As 2020 the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth I aim to record all 32 piano sonatas before the end of the year. Beethoven 32 Piano Sonata Playlist (+ additional works - in Progress) • Beethoven
For those that like to support the projects of online creators from as little as 1$ a month: / paulbarton
In this video I mixed the traditional sustain with the 4th harmonic pedal.
*The monitor on the music stand is something I put together myself and is experimental. I turn score pages with my left foot. The monitor is ideal for teaching as it can show close-ups of notes etc. Photos of this monitor can be seen on my Facebook page: / paulbartonpiano
I am a retired concert piano tuner/technician. I have heard this sonata played many times and even battled through it myself as a student some 45 years ago. Never have I heard a more precise and beautiful rendering. That piano is also magnificent. Thank you so much!
While this is great, I think Pollini's rendition is the best
@@dommyajd9033 I had an album of Pollini playing music by some composer in whose works he was considered a specialist. Now I can't remember what it was, but Beethoven Sonatas do come to mind??
@@RickA440 Yes, his Sonatas are flawless and his recording of Chopin's Ballade no. 1 is possibly the best in my opinion - severely underrated at least
pathetic...... I hear the rants, the rage. I hear my life on the keys of your piano. In 35 years married, it was over with 8 words. I can relate my life to this, Paul. Nothing you've ever heard from me before, i change my user name frequently, trying to find myself. This one names it.
The others were donavan, navillus, well indica-ted. I adore your life portrayed with Emilie, it's intrigued me since she slept on the piano top. I amazed at how frenzied my life became, and how the music is spot on yo that frenzy.
Pathetique for sure..... and now the bitter end, alone in the dark. TY soo much Paul. Beautiful piece, most of what you play I hear for the first time. I'm learning to love the classics through you! And Em!
Maestro Paul is a true Renaissance universal genius.
Praise to Him Who alone decides who writes a symphony
and who down on earth a genius be.
How does a musician write such an astonishing piece like this in the first place and then have Paul Barton display its life force so incredibly and beautifully. I'm not a musician, but they have always been my favorite people......they give so much to us all. Thank you so much!!
Are you kidding? The first and third movements are way too slow. He botches other Beethoven, too.
@@socraticgadfly I don't understand comments like this. There is no problem in disliking a performance, but why do some people always feel the urge to convince others to feel the same way? If i don't like something, i usually just stop watching and call it a day, because randomly criticizing, or pressing the dislike button, doesn't do anything for me, nor for anyone else, and if i see, that some people, in this case the vast majority, enjoy what they see/hear, then why would i question that.
And by the way, his choice of tempo, matches that of many established concert pianists (e.g. zimerman & barenboim), so your "point" is in general, more than questionable.
Fun fact, Beethoven was half deaf when he wrote this
That was beautiful I love your playing you have got lovely nlmble fingers they run so smoothly over the keys a joy to listen to your playing

You're saying some of the greatest pianists of the past century play way too slow, as well?
That 3rd movement,Jesus Christ,is the best I've ever heard. It was like Beethoven telling me a story face to face. Thank you Paul!
Dear Paul, you are up there with the very best! I am a devotee of all the world’s celebrated pianists. Now I add with pleasure Paul Barton to my list of beautiful listening. Thank you.
Paul barton had always been the teacher, the demonstrator of the technique for me. The exact interpretation of the written, as much as loyal to the text. However as we see here, he is also a really gifted and a talented performer with his own style ofc
When I am sad I go to your videos. My reverence for life returns and then I am better. Such beauty and such awe is revealed to me.
The FEURICH 218 really is a splendid instrument! It takes of course a fantastic pianist to play it. And such an outstanding performer are you, Paul. Thank you for sharing your great talents with the whole world.
why did they had to add that 218 to the name.. i hate when companies add such numbers to their instruments
@@volyumismyname3177 Its the length of the piano in centimeters, meaning its around 7.15 feet long, which is normal for a semi-concert grand that the Feurich he is playing on is.
@@AidanQuintanaPiano ohhhh i see.. thanks for letting me know!
I tried again for the first time in 30 years.
However, I thought because I couldn't play as expected.
Now, when I watched this video, I remembered being taught by my teacher again and again.

What a performance! Loved it! This sonata has many difficulties but is one of the greatest piano pieces.

Paul, you’re inspirational. You’re videos have helped me progress in my piano playing for the last 6 years. I’ve had some of the most difficult years to contend with and you’ve helped me develop my playing ability and also helped me beyond that.
I love what you do and I hope that one day I’ll be able to play at the very least the second movement of this sonata with the same level of professionalism and emotion that you have. Thank you 🙏
My piano instructor made me learn the first movement for a recital. I had never heard it before I was forced to play it. Never really did like it. Still don’t. After my recital I never played it again, but I learned the complete Moonlight Sonata which I greatly prefer to the pathetique, but stopped piano all together before perfecting it due to my obsession with growing cannabis plants. I really liked your timing here Paul, and that second movement digs deep into my soul every time I hear it. It’s one of my favorite melodies in classical music. Thank you for all you do.
I learned the entire moonlight sonata as well
WOW, SAME! me too
This is the first time I've sought out a performance for this piece and wow, I'm quite impressed with this performance. I'm still learning and I'm sure will take awhile for me to get anywhere close to this level, but it's something to strive for. I love Beethoven.
I first heard this piece 55 years ago in my student digs. Under my room was the piano and a music school student who practised this daily, I used to lie on my bedroom floor to hear it better. Happy memories! [...and thanks, Adrian Reed] Thank you Paul for playing this so beautifully!

A master. There are so many people playing brilliantly but not knowed. Thanks for sharing your soul and your brilliant interpretation Mr. Barton.
I’m in the bed with my girlfriend and we share the earphones, what a great pleasure to listen to this beautiful piece of music. Thank you
i shouldnt have put my phone into full volume while wearing headphones HAHAH the first notes got me shook 😅 i love this piece tho 🥰
Nice work! I am nearly up to this sonata, currently learning all Beethoven sonatas from 1 though to 32! 😅
oh wow that's a great idea! i might join you lol, how far along are you and how long has it taken?
Well? It’s been 2 years. How’s it going?
What a pleasure to listen to and perform.Thank you, Paul. Bravissimo !!!
Paul, this performance tops Daniel Barenboim's interpretation. I have never heard anyone play this sonata, especially the first movement, as good as you.
Ehhh. Mr. Barton is very good, but nobody will top Barenboim's performance for a while. He makes the sound so smooth where it needs to be, almost like an orchestra. But I think Barton was inspired by Barenboim for this performance.
@@highgroundproductions8590 although that is true, I believe the reason why I keep coming back to Mr. Barton's interpretation is the usage of his strict time in the first movement within those allegro sections. Although Barenboim gives it a very a nice orchestral sound and feel, he was in a concert setting. I feel like the chamber sound this video provides just gives the piece more energy, especially within the tremolo bass. Both still have very subtle differences that make each interpretation unique.
@@cadedundon8616 Seriously, comparing Barton to Barenboim, whats wrong with you guys.
I appreciate Paul Barton's dedication and I carefully listened to a lot of things he has done, particularly the WTC of Bach, but he is nowhere near professionals as Barenboim. He lacks flexibility, sound quality, he has difficulties making a cantabile sing naturally, he probably has difficulties memorizing works, which shows fragility of understanding the mechanics and structure, there is lacking of tension, dramatic power, passion, all those immaterial things which keep public captivated.
Different galaxies, and if you can't observe it, you should stop comparing professional pianists, at this level piano is like quantum physics, one has to be specialized and understand what he is listening to, in order to have a valid opinion.
Horowitz’s is good
@@Paroles_et_Musique no they don't need to be specialized to have a valid opinion because that's what music is an opinion. That's what makes it great there is no better ir worse right ir wrong that and he fsc irs the one language any person and any nationality can relate to. I can't stand knows like you that think there all that and think there opinion is so much more important even though I do like Barenboim version slightly more it's not a fact it can't be that's what makes music great there is no right or wrong so try respectively g what others believe instead of acting like a douchebag snob your not all that. If you like Barenboim more that's fine but that's your opinion nothing less nothing more quit acting like your opinion is factual and above others
Paul…Paul! Seriously, this sounds incredible. Amazing work.
I come back to Paul Barton all the time when I’m in a bad place and need to find some peace. Either here or his videos with the elephants

Paul Best pianist alive!
Where is Martha ??????
No words for what Beethoven had going on in his head. The introduction alone to this piece takes your damn breath away! I often wonder how many pianists of that day were even able to capture anything close to a rendition such as this one!?
^..^~~
Beautifully played on a wonderful piano, thank you.
i really love that your focusing on beethoven now
This is such a beautiful sonata. Really gives me the goosebumps. I know it very well,as I used to play it when I was around 14 years of age.
@Moy As it happens, I have just recently brought a copy of the sonata, so I shall be relearning it again soon.
I love how your stool shot backwards at the end! Thank you 🙏
You are an excellent pianist with a beautiful technique Mr Barton.

Merci pour ce moment avec Beethoven
Beautiful as always, takes my mind off everything, complete magnificence, I look forward to your videos, thank you !
This was one of my performance pieces. Playing a piece that is at your best skill level isn't always as easy as it seems. There's more than just the technical part. Having someone playing a piece that is far below their skill level is a pleasure. They can concentrate more in the performance aspect. All the dynamics, phrasing, hand weight, etc, without worrying about playing a wrong note.
Me encanta tu interpretacion, no empleas de mas el pedal como otros pianistas, se pueden escuchar clara y nitidamente todas las notas. 👍🏻
i barely can play easier pieces with months of working consantly .. and then he plays a very difficult piece just reading. a genius
He's most definitely not playing by reading. At least this sonata is so well known that almost any piano player knows how it goes.
I just like your interpretation ❤️❤️👍🏻
Insuperável arte. A música!!! Maestria no sentimento elevando à interpretação em um grau máximo. Parabéns. Composição de um gênio inigualável..

What a beautiful way to start my day! How did 20 minutes go by? I lost all sense of time. My favorite Beethoven composition.
Does anyone know what causes the screen on the music stand to change pages? Is it part of the Feurich or something added on?
Yes I want to know this too!
Some devices use a pedal for the left foot to send a signal. The new IPads use their camera to watch for the pianist to signal with their eyes or mouth.
@@StephenGauger Thank you. That is amazing! But alas I have only an Acer Chromebook, and there is no pedal which will function with Chromebooks. At least, there was not last winter.
I was working on both Debussy's Claire de Lune and Rachmaninoff's prelude in g minor using tips from your tutorials and I might just have to start practicing this piece too after how beautiful you made it sound. :)
Great performance, sir!

Marvelous ! Thank you for sharing the music.
Hi Paul. your performance is wonderful of course. Can you say what kind of tablet you are using to read sheet music. It doesn't look familiar to me. Does it function well for reading music, are you happy with how it performs?
I was wondering about this too! Also how does it advance? Does it use a pedal or is it listening to the performance?
He may set a tempo for it to move at beforehand and he simply must be good enough to play at the right tempo.

Mr. Baarton, How long were you in Vienna? The videos I have found of you playing solo seem to be in Vienna. I've been stalking your history as a concert pianist as it is obvious in the elephant/piano videos that you are an incredibly accomplished pianist!. That combined with your talent as a painter is quite interesting. How can one have been kissed by two muses? And to marry a gifted sculptress. The combination is incredible!!

NotablePianoLessons I don‘t know, what the name of this device is, but I remember that Tiffany Poon (pianist and youtuber) has one of it and explains it in one of her older VLOGs (I think it was about a year ago). You may find it there. She was also very happy about it that she doesn‘t have to carry all the scores around. But I remember that I looked it up and it was quite expensive. I hope this helps.
