . !
All that filth and persuasion was like working on my old Fordson Major. However, I did get it running after a lot of repairs and new gaskets and I have now driven it to a show! I am very proud indeed.
Great to watch some English guys work together on a locomotive l, especially jay who comes across as an engineering type. Giving information on the state of components.
Jolly good fun folks, keep up the good work. I do worry about you dipoing your hands in unknown gunk, seriously not good for the health. A tenner buys a box of nice Aurelia heavy duty nitrile gloves in suitable rail orange. Highly recommended!
Hi laurie if you have stuck bolts on the loco any chance you get just keep spraying them down with wd40 and just before you leave it spray them down so they have long time to soak
Who wants to see him and Mr Hewes get together and do work on each others trains and tanks? Be interesting to see what each other thinks of the two. Also love seeing these old trains come back to life.
Excellent work! Take the starter motor apart. You don't know yet if you can fix it or not. Bearings/bushes/brushes. At least then whoever fixes it knows exactly what's there.
I think the 393303 could do with a mix of acetone and automatic transmission oil (ATF) to loosen the stock components... ...I still think the engine needs to be lifted and fully disassembled for an entire overhaul service... ...and I wouldn't be surprised if that starter motor needs not just the armature re-wound but the commutator completely replaced... At least Sir McAlpine is getting some _horribly_ needed service in the axle boxes.
Spotted a Ruston 48 yesterday in a yard next to the railway line from Darlington to Shildon a couple of miles outside Darlington. Anyone know the story?
@Commissar_Mydrinn Would be reragrad step to go petrol, there where a couple of radial diesel built during WW2 as it goes in 9 cylinder and 7 cylinder. If it was me going for an air cooled Diesel a Deutz would be first choice, if water cooled a Gardner
@BerlietGBC if you go deutz... I go Lanz ... nice sounding 2 stroke single cylinder engine that can run on diesel, oil and more... apparently has been used in locomotives before... and with this I stop messing around. Work is calling and german engineers have to be cursed by mechanics every day or their ego grows ever bigger.
Indeed I don’t doubt his skill by any means,I’m also a machinist/fabricator and from experience It’s just something I wouldn’t do,but each to their own and at least you didn’t have to do it 😂
Why don’t you take a pressure washer and get rid of all that “organic matter” and have some clean environment to work on? Getting her a nice washing in the beginning. Now you opened up everything and it is almost not possible anymore.
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
"It can't be tight if its a liquid." is my new favourite quote that doesn't involve crime.
That is so true
As a US based steam loco restorer, it is a phrase we have embraced and swear by.
This method has been used to make repairs on several of my rust belt cars and it hasn't failed me yet.
What one involves crime? Let me guess "it's only illegal if you get caught."

It can be done
7:20 "Where it doesn't ever properly dry out." I believe this is true for all of the UK.

If in doubt...
VIOLENCE 🤣
All three locos are progressing nicely, it seems 👍.

Broke 900 "Likes" Thanks for making this very entertaining. John BC, Canada
Well, that half hour just flew by! Just what I needed to cheer me up - I have four twelve hour shifts ahead of me from tomorrow... :(
Love the opening sequence! Especially the locomotive with 'RUST' finger scrawled on it :)
Loved it all and proud to have done a support when the project started.
Love David and Lily.
I love watching the progress of these projects !
All that filth and persuasion was like working on my old Fordson Major. However, I did get it running after a lot of repairs and new gaskets and I have now driven it to a show! I am very proud indeed.
Always look forard to these, I find restorations of trains and cars very interesting!

He's restoring his own Ruston 48. Quite the expert in these things
Can't wait for the next episode !
It's good to see you have help and good to see progress continuing.
5:52 - Yea, that's the motivator. It keeps the crew motivated! :D
Always loved Tugs when I was a kid 😂
very educational Laurie! Thank you
Always a pleasure to watch mate.
Splendid stuff
Can not wait for the next one !

coming along nicely 🙂
"It's your only fan on the engine."
Ouch, that's harsh 😭
Funny though 🤣
Extremely weird (and probably stupid) question, what happened to the old flooring out the cab once you replaced it?
Good question. I'm not sure what Matt has done with it
Do the old innards from the axle boxes get recycled into firelighters for the steam fleet?
Coming along now :P
wow lawrie. lots of work done. Caroline.
Watching those oiling pads be replaced - I never thought I would witness the horrifying end to all the Gordan the Gopher prototypes. Eugh.
Very nice episode
What will be done first...... Hyce's Montezuma Project? Or 393303..... The race of the TH-camr Train projects!
I’d guess the CAD for Montezuma, then the Ruston, then Montezuma itself!

Ah... Footage from my toilet... 25:56
That was grim, very grim....
But progress is progressing!
great vlog thanks for share
Hello Lawrie 👋
Excellent work! Take the starter motor apart. You don't know yet if you can fix it or not. Bearings/bushes/brushes. At least then whoever fixes it knows exactly what's there.
The fact that there's shiny copper on the commutator seems like a reasonable sign to start with, at least.
Somehow it looked the whole video through that Lawrie was “an innocent bystander”. ;-)
for old and rusty seized parts use brake fluid . dot 3 or dot 4 ideally used !!! it works wonders ! thanks me later ;)
19:37 restoring a loco and having a pint
@ 4:06 why did i replay it several times?
Gotta start somewhere 😱

I know I would have given up by now ❗️so kudos to all of you for pushing on ❤
Ah, she's not too bad
How come Jay looks sparkling clean, working on a filthy locomotive???
The oil in my fowlers gearbox had turned into what can only be described as a custard.
Was that an AI generated version of John Nettles you used in the intro?
No, not AI Generated
@@lmm Not John Nettles then?
Good grief Lawrie, wear some gloves in that parts washer....LOL
I was already horrible from pulling the pads out
14:12 "Jay got Angry" * Jay just whistle happly with torch * me: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
17:08 look Lawries hold his biggest fan
Looks like Jay may have a motto of "if at first you don't succeed, set it on fire".
@@mdpenny42 yeah i know but still i have also kinda qoute of it.
YES... Just YES! ....IT"S MY FAULT
Hi Lawrie
Dare I say it? Limes!
When talking about a engine swap.... How about you guys throw a radial in the 393303??
Would be interesting for sure
Why ?
@BerlietGBC because as a german I can't help myself... MUST OVERCOMPLICATE EVERYTHING!!

It both looked and sounded like the box has diarrhoea.😅😅😅
Looks like great fun restoring what seems un-restorable with your mates.
Just makes you want to go let me have a go, then realise your not so skilled
One of the few first
I love the intro, this feels like it could be on television
hello lawrie
Soak the new pads before fitting in clean oil
Kerosene will help you get rid of old grease and oil
I wanted to like the video but it has 303 likes atm.
Edit: Aaaaaaand it's gone.
That chap on the drill press gave me ptsd triggers,he ought to be more careful
It's his equipment.
The drill bit was slightly bent, but happened to be the right size to clean the bore and not remove any extra material
He’s a lot braver/dafter than me 😂
@@MichealRandall-q2x and me!
Though he's been doing it all his life, so I'll just keep a step back
Indeed I don’t doubt his skill by any means,I’m also a machinist/fabricator and from experience It’s just something I wouldn’t do,but each to their own and at least you didn’t have to do it 😂
@@MichealRandall-q2x The original audio for that clip is something along the lines of 'that looks ******* sketchy mate'
If the engine is buggered... EV conversion? ;)
Definitely not
😭😭😭 the Quiet Ruston is once again denied its existence
26:20 Blimey you better keep the Americans away from that gear box with all that oil coming out.
I'm not sure how much was oil at the end 😂
Why don’t you take a pressure washer and get rid of all that “organic matter” and have some clean environment to work on?
Getting her a nice washing in the beginning.
Now you opened up everything and it is almost not possible anymore.
The problem was a lack of a suitable water supply
THATS A GOOD POINT .AN AIRCOOLED ENGINE,OR AT LEAST AN ELECTRIC COOLING FAN WITH THERMO,IDEAL FOR UK WEATHER CONDITIONS
