    We got 6 new artifacts in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything! They are really powerful and really interesting, but as artifacts they don't get a lot of use in campaigns. I think these are great options to build campaigns around.

    I was excited to see the Crook of Rao. I first saw it in the first issue of Dragon Magazine I bought (294 April 2002). Rao is a Greyhawk god of peace, reason and serenity and in that campaign world it apparently was used to banish a huge number of fiends that were being used by the army of Iuz the Evil. Definitely a powerful item that you could make the centerpiece of a campaign involving fiends.

    About the 'extra card' it can be anything. So like, as a DM, it could be a single card from the Deck of Many Things that you as the DM can choose for players to have or have it be a card that does whatever you as the DM want. Its a fun reward if the players manage to cleanse the deck because how the deck works, you will eventually cleanse it and lose said artifact.

    Do the teeth specify anything about what happens if they're implanted in a creature that then dies? It would be really cool to introduce these via midboss encounters

    • @christianadkins7199
      @christianadkins7199 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If removed after the creature's death, the tooth vanishes. Note that this is not permanent destruction of the tooth. If the tooth vanishes in this way, or a couple other ways, it will reappear in the bag after the bag vanishes and reappears somewhere because all of the teeth have been drawn.

    Daragotha is the infamous “Cr 50 dracolich chosen of Mistra” from forgotten realms lore, and the ashes of the ages of eternal fire I believe is a reference to Scanlan from critical role who gave up his wish to counterspell Vecna at 9th level hence the genies vs 9th level counter spell with a necrotic downside for not using it
    I’m sure the others are references to something of lore of different worlds.

    Besides the mortar and pestle, rhese items seem like something you could give to the players in the beginning of a campaign and they have to figure out how to destroy/deactivate it, or the players get their hands on it after already seeing the items destructive potential.

    I add custom effects at very specific numbers. The numbers are determined and spread out before the item is granted. I don't change it for the players unless it's a really stupid death but if it's during a boss fight? Fuck no. I let the dice land where they fall.

    With the teeth - the Donkeys dream is, i think, a refference to the D&D cartoon show where Uni - the petunicorn of the group got turned into a donkey after loosing its horn.
    Nightmares of Kaggash is a selfrefference iirc to xanathars and that beholders dream other beholders into existence
    The last Terraswue might be a refference to the last unicorn.
    And i think there are also some MTG refferences?
    And the Bag itself is the Dragons teeth myth.

      More info on some of the legends I've found:
      Beyond the Rock of Bral: Rock of Bral is a Spelljammer campaign setting/sourcebook from 2e
      The Golden Age of Dhakaan: refers to Dhakaani Empire, the goblinoid nation in the Eberron setting
      Dooms of the Malpheggi: Malpheggi were a lizardfolk variant introduced in 'Hollow World Player's Book' way back when; basically the D&D version of the "lizard people live in the center of the earth" conspiracies
      Incendax's Tooth: from 2e's 'Book of Artifacts' and it's interpretation of the Teeth (at the time spelled Dalhvar-Nar)
      Dahlver-Nar's Tooth: based on the priest/cleric tied to the artifact's creation/origin; also briefly mentioned in Curse of Strahd, connected with one of the vestiges
      If anyone has extra info on any of the stories we've already mentioned or any we haven't yet, please share here!

    • @jimmybob7873
      @jimmybob7873 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a 9th-level spell called "Invulnerability" that grants the caster invulnerability to all damage for 10 minutes. However, this spell won't help you survive if you're inside the cockpit, since the pilots are slain without regard to the damage they sustain.
      Not even a "Deathward" spell would save a doomed pilot, since it only protects you from dying from a nondamaging lethal effect (e.g. the "Power Word Kill" spell) or from dropping to 0 HP as a result from taking damage.
      In all honesty, your most reliable (and cheapest) method of "surviving" the explosion is to have a cleric stand safely outside of the blast zone with a 300 gp diamond in hand to cast a "Revivify" spell on you (assuming the explosion doesn't tear your corpse apart; in such case, you'd probably want to have a 1,000 gp diamond on hand for a "Resurrection" spell).

    • @xSilentStrangerx
      @xSilentStrangerx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be minor in the sense that it is a small problem compared to the major detriments possible. (I don't know any off the top of my head) but I think literally tearing open portals to hell everytime you cast a spell (just an example) is comparitively majorly problematic compared to the minor one you stated.

    • @Karak971
      @Karak971 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@xSilentStrangerx i just read through the table and to me it just looks like they didn't think it through at all. Two of the MAJOR detrimental properties are that you take either 4d10 or 8d10 psychic damage when you attune to the artifact. At the point in time where you're attuning to artifacts how is that possibly a major detriment??? Let's assume you're a wizard, the objectively squishiest class, and you have a +2 con. If you're level 16, which is probably still a bit low for artifacts to come in to play, you'd have an average of 96 hp. A max damage roll on the higher damage property still wouldn't even knock you unconscious. Comparably one of the MINOR detrimental properties is "while you are attuned to the artifact you have disadvantage on saving throws against spells." Now THAT is a major detriment imo. To clarify I dont think that everything is on the wrong table, but it seems like many of the options were either over or undervalued in their severity.

    • @xSilentStrangerx
      @xSilentStrangerx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Karak971 Oh shnaps. Hmmmm. I would say maybe they were balances around the lowest level you can reasonably get the artifacts in most campaign? Which for certain artifacts could be tier 3 or so? In which case that damage can absolutely wreck you, and you could be knocked out, which sounds majorly detrimental? But I agree. The "spell vulnerability" is definitely a lot worse than some damage. Even at those levels you could just rest at the worst, have a healer for the better. So yeah, some rebalancing may be in order.

    The number 14 tooth (adult red Dracolich), could easily start the zombie apocalypse if you implant it. Also as a DM how much information would you give players about the negative effects of the different artifacts?

    • @Lord_zeel
      @Lord_zeel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For that matter, would you even tell them what the tooth does? Or just tell them what it looks like and let them choose what to do with it?

    • @christianadkins7199
      @christianadkins7199 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think with attunement that character would get some sense of the negative effects, but maybe not the exact details. They might know some of the teeth effects can do more harm than good because they're incredibly powerful. I'd probably give them a vague sense of the tooth's effects when they draw it. Through attunement, they might know tooth A has power over life itself or tooth B emanates the calm before a storm. But I think it's more important to give the players the sense that implanting these teeth is a dangerous, semi permanent bond with an artifact with power beyond mortal control.

      I don't believe so. The only reason we know of certain things causing portals to be opened/the items to be destroyed is because those types of items specifically say that's what happens.
