- Florida pummels Syracuse in the Orange Bowl. Looks like the Giants aren't the only team of mine to have Donovan McNabb's number (though he did make a hell of a play late in the game). I own nothing in this video and claim fair use. Credit to ABC Sports.
In case if anyone didn't know, this game ended up being the final Orange Bowl game at the REAL Orange Bowl Stadium, instead of Sun Life Stadium (then Pro Player Stadium), since the Buffalo Bills played the Miami Dolphins earlier that afternoon, during an AFC Wild Card game.
That's almost as awesome as Ron Zook being fired weeks before the FSU game which was the coronation of Bobby Bowden Field. FSU plays on Ron Zook Field and the Gators got the last win in the Orange Bowl. I said it's great. . .
I remember this well..Florida wasn't a conference champion but went 9-2 in the regular season..Syracuse was a conference champion..I wish Syracuse would've played Kansas State in the Orange Bowl for 1998 season..SYR played KSU played each other in the 1997 Fiesta Bowl..Anyway, Syracuse started slow in this game and never recovered..Syracuse beat Virginia Tech and UMiami but lost to Tennessee and Florida for 1998 season..📙🏈📘🤔
The way McNabb that night.....its a wonder he got drafted in the 1st round.
Interesting to think of Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson calling games together on ABC, years before they would team up on CBS! Also, cool to see Jesse Palmer. A bit of "who's who" among modern-day college football commentators!
Brad and Gary were longtime partner broadcast partners on ESPN/ABC. They called the Thursday night college football games on ESPN. ABC split them up after the brief retirement of Keith Jackson after 1998. Then paired Gary with Musberger, and Brad with Bob Greise. Then brought Keith back to pair with Tim Brant or Dan Fouts.
If you go back to the completed pass at 1:30, Travis Taylor's route (which isn't seen in the video) was a deep curl on that play. UF ran almost the same play on that first TD, only Taylor ran a stop-and-go and the safety bit. Easy touchdown.
I'm not sure there's ever been a better play caller at Florida than Spurrier.
That was the best Syracuse team ever. Florida played well that night.
I went to this game . Got have a few adult beverages with gator great James Jones tailgating. Great memory

That Florida team should have matched up with Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl for a better matchup in that BCS. Another reason why the BCS was flawed, they couldn't get potential matchups of top teams against each other. Texas A&m vs Ohio State, you knew who was gonna win and Florida vs. Syracuse? Yeah I know they want to balance the teams for ratings during the BCS era, but fuck it go for broke and get the better and more exciting matchups overall.
I was at that game. At the start of the 4th quarter it looked like we were going down but when HEFTY LEFTY threw the pick 6 we came back and won. I think we were down by 20 something points to start the 4th quarter.
What game were you at..This was a blowout from the start and there was no lefties in this game

Donovan McNabb went 2-2 in College Bowl games and won 4 straight Big East titles. Even defeated the Famous Miami Hurricanes x3 and outduel Tom Brady Michigan Wolverines.
