Jeff I gotta tell you, I have seen a few TH-cam vids on Hawaii, but for me yours' was a standout. Not a bunch of jumping around on a beach, splashing around in the water, but a nice comfy stroll in Kona. For those of us yearning to get over there you truly helped us to take it all in as if we were actually there walking with you. Fine job, and thanks for all the information about the Islands. Mrs and me are in plans to visit Maui and Kuaui very soon.
Keith Bell eh I beg To differ I rather see more of the island and hiking trails the actual island rather than boardwalks,8 can go anywhere for that. I want nature at its finest why I'm going there, off roading wildlife, I mean he still did an excellent job
marie kr - no problem Marie. Perhaps while over there you could capture much of the scenic beauty of the trails and the back woods areas as you describe. I guess where I was "coming from" is that there are so many youtube vids that focus on loud music and splashing around on the beach while you see how the commentator enjoys it, and in itself thats ok. But Jeff ttakes you on a nice relaxing stroll and you hear the actually sounds of the traffic, the ocean, the people, the birds- a virtual live scene of what YOU wil experince once you take that same stroll. Jamaican, rock or even the guitar music has its place- but this was such a refreshing alternative to all that. Everything was so real, live and natural.
Brilliant we stayed on Big Island in August last month.... amazing place, sensational scenery, Mauna Kea for Stars amazing... Volcano, Hilo, North island.. Sensational... Thanks for bringing it back to life :-)
I grew up in Hawaii and it’s amazing to see the places I knew so well as a kid but have become fuzzy with age. Our class took a field trip where we rode the submarine and then took a long stroll along Ali’i Drive, even stopping at the ABC Store. Our families’ doctor had an office in that market you passed and there was a store that exclusively sold beanie babies. That was over 20 years ago. Thanks so much for the video and burst of nostalgia.
We were there in March and you took me back to amazing memories, we fell in love with Kona my fiance's brother and family live there and it truly is Paradise. 💜
My wife and I visited Kailua Kona, May 2017 and we had a great time. We spent a lot of time in the area of Ali"i Drive and we got to see some incredible sunsets too.
Thanks Jeff, brings back lots of memories of the 10 yrs we lived on the Big Island, 7 of them in Kailua-Kona. Recognize most of the landmarks you showed and looks like not much changes on this sleepy island resort town. We lived about 2 mi down Ali'i Dr in the Ali'i Lani condos. Got in when they were new in 1999.
I spent a few weeks in Kailua-Kona during the summer of 2020 when the majority of businesses were closed. It's great to see what it was like before the pandemic.
Wow. It's way more developed and commercial than when I was there in the early 80s. There wasn't much there back then, but still looks like they re keeping the small town resort feel.👍
Thank you so much for this video, me and my wife appreciate the information you provide in your videos. We are trying to make the transition to kona later this year from main land. Keep up the good work.
Mick Scholes I can imagine. I lived there for 8 years, right on Ali'i Drive, and elsewhere in Kona. Best times of my life. I'm going back in December for a visit and I couldn't be more thrilled. Hawaii is home. 😊
I grew up in Kona I’ve seen what happened to a beautiful small town in Hawaii It’s ruined When I grew up there the next signal was in Hilo There were no 4 lane streets There were no subdivisions Kona Inn was still a hotel Kona Hilton was the only big hotel There were only 70 people in my class at Konawaena High School Nobody surf at Banyans without our permission Bali Kai took over what should have been a park We left our surfboards in the bushes and never had to worry about them It was awesome Oh well Nothing lasts forever unfortunately
Excellent video mate. My wife and I have stayed at the Royal Kona a couple of times now, and will be going back for our 25th wedding anniversary for a couple of weeks next year (before visiting Molokai and Lanai for a few days). We've been visiting Hawaii for 25 years (it's a long way from England, so we don't get there as often as we'd like), and have stayed on Kauai for 2 or 3 weeks before visiting other islands, but The Big Island has become our favourite. Your video makes me wish I was there now. Mahalo Nui Loa.
Thanks for the video!! I am thinking about moving there or to honolulu after college to fullfil a dream i had in highschool. After watching this video i am definitely leaning towards kailua kona. :D
Nice video! I lived in Kailua-Kona back when I was age 5 to 7 in 1960s. Our haole family moved there from California where my father was a plant foreman for Mattel Inc. toy company. Moved us out to try to open up a small 35 room motel...all hawaiian-local employed and traditional decor....but he didn't want to have to pay the tribute (demanded bribes) for permits so we moved back to California. We were heavily involved with the Methodist Church there (father helped build, sister played the church organ/hand organ during services & events). I learned fluent hawaiian from the church ladies...it was "forbidden to teach" native hawaiian back then but the church ladies did anyway. Went to school in tshirt, shorts, sandals....had hot chocolate or oatmeal at school for breakfast, typical lunches. We lived in a concrete house right across from the waves/beach 1/2 mile SW of the town. Then moved to a newly built housing area...and they had a huge fire one year there that almost burned down our house (it destroyed 70% of our neighborhood). The "famous banyan tree" is where Tamaguchi's Market used to be located. Tamaguchi had an old cola vending machine (small and medium glass bottles) that would cost 25 cents but would give back 15 cents in change...it was his "joke" on his customers! Us kids used to climb all over the tree while our parents went shopping. We had great memories, made great friends (all are gone), and we never made it back to visit. Once you live in unspoiled paradise, it is hard to return to how the modern world destroyed the beauty. TQQdles™
Dolnor yes I live Hawaii my whole I miss the old life style I’m a 80’s baby not to from you I moved back and forth from waimanalo Oahu to Waimea big island we used to come Kona every weekend I remember when I first moved here fights everyday only cause I was from outer island so I was an outsider but I been living in Kona since 2010 it was rough cause Kona hates waimanalo and I had to earn there respect I have a beautiful wife from Kona born and raised life is good but we talking on moving to Vegas when I finish probation which should be soon
Thank you so much for sharing this journey with us. I really enjoyed it. I reached out to the skincare company and hope they follow up. I am looking for a good line for myself to sell in my boutique. Keep up the good work and keep us informed and educated. Love your videos. Aloha!
Jeff, this was like being back again. Your comments about lack of upgrades highlight the appeal of this beautiful little town, no glitzy touristy atmosphere. I envy you living in the place I would happily give up all my worldly possessions to live and die in.
I was there after Xmas 2003. Takes me right back. Stayed in the Royal Kona. Judging by where the sun is setting, this must have been near the summer solstice. All the buildings were blocking it. Rats.
I see this old video but how is now during this pandemic. Kmarts closed now you have a Walmart there? I see if you go to Hawaii you in quarantine 2 weeks.
I have been debating Kauai or Kona. Better value in Kona but I watched a video from Kona and he was saying how bad the vog is there. Is that true? I am very interested for health reasons.
Joshua Burhenn yes. A tangible way of understanding vog.... if your apartment, condo or house has carpet, and you have air flow through your home windows, in time you may notice your feet are always dirty!! The ever-so-light vog in the air can settle on your carpet and if you leave slippahs at the door, and walk barefoot in your home, your feet will get really dirty
K C Yes! “Quinn’s Almost by the Sea” just half a block up the road from the Kona Pier and the King Kameahmeah Hotel! It’s like a Fisherman’s Dive Bar kinda atmosphere but nothing whatsoever dive-y about it! Open for lunch or dinner, closed 2:30-4:30 in the afternoon. Yes, good fish tacos, or fish & chips, or grill or cold sandwiches - The Reuben is excellent
Yeah for sure, if you check out Big Island Flow on Facebook, there is a lot more island footage on there... But yeah i will look to do more exploring for TH-cam
Another nice video Jeff - thanks! I think don't worry about people giving critical comments. Probably a lot of locals who wonder why a white guy is doing the videos instead of a local... but then they aren't making the videos themselves, are they? Keep it up, you're doing a service for everyone in the islands.
Beach at 4:54 is where all the drug dealers hang out after dark. More than a few prostitutes as well. Kona Canoe Club serves fake seafood aka seafood salad fish/scallops/lobster. Kona Inn and Huggo's are places where I've eaten dozens of fabulous meals at reasonable prices. Do not walk around after dark alone anywhere in this town.
It’s a monosyllabic language. So pronounce the vowels all the same. AH EE OO EH OH (A E I O U ) if you always read the vowels the same with different consonants then you’re pronouncing it right. The ` means a pause and to pronounce both vowels twice separately. Forget what it’s called. But it’s really easy to pronounce Hawaiian. That’s why those guys told you to just read it ... Hawaiians had no written language so when you’re reading it it’s actually white mans interpretation of the sounds. So you can’t mess it up. It’s written for you. 🤙🏼 aloha. Hope this helps.

Great video! I was in Kona 2 months ago.....absolutely loved it! Your video brings back fun memories. I will be returning!
Wow. It's way more developed and commercial than when I was there in the early 80s. There wasn't much there back then, but still looks like they re keeping the small town resort feel.👍

Great job! Brings back memories. Used to live there in the late 80's. Looks totally different.
Great videos. I have been tearing through them. Moving to Kona in 5 weeks.
Mick Scholes How do you like it so far!?
Maleea Schrank I love it. Managing a winery/pub. Beach cruising in my jeep... yeah. Hard not to love it.
Mick Scholes I can imagine. I lived there for 8 years, right on Ali'i Drive, and elsewhere in Kona. Best times of my life. I'm going back in December for a visit and I couldn't be more thrilled. Hawaii is home. 😊
Maleea Schrank nice. Stop in at the Port of Call at Privateers Cove restaurant and say hi. Kona old industrial next to the market.
thank you, for lovely walking tour.
Beautiful, just beautiful.
Excellent tour...more tours please!!
That’s a beautiful island, we visited all 4 islands in Feb and we loved Kona, that exact motel and area ❤️🌈

God this looks nice. Hopefully one day!
The ceiling fans at Kona inn are beautiful
That was great, thank you for sharing!
Excellent! Just as if we were with you! We (my wife & I) plan on visiting around Oct.....I'd like to hang out with you.
I never knew the name of that beach and I lived in Kailua since 1968 on Hamburger Hill
Jeff, this was like being back again. Your comments about lack of upgrades highlight the appeal of this beautiful little town, no glitzy touristy atmosphere. I envy you living in the place I would happily give up all my worldly possessions to live and die in.
You are inspiring me to move. Holy moley!
Thanks for these videos. Just like you, I'm living in San Diego and debating on moving to Kona.
I can relate to your debate! LOL. San Diego is beautiful but beaches in Kona are too amazing.
The Trolly Car? Does it keep going back and forth all day long?
Hey Jeff your doing a very

I see this old video but how is now during this pandemic. Kmarts closed now you have a Walmart there? I see if you go to Hawaii you in quarantine 2 weeks.
I was there a few months ago; did that same walk. I guess everyone there does. Do you prefer Kona or Hilo or somewhere else?
Both Hilo & Kona are amazing in their own ways.
I can’t decide
Just curious why practically every video akips past Quinn's. ..IMO the best food in kona ...its just across from King Kam!!!
The ONLY place to find potato skins haha Quinn’s is my favorite!
Fish tacos at Quinns

I never seen the sun so big damm
I loooooove that your camera is stabilized
Is there a resource you have accessed to learn more about proper enunciation when over there?
you should have went to magic sands but yea good video
Do you have any recommendations for some good fish tacos in Kona?

What camera do you use?
iPhone 7
Can I ask what camera you use ? I'm coming to Hawaii on vacation and thinking about buying a video camera.
He used iPhone 7
Seems like maybe it was an IPhone but on a gimble or something

I was lead to believe that the beachs in Hawaii was not private.

what are the new snorkel regulations on the big island
All of hawaii basically caters to tourism. There is nothing real about the islands that interests me. Over crowded and too expensive.
Sorry but Kai = ocean , lua = 2
The early hawaiians thought 2 oceans met along the islands
Loved the video but your commentary was not impressive. You really need to learn the proper pronunciation of the Hawaii names.
Take a hike dude. You NEED TO CHILL.
