    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m working on a companions video that totally revamps this for next weekend. But the way I approached it is using the location sensor input of yourself and the npc and subtract them. You can then use a less than or less than equal to comparisons and a 1 constant. So you can check if the X and Z distance is LESS THAN 1 then don’t make the follow continue. Or only activate the follow when the Z or X distance is Greater than 1(or however many units the npc needs to stop from the player)

    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      (I apologize in advance for the length) I’ve been thinking about this as well. I’m working on a few different possible solutions. They fall into two major camps. Make the Person more intelligent or make the level more intelligent.
      On the Person side we can use a touch sensor to check the floor ahead for example and determine whether to jump a gap, or check if the player is above our Y location to jump, or combine the y location with if we are facing a wall(touch sensor detecting/etc). And see if they could tackle the game level you have set up.
      In the make the world more intelligent camp, maybe having touch’s sensors throughout the gaps and ledges and just cause them to jump when or slightly after they enter that trigger area.
      And finally, wildcard hack solutions like. If you can make the followers speed perfectly match up to the player - Just use a timer as a sort of input delay so they do exactly what you did but however many seconds after you do it.

    • @DaveNodon

      Make sure to switch the “movement reference mode” in that person’s settings to *World* and not *Camera*. That way all the math is calculated based on the world positions and not relative to the camera!

    thank you!!

  • @DrizzyB
    @DrizzyB ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why subtract tho? Im just trying to understand _why_ you use subtraction to make the ai follow the player.
    Edit: nvm, after some thought I realize that the location sensors give location coordinates and if u subtract them then the output would be however many steps closer/further the character put in as input 1 is. Then by connecting said output to the enemy character it will move said distance to make the location of the player.

    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s also why when the two people are far away the output is way higher and the character zooms to you 😆
      I have a more updated version of this called companions btw with some more features . Mostly the same.

  • @RednaxG
    @RednaxG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    if you want to do this in a 2d game where the player and enemies float (UFO) you can use Y instead of Z

    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! What’s nice about this simple solution is it actually just gives you the difference between two points. You can use it in a lot of ways. Even just to check the distance between two points!

  • @valu_s_prm
    @valu_s_prm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    so the subtraction method works because the goal of the person nodon is to reach "0" as a value?

    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the math helps it work out that way.
      If player is at X value 5, and the enemy is at X value 3. 5-3=2. So we give the person nodon an x value of 2 to go in that direction. As he approaches, the value gets lower and lower until its 0 ( at the player).
      Basically - While the positions are not the same, get the difference and move to reduce it.

    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, I think the easiest way is to have them do the follow but with an input speed as low as you can get it so they effectively just face the right direction. I think I did that once I don’t remember if they even perform the walk animation if you can get the input low enough. Otherwise yeah a hinge but if the person isn’t solidly planted in the ground they’ll usually have that “falling” animation pose

Use a ‘greater than’ comparison nodon, if the player Y value is greater than the enemy/follow then he is higher, so drag that to the jump input. How can you make it slower if it isn't a person? I don't think you can change the movement speed of a free hinge or moving object...
    I'll fiddle around a bit and reply to this comment if I figure something out.

    • @DaveNodon

      Hi there!
      To deal with this I would put a map nodon in between the calculator and the X/Y inputs of the object in question. You can play around with those settings. For me, I went back into the level, replaced it with a moving sphere size 2x2x2. For the the map nodon I used input range 0-5 and output range 0-2. It just slows it down a bit.
      Also try switching the moving object settings for “mode” from acceleration to speed. That way the speed doesn’t go zooming up.

    Can you do how to make another person run away

  • @jesusisking09

    I tried doing it with a UFO, it just runs to the edge of the screen. Help?

    • @DaveNodon
      @DaveNodon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      UFO, Person, and the Car all have very different control schemes, that’s why it’s all weird. I have a video on a Car controller follow mechanism but it’s muuuch more complicated because of the way cars and UFO handle directions.
      I try to avoid using them whenever possible maybe by attaching a follow object to the follow person and making the person invisible etc. but then it’s tricky to go up and down through space like a UFO!

    Suggestion: how do you make a shooting game enemy with multiple hits?

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make it non-destructible, but make it destructive towards your bullet/projectile. Then put a Destroying sensor on it, which will trigger whenever it destroys a bullet. Run that into the Count Down port of a counter that starts at 3 (or whatever max HP you want the enemy to have). Take the output of the counter through a NOT gate (remember: 0=false, anything else=true) leading into a Destroy Object nodon parented to the enemy. And you're done :)
      Every time a bullet hits the enemy, the bullet is destroyed and the Destroying sensor fires. That ticks the HP counter down 1, and when it hits 0, the NOT inverts that into a 1, enabling the Destroy nodon to kill the enemy.

      Your comment got me thinking. If you had this set up but instead have the person follow an object that stays with your character but that you can disengage and send somewhere else then they’d follow it and then if there’s an enemy in their area they could attack. 👀
      Or even simpler than that, if an enemy enters your vicinity maybe send their coordinates instead. It would take some planning but possible!
