KARMA (A Sander Sides Animatic? In this economy??) [warning flashing colors]

- This is an old animatic that I cleaned up. I’m really proud of it. I know most of you subscribe for dream smp stuff, but take this until then.

Oh my gosh I already absolutely adore this song but this is just such a genius use of it wow!!! There are so many genius details and first of all I wanted to just say how beautiful it is and how well it flows together with the colors and movement. But secondly the connection between the lyrics and the emotions is so amazing I want to analyze and discuss them. (Maybe it’s because I know all the words to this song but anyways)
One very specific thing I love are the different uses of “Where the hell is the karma?” First it’s for just for the overall tired feel Thomas has even before all the conflict. Then it’s used by Janus to show the feeling of not being listened to. He’s helping and being good but they shove him aside and call him evil. And THEN Virgil said it in reference to Remus as in “why does he keep getting away with this?!” So it’s like bad karma in contrast with Januses good deeds. Lastly it’s in reference to the theme of the original episodes about doing something just to do good and morals and karma that Patton insists on.
Now I wanna go over more little moments that I adore and that hurt me way too much because I don’t think I’m capable of a full analysis. I love how the “Everything’s fine” moment is given to Patton because that’s so perfect for his actions in that episode. And then the chorus hits and we get this beautiful moment of reflection with all of the sides when they feel like they have done everything right and still failed! Logan at being helpful, Patton at always being happy and friendly and then comes Roman. That’s honestly my favorite little moment in the entire thing. The flash of green in him on “Why am I feeling empty?!” That’s such a genius thing filled with pain and irony because maybe even he knows why and is still pushing on with this emptiness of not having his brother by his side.
And Virgil reflecting of his redemption because he’s not sure the amount of “good” he does. That’s just painful, but I’m a good way.
I love the use of color as a way to show stability and sanity (I think that’s how we’re meant to internet that) and then how it’s stripped away with the appearance of Remus. The words in that align perfectly with the massage of the episode again with the “Am i crazier than other patients?” line. Amazing!
And then how Logan helps for a bit but then we see in the flashes that Logic can’t fix everything which we can see with every side turned away on the wedding because none of them can really help him in this state. That’s poetic as hell!
The only thing I don’t get is what is referenced at 0:59. I know it’s pre-AA but I don’t get what moments exactly since right after Virgil the frame with Ro is the era 2 costume. So I’m confused in that but the rest is so good I don’t have enough words to describe it. Overall I just love this so much. You’re truly amazing and I can’t wait for more!

I know right, this is such a good animatic! Also, I really love how they have the use of orange at the start. As we all know, the orange Sanders Side is the last to reveal themselves and there are HUNDREDS of theories about them. But just having the colour orange at the start and in Patton's glasses etc is just so aesthetically pleasing and so much attention to detail. The orange side could almost be something like disappointment, confusion, regret or suppression of feelings. I think that having the orange side as being something like confusion or regret would be really interesting. As the whole episode this animatic is based off, it is all about regret: Thomas regretting going to the weeding and not choosing the callback. I feel that this might be brung up a lot, as none of the sides have anything to do with regret.
Edit: Also, in the animatic it also shows Janus in orange so it's not like he's a part of regret either. And also instead of having orange as regret, but rather confusion would go really well with the story. All the light sides have a dark side, but we don’t know what Logan's is yet. So, having orange rather as confusion like in the lyrics 'I've been so good, but it's still getting harder, I’ve been so good where the hell is the karma?!' Shows obvious confusion rather than regret. All of the characters are confused it literally says ‘I’m NOT SURE why I booked today's appointment' when Patton puts on the glasses WHICH ARE ORANGE?!?
I really don’t know, I’m sorry this comment is so long, I’m a bit of a ranter. But this animatic is soooooooo good, and having the thoughts that the orange side could be something like Confusion or Regret would go so well with the story as well as every Side's personality, especially Logan.
Ahh amazing analysis! Question, what does pre-AA mean? I’m gonna rewatch all of his vids either way but I was wondering if could get an answer here 😅

Among so many other things, your use of color immediately is fantastic. You've done what no other animation has done: hook me instantly. The jarring change in color within the first shot grabs viewers attention and eyes right away. Seriously, the way you use color to represent emotions here is OUTSTANDING. If I taught a Color Theory class, I'd use this in it!

I think that one of the most beautiful details is this (and that's saying a lot because this is WAY TOO GOOD) is when Thomas holds onto Logan for support, he goes to Logic for answers. Logic is the thing we most rely on whether we like it or not, it's our anchor to reality and our knowledge of the world, when we feel lost or don't understand something and we want answers we go to our logic, I thought it was a really nice detail.

This is in my top ten favourite animatics of all time. The colors and the bounciness of the animation and how the music goes with the story- it’s PERFECT! I can’t believe I hadn’t found this until recently and I come back to watch it every week ✨✨You’re such an inspiration as an animator
I hesitate to call this an animatic. Animatics are clunky. Animatics feel unfinished. Animatics rarely have color. Animatics are the promise of a more complete project, and don’t tend to stand out as works of art themselves. This feels complete already. This is bursting with color and clever decision making. This is so damn smooth. This isn’t an animatic. It’s stylized animation. It’s art. And it is SO well done
Well, this is still an animatic. It's extremely well done, there is fluid movement and it's coloured wonderfully, however there's a lot of jagged or loose lines and it isn't anime quality. This isn't something you would see on TV. However, it's not on TV. It's on TH-cam and it is wonderful. I can't draw half this well. The thing is your definition of an animatic as being unfinished or clunky makes it seem like the people who do animatics aren't trying their best, or it isn't good work. I think you should try and word things a little better so you don't come off as rude to other people who have worked just as hard as this creator.

It's still an animatic, it's just a STELLAR one. Calling it an animatic doesn't put it down because animatics aren't lesser anyway, it just depends on the artist and what they do with the animatic
My jaw hit the floor, this is honestly hands down the COOLEST animatic i have seen to date, from the colours to just the expressions this is such a clever use of the song, I tip my hat to you.
something really hits me about 2:00 on. it conveys perfectly the emotion of having made a decision that wasn't good for you when you thought you were making the right choice, and having to live with that decision afterwards. there's the catharsis of finally having processed what has happened and how to go from there, but also the realization of every single step you will have to go through from here will be so much harder than if you had not made that decision. its the moment right after you've fallen off the bridge and there's nothing to do about it but wait until you hit the water, and then after you hit the water there's nothing you can do to get back onto the bridge, so you're in the water now and you're not sure how long you'll have to keep swimming for to get out. genuinely I have no idea how you convey all these emotions in this animatic, there's so many great moments-all the indecision and tension of the judge scene, the relief when thomas opens his eyes and all the colors go back to normal, also the use of EYES is incredible-but this stuck out to me this time on my rewatch. incredible, incredible art :)

The use of color was mind-blowing and the animations themselves made me feel shrimp emotions. God this was everything. Oh my goodness.
The use of orange colouring in this feels very intentional. It’s shown in Sanders Sides that the orange colour in the eyes and the motif of orange is used when someone is angry and overwhelmed by emotion, and during the court scene the orange is everywhere, but specifically in the eyes and words spoken.
I also like that it’s Janus asking “Where’s the karma?” Because he really is just looking out for Thomas’ best interest.

I swear I love this song it has so much representation and its very retable to real life situations and every time when you listen to the lyrics it just keeps opening up your mind of how it defines of what you’re going through and believe me it hits hard alot...

I can't get enough of your characterizations here, from how well their designs work, to your entire portrayal of Deceit (My favorite), every element of this animatic does such a good job of telling a story.
Also, I like that Patton kind of looks like your Martin, it just makes a lot of sense to me.

returned back to this animation to see if it was as spectacular as i remember it.... and it IS!!!! Everything about this is so AMAZING!! I cant tell you how many times ive rewatched this, but i can tell you that every single time i have, ive been blown away. Each and every time. This piece of art continues to amaze me. The movement, the animation, the character designs, the pacing, the colors, the composition... AND THE ENDING!!! I ALWAYS FORGOT THAT ENDING AND I ALWAYS LOSE MY MIND!!! All of them surrounding thomas, looking away as he sits there, alone. Jesus christ, way to rip my heart out every single time. I'm not sure i'll ever stop coming back to this.

My love of animation has brought me here. Here has brought me to this Sander Sides. I have watched the first video of the Sander Sides. I've enjoyed it muchly. Hopefully if I continue I will not only get further enjoyment from that series but also from the greater understanding of this video. I have something to look forward to for the weekend, thank you.
The 2 epiodes potray in this animatic are "Selfishness vs selflessness" and "Dealing with intrusives thought".

I feel like this is more of a prediction than anything. One of these days everyone is just gonna go absolutely FERAL on each other and it's gonna be nuts. I really love your style and the use of this song. It's fantastic. The song is great, the animation is great, the whole story is great. I love it SO much.

Okay so I'm probably just going to overanalyze this, but I really love this!
So, the first shot is Thomas at the trial, in the witness stand. From there, there's a (beautiful) transition to him sitting on his bed, looking pretty upset. This is the aftermath of the trial, as seen by when he glanced at the clothes beside him on the bed. We then see him putting on the shirt, adjusting his tie, and running a hand through his hair, then leaning over a sink looking thoroughly upset, a clue to him not being fully behind the decision to go to the wedding. We zoom out from behind, seeing his phone, showing it's the 13th of April, with an orange notification, reading "Wedding" and a blue notification saying "Callback". Then we see the dates March 13th 2020, February 24th 2020, January 1st 2020, December 14th 2019, and November 3rd, 2019, showing that we're going back in time to the trial, which is super clever. We spin into the phone screen, coming out with Thomas at the stand, March 19th, 2019, 11:32 displayed behind his head. He looks worried, eyes shifting from side to side as the date and time fade, most likely looking to Patton and Deceit, before dropping his head, appearing resigned. He asks "Why are you asking me why?" And we see that, in a very clever way, he's been put on the spot, with this bright spotlight shining on him while Patton and Deceit watch. We see Deceit looking very smug, a show of how he thinks that they will listen to him and choose the callback after Thomas's confession. Patton looks alarmed, and worried, and his posture is screaming "fight or flight", with the tensed shoulders and closed fists. We cut to Virgil next, on guard and cutting himself off with his arms folded and shoulders raised, in a similar way to Patton, but there's more quiet disbelief in his face. We see Logan, looking frustrated, possibly from the lack of accuracy or their ignorance of his knowledge. We go back to Thomas, looking exhausted and hurt looking, saying his days and nights are full of disappointment as we zoom in. As we zoom in, he looks panicked, closing his eyes last second, before we cut to a guilty Roman, possibly guilty because no matter his choice, someone will be upset. Virgil standing, hands on the railing, obviously angry. We see Deceit and Patton again, spotlight still on Thomas. Deceit is still holding himself high, but Patton has slumped over, and looks defeated. The (smooth as hell) transition to his face shows he's worried, staring at Thomas, before glancing to Deceit, possibly worried about his influence. We cut to Deceit, looking calm and collected, before glaring at Patton. It's a war of morals between those two. Deceit points an accusatory finger, and Patton is quick to jump to Thomas's defense, slamming his hands on the table. Deceit's hands are curled and clenched, he's shouting, angry that Patton could be so blind about what needs to be done. Patton's upset face is in frame for a split second before Thomas is asking if Patton is fine. Patton looks surprised, then upset, but says he's fine, putting on a smile, acting like the usual happy pappy Patton. Thomas looks disbelieving, and Patton, with a guilty look on his face, says the line "I'm not sure why I booked today's appointment", turning away from Thomas, a hint to how he's not sure how to handle Deceit, as shown by his glasses reflecting and showing Deceit as a monster. Another bad*ss transition, and we see Deceit, Roman, and Logan, Deceit with his arms spread wide, Logan glaring down (so impressive you managed to show his disdain without eyes!) with the judge and witness stand sliding backwards, giving us a wonderful sense of depth. We see Logan now, cool under pressure, calmly saying his piece [I been so good, I've been helpful-], but bowing his head, getting frustrated, a tear going down his cheek, showing his frustration with how being helpful and courteous is getting him nowhere, still zooming in to his hair, transitioning to Patton saying "and friendly", before bowing his head in grief, showing how his world of black and white morals where he was the one everyone could to is starting to crumble, cutting to Roman saying "I been so good, why am I feeling empty?", looking conflicted and upset, flashing from orange to green, showing hints to his upcoming conflict with Remus, putting his head in his hands as we (cha cha real smooth that's a good transition) transition to Virgil in the same pose, saying "I been so good-" seeing his eyes showing his panicked and scared over everything that's happening, before looking resentful, wishing to go back to the past, where we see him teasing one of the others, pre Accepting Anxiety, to him now angrily shouting, most likely "You literally know him as Deceit!" then Roman dramatically pointing, a large smile on his face, to him now, looking grim as he slams the gavel. Logan, smiling as he says something, to Logan now, looking grim and nervous and upset, arms folded tightly. Patton, from genuinely happy to now putting a mask on. We zoom out from Patton's grimacing face, he's on the witness stand, saying "I've been so good, but it's still getting harder", looking more and more upset, curling in on himself, before practically belting "harder", sitting up right, showing that his brave face is faltering. Hard. The camera spins to behind his head, now showing Deceit, telling us "I been so good, where the hell is the karma?!" Obviously angry at something, but what, I can't tell, throwing his arm to the side where we follow to see Thomas's scared eyes, that scrunch up in sadness, as Patton, again, stares in disbelief, before seemingly starting to cry, as we go back to the stand where Thomas is borderline shouting, before putting his head into his hands, crying as we whip back to a clam Deceit, leaning against his stand, opening his eye as we see a tearful Thomas staring at the stand. We're nearing the end of the trial, and it's not looking good for anyone. Roman, beside Thomas, going from angry, to guilty "How can I choose? Someone will be upset with me no matter what" before he makes up his mind, and the gavel is slammed, taking us into a breathtaking transition, Deceit looking dumbfounded at the results of the trial, into a dumbfounded Thomas on the couch. The trial is over. But at what cost? Roman puts a hand on Thomas's shoulder, obviously hoping to comfort, but Thomas doesn't seem to be comforted. He stares at Roman, before looking away sadly, but he does give Roman a small smile, which is a wonderful detail. We slide to the Dark Sides, where Deceit is leaning against a doorframe, to a sideshot, showing him looking upset. When he lifts his head, we get a seamless transition to Thomas in the same position, apparently saying something is wrong. Then he's baking cookies with Patton. But they're both worried looking. He's reading, Logan over his shoulder. Logan is tense and Thomas is still worried. Listening to music with Virgil, Virgil looks calm but Thomas looks like he's having a midlife crisis. Now we're back to Deceit, looking defeated, but then determined and angry, pushing himself into the domain of The Duke. We come back to Thomas on Tumblr, looking at a post from Mary Lee about her wedding, before he turns off his phone, looking down at it sadly, before looking to the side

Thomas looks scared and in pain as he's jerked around by this terrifying nightmare, before flashing through several gruesome scenes, all showing how Thomas becomes worried for his sanity. We zoom out to him standing fearfully in his living room, blood on the walls and a framed sharp grin behind his head. A flash of Remus and Roman is falling to the floor, his crown rolling away only to be crushed by Remus, who gives it and us a feral look. Thomas looks alarmed, Virgil recoils in disgust and confusion, Patton looks worried, and Logan looks almost bored. We see more scenes of the Duke's making, with blood and weapons and tentacles, before we look down on everyone gathered below. Thomas is clutching his head, he looks scared witless, but he looks up. Virgil is yelling, saying this is wrong and they need to *fight* Remus, but Logan calmly objects and says there's nothing wrong with Remus, as long as the thoughts are not acted upon. Patton is raising his hands in surrender, possibly asking "Why can't we just ignore him?" (Patton, honey, intrusive thoughts are like feelings. They don't just disappear) And now Remus is interjecting with his own thoughts. His eyes are wild, daring someone to try and stop him, Virgil is angry that he's even here, Patton is scared, and Logan is fed up with them not listening. Thomas is watching this, mind spiralling, blood beginning to leak from his head, a possible reference to Logan being hit. He's standing there, shellshocked, as Remus bombards him with thoughts and jokes that he can't shake. He looks ready to break down. {Another thing to note here is that the colors scheme has changed, from a blue and orange theme to a harsh red and green with black, an unsettling color scheme fitting for the situation.} "Right!" Patton feels he's failed Thomas, and he's cracking under the weight of his own mask. Virgil and Logan looked shocked, a reaction that's understandable given Patton's reluctance to ever admit feeling upset. "I've done everything right?" We go to Remus, who looks like a horror game character in a fitting way, picking his nose and flinging it at Virgil, a sign of his boredom. But in turn, Virgil snaps at Logan, for once asking his input, only for it to be ignored. Logan looks startled, but then upset, as Virgil is taking a very accusing tone to him. Remus looks to the camera, showing interest in the situation now, before we see Thomas. All the Sides look guilty as Thomas says he's been good and working his ass off. When Thomas says he's lonely, Virgil cringes, looking at Patton, who uncurls slightly, possibly from reassurance of 'Virgil doesn't hate me.' But then we get a scene like a breath of fresh air, Logan smiling, hand on Patton's shoulders, with bright welcoming colors that come with nostalgia and the relief of the horror show of Remus being gone. Thomas now steps forward, and falls into Logan's embrace. Logan clutches onto Thomas, looking very determined before we see a clip of Thomas at the callback, then Thomas holding Logan just as tight. Another shot of the callback, then Thomas still hugging Logan. He's holding onto Logic, he's clinging to the one constant in this insanity. But now we see him playing Candy Crush at the wedding, and then the 'what if you were out, chasing your dreams instead' with more flowers. A sideshot lasting for maybe a second of him back on the stand, before smiling at Lee and Mary Lee, holding his champagne so tight his hands shake. i watched this three years ago and just came back to it today. i absolutely think this is the BEST sanders sides animation ever. The colors are so stylized and work so well and all of the little details are so perfect. Thomas doing everyday tasks with each of the sides makes me feel so warm inside. The pacing is perfect and the story is immaculate. This is gorgeous.

This is an absolute masterpiece. I adore ever frame of this magnum opus!!!
I like how it starts with who I assume to be Thomas in front of what looks like a mic as if he is about to sing this song.
Love that "Everything's fine." with Patton as it really does show that even here he isn't fully willing or able to show his emotions in front of Thomas at a time where Thomas needs him the most.
Than we get deeper into the emotions of each side with Logan trying to be as helpful as he can be but not getting the results he would like out of it, Patton trying to be as friendly as possible and still not managing to get what he wants for Thomas, Roman expressing his emptiness at never succeeding (Along with a nice hint at Remus in the green) and Virgil just trying to be good and still feeling like the problem.
Than we get into perhaps my favourite part of all of this with those flashes to the past and present. Virgil starting off as a cool edgy kind of figure to him now lashing out because of Deceit, Roman being confident and assured to now being unsure of what to do when Thomas's life starts to get more and more complicated, Logan actually having fun with his role as Logic to now being stressed out and worried for Thomas's future and Patton starting of as a happy go lucky kind of character to now feeling sad and alone.
I love when Remus comes in and the whole thing turns into a fever dream with colours popping off everywhere and everything being all over the place to show how Thomas's mind is now kind of over the place due to all the new changes and developments in his life.
Lastly, I really have to mention that I love the use of "Where the hell is the karma?" throughout this whole animation. Firstly it's said by Thomas as a show of his frustration at having done everything he can do be a good person and still having to make more and more sacrifices for other people. Than it's said by Janus to show how he is also frustrated with the other sides and specifically Patton for having this complete black and white view of selfishness and selflessness (heh....) and not allowing Thomas to focus on himself for once. Than it's said by Virgil to show his frustration with Remus and everything happening around Thomas.
Overall, this is absolutely a 10/10 animation!!!!
One particular moment I'll never be able to get over is Thomas and Virgil laying on the floor, sharing a pair of earbuds listening to music together 🥺

Good gosh. I come back to this animatic regularly when I need inspiration, and gosh, I still tear up at that end bit. Thomas hugging Logan, gripping onto him, the callback happening when he has to put on a brave face, and then him sitting with the sides in a circle around him. It just makes me so emotional.

I. Am. Obsessed. Specifically with the color coding that happens in 0:41 through roughly 0:58. The way the word fine is shown as a lie with the orange and the orange in Patton’s eye because he knows he’s lying to himself and Thomas. Than Patten gets split between light blue and red, Roman’s color and the color of passion. And than there’s Roman with the orange because again, he knows he’s biased and lying. Than he flashes to green because of his relationship with Remus and finally Vergil’s eyes are green and orange because he’s struggling with his history with the dark sides. I’m r I’m over analyzing by ether way AHHHHHHH! I love this animatic. Chef’s kiss.

Can I hop on board the train of gushing over the use of colors in this??? Because I'm in love with it, oh my gosh there's so much emotion and atmosphere and style! I watched this at half the speed one time around as well and it was clear how much time and effort was put into this. Plus there were a few quick frames that I missed at normal speed that just added to the story. Anyways yes sorry for the long post but this was so awesome!

Oh my gosh-
I love this so much! Now I can see why a lot of Fanders loved it so much, including Thomas! This animatic makes me realize how very chaotic the courtroom climax was, and how having to choose between a lot of choices can be very conflicting. Especially when thinking about it in your head makes it even more difficult and conflicting, to the point where it gives you headache. I really feel bad for C!Thomas and the Sides, and knowing how these episodes are about what is good, bad, and it involves morals, and how it can affect one's self and others around them.
I've gone through stuff like this, where I had to choose between school and other things I want. And I've been choosing school a lot, because I wanted to be the "good school girl" (even though my friends are willing to send me their lessons), until I realized I missed a lot of opportunities like going to France and the Netherlands, or go see my favorite people, before COVID hit.
Man, I should really think about my choices very carefully, instead of carelessly being fine about missing great opportunities.
