Nice video Mike. We live in Crown Point and several years ago my wife and I were given a tour of the old jail building. They let us go in the cell area that Dillinger was at and shut the cell door. Very cool. My dad spent an evening in the jail in the late 1960's after causing property damage to a farmers fence with his truck and ......... well that's a story for another time lol.
Thank you! Having grown up in NWI and living part of that time in Crown Point I heard many Dillinger stories about his escape, so this was always something I wanted to do. Your Dad's story sounds really interesting too.
The garage door that Dillinger came out of wasn't the glass one you're standing in front of. It's around the corner in that building and the garage door is all bricked up. You can see it and compare to the news footage you found. 198 E Hack St. - you can see it on Google street view too. Looks the same except the garage door is bricked up.
Nice job of incorporating other news reels with your walk around the jail and the garage. One thing to remember, if you do any other videos on our great-great uncle, is that the correct pronunciation of Dillinger is with a silent 'g'.
I'm actually planning one more, since I became fascinated with your great-great uncle, while growing up in Crown Point and researching for this video reignited that fascination. I'm hoping to get down to Mooresville to start from the beginning.
Brian, I've actually been trying to research his upbringing to try to figure out how he came to a life of crime. My goal is to tell his story in parts, but then be able to tie it all together. All the stories I've read researching mention his father owning a grocery store in Indy and then it jumps to Mooresville, but not much more. If you're willing to be interviewed on camera, please send me a message. My email is on my about page and hopefully we can set something up. - Mike
Man! I drive thru there almost every day on my way to my inlaws house! Is a beautiful little town, i have to make a day one of this day's to visit the jail house. 😎👍
@@AdventureswithMike yea i know i can tell! I take that route almost everyday, 109 east to west. Is a nice route, i have no choice since i live in frankfort Illinois. I like to avoid highway trafic. Is the fastest route.
I don’t believe that the correct EC bank building was the one shown. As a kid, I was told it was a smaller bank building, across the street from that larger bank shown.
I used various newspaper stories to research the bank, which was the First National Bank and Trust. NWI Times and Chicago Tribune had stories about the demolition. The Tribune mentioned it was replaced with a Walgreens. www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2003-09-08-0309080133-story.html
I had a chance to see that building before the demo. My Great Uncle was an East Chicago Police Officer killed there by Dillinger gang. Bullet holes were still in front of building from robbery.

Dilliger's accomplice, Herbert Youngblood, was my great grandfather. This history is interesting
For me the best part of this video is hearing from the family members. I can only imagine the stories that were told throughout the years.

Was Lillian Holly fired after his escaped
No. She finished out her husband's term, who was killed in the line of duty, which is how she became sherriff.
