  • Today I am going to show you how to build a Lionel, or Railking Track Cleaning Car. You must keep your track clean. ▶︎ This video is for ages 14 & up
    This is a 4 shelf layout, with four main lines and two of the main lines are elevated. I run Lionel, Atlas Trains, K-Line and Mikes's Rail King. I use K-line Shadow Rail track. This is a tubular track with ties on a cord board painted gray. Thanks for Watching - trainroomgary

    Interesting idea. They now make Mr. Clean thin pads. You'd need something to mount them to the cleaning car, perhaps a small sponge.

    Hi this saved me a lot of money. I have 0-27 and S gauges all on one large layout. I was going to buy good track cleaning cars for each gauge until I saw your video. I have lots of track I can't get too. This worked perfectly. I had all the materials around the house and my trains run better then ever. Thank you so much!

    Thanks, Gary! What an easy and cost effective solution. My vintage Lionel PW 3927 is fun, but it only does a so-so job on my large layout. I saw a great homemade track cleaning car at the awesome San Diego 3-Railer Club layout in the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, but yours is tops for simplicity and cost. Thanks!!

      Hi Caleb's Trains: Just remember to make sure the track is try from the cleaning solvent, or it will damage traction tires. Do not use Goo Gone only use 91% Isopropyl alcohol found at any drug store. Take care & thanks for watching. Gary 🚂

    This is totally awesome and cost effective. I use this on a "O" gauge train modules, my train set and at the Wheels Museum train set in Albuquerque, NM. This can also be used on any gauge train set using the same process. The only change I made was I used rubber bands to attach the white pad and a 5 lb. weight when I run the clean. Thanks!

    This is a very awesome way to clean tracks. Used this on our very large train set (45feet by 30feet) at the Wheels Museum in Albuquerque, NM and on a TTOSNMD module train set. Used the alcohol, cut the clean pad in half, used zip ties or double face tape to attach the pad, a strong engine, 3lb. weight, made about 6 passes and removed grease, dust, sand from gargraves track or tubular track. The improved performance was like day and night. Very cost effective $300 VS $5.00.

    Gary I started using that Magic type foam pad for a unique part of my job that needs the pad to be thinner. I used one of those utility knives that you can break off part of the blade to get a new sharp edge. That blade you can extend the whole way if you like and have a pretty straight and flat cut, but you have to use it only for this or that blade will not be sharp enough after using it to cut other things.

    Good idea Gary , Hornby did a simular type of cleaner years ago but of course just in 00 , it amazes me the amount of dirt that collect to the track and wheels , I use that goo Gone , but it is very strong , so also use the old lighter fuel . and of course the rubber takes some beating

    Great Video, Just a thought, if You put the Track Cleaning Car attached to the FRONT of a Alco Diesel with a Front Coupler and set the speed steady, it be interesting to see if the train's performance increases as the track is cleaned in Front of the Train, like a Plow .

    • @trainroomgary
      @trainroomgary  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mr. Danoconnor: Thanks for the tip but there is one issue. The track cleaning car is laying down a cleaning chemical that may end up in the locomotive. Thanks for watching. Gary 🚂

    how is the cost comparison between buying a track cleaning car and building one and how is the performance of both railroad cars different?

  • @bradstrains
    @bradstrains 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    My mistake, my mind was thinking K-Line but I wrote Atlas... I guess it's because there sounds are similar because they both have RS4 sound system. It is nice. Can you make my video request, of a "Head to Head" comparison in the sounds of your Atlas GP-35 and MTH F-3 A-B-A? Thank you.

    • @trainroomgary
      @trainroomgary  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim Aspin: When the pad is dirty and done being used no need to keep it around. Put it in the trash and put on a new one to fit. One spot of hot glue will hold it in place. Thanks for watching and commenting. Train Room Gary 🚂

      A couple of bolts with large washers at the pad and wing nuts at the top. The washers will sink in and not interfere with the track. Clean the pads with dish soap and re-use.

    • @trainroomgary
      @trainroomgary  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael Lindsay: No soap required on this brand of pad, it there is soap, cut the pad to size and wash out the pad and let dry. Only use 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. Also do not allow the locomotive to come in contact with any cleaning solvent. The solvent can danage the traction tires on the drive wheels. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. Train Room Gary 🚂

  • @michaellindsay6735

    • @trainroomgary
      @trainroomgary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael Lindsay: Paper towel and rubbing alcohol will work. A rag may be better because sometimes paper towel will fall apart. Hope this helps but do not run the locomotive until the track is dry. Thanks for watching. Train Room Gary 🚂
