  • Join me while I go Fossil Hunting at Sandsend Beach, near Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast. Sandsend Fossil Hunting is best done afew hours before lowtide to leave you plenty of time to get back before the tide comes in. I tried to film as much of the Fossil Hunting as I could while down on the beach at Sandsend. Sandsend has stunning scenery like most of the other beaches around Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast.

    Very nice video. I am a rockhound and a fossil hunter. Can't help but, wince when you dropped the coral.
    Didn't realize this was an older video till you mentioned something about 400 subscribers 😳...😹😹 I am still enjoying your videos even if they are old. Beautiful scenery and watching the sunrise amazing.
    I know what you mean about the seaweed. In Galveston Texas every year this seaweed from Saragosa travels around 2,000 miles and piles up on the beach. The thing you're smelling is the tiny sea critters in the weed. Tiny shrimps and crabs that live in the seaweed make a horrid smell when they die. Every year the city has to get machines down there to clean it up before the tourists season.
    🙃☕❤❤❤

    With the brownish grey modules they seem like they have more brittle fossils so I reccomend maybe using a Dremel for those.

    Hi, when you were atop the cliff saying about the deer, there were some rocks in a hollow on the landward side. Wouldnt these be the same rocks that are falling out of the cliffs onto the beach? Would it be worth investigating those?
    At a really low tide can you walk along the beach to Whitby?
    I really enjoy your vids and you seem to have great knowledge of the various types of ammonites.
    We are looking forward to visiting Staithes and Whitby for a few days later in the year.

      I usually dont go out looking for Jet, because i like my marine reptile bone but if i see some jet i'll take it for sure. Got a bagful which i've picked up over the last year or so on my hunts. Only afew really nice bits though. I'd like to find a good bit with an ammonite impression on the surface one day.

    Great video again! Love the setting, and it's always interesting to see how others fare on their hunts :D
    I'm just a bit confused still. @22:49 you mention that you can tell by the cross-section that the piece of bone is fish bone. To me it looked rather like may be a piece of ichthyosaur jaw, just by the shape. What specifically from the cross-section makes you think it's fish bone? Just the overall shape/outline of it, is it the degree of vascularization, or would you expect the vascular channels to be more aligned in reptile bone? I don't get out to go on hunts myself too much, so am just trying to learn as much as I can before going on my next one ;)

    At your left elbow, at 9:02, there appears to be a large oval stone with a horizontal seam running around the edge. Did you notice this and do you think it’s worth a try at splitting it?
    A foam sponge over your microphone will help kill the wind noise.
    If I came to hunt fossils on that beach, would I be allowed to take them back to the USA?

    • @ForgottenFossils
      @ForgottenFossils  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so, you’re allowed to collect them here as long as you’re not hammering the beds or in the cliff. Basically any loose rock is fine.

      Yes all the time. Probably about 8 out of 10 get broken. That's why I only hammer the more common finds.

    There is always a risk of falling debris from the cliff. I've collected many times from these localities. I see some people usually Geologists wearing plastic industrial hard hats not a bad idea, as a small pebble from 50 or 60ft could cause brain damage. What I've got is a bump cap it looks a bit like a baseball cap, has a cloth covering, a thin plastic shield provides some protection but light and comfortable. I'd recommend one of those very light very comfortable.

    • @ForgottenFossils
      @ForgottenFossils  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a nodule comes down a hard hat wont do anything. False sense of security in my opinion. I just try not to go under the cliffs.

    • @alansdorsetfossils4028
      @alansdorsetfossils4028 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ForgottenFossils I agree but I am sure there are times when you spot something on a screen slope make an assessment dive for it and get clear of the cliff again quick. For me personally having the bump Cap will save me from a small pebble and they come down often enough so its personal choice I still say it's better than no hat at all.
