    One thing you've missed was an interview with James Hetfield in Metal Hammer magazine back in 1998. They asked him 'Have you ever punched Lars out?' James replied 'Yes, I have. It was back in the early days where we got our first encore. The whole band agreed to play this cover, but when they get back on, Lars goes into a different song, and the band struggled with it. After the encore was finished, I went straight up to Lars and punched him right in the gut and I said 'Don't ever do that again'. There's been other times he's rubbed me the wrong way but I just use my size against him'

    Jason Newstead was the greatest member of Metallica because he had the hardest shoes to fill in Cliff Burton, he had to somehow make it work knowing the other 3 members were not only grieving the loss of Cliff but, also now comparing Jason to Cliff and all of the while, Jason just did his thing. Meanwhile during Jason's tenure with the band, he was treated like an outsider. He was never really respected by the band and the fans know it. During the bands' Hall Of Fame induction, it was Jason who got the loudest crowd reaction. These guys did the same damn thing to Dave Mustaine. Screw Metallica, with their release of an album it seems like every damn decade.

      And yet, they treated Newsted exceptionally fine financially-wise. In the beginning he was on a 6 month probation period where he was just an employee, but after that he got full member status getting exactly the same share as the rest of the band. If I get this right then this isn't exactly typical for the business, not even at the time.

    • @ArizonaGunsDave
      @ArizonaGunsDave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Breeg2011 Sure he was paid, that's not what I am talking about. If he was an equal, the fans at their R&R HOF ceremony wouldn't have erupted so loudly. That day said a lot about James, Lars and that old lady Kirk and their character but also said a lot about Jason and his perception as an equal in that band. They hired a mediocre outcast bassist from Suicidal Tendencies and their music has gotten worse. I don't even know if they are a band anymore, they come out with a new release every decade it seems. Good riddance anyway. Slayer, Exodus and Megadeth were all better bands! To me btw, Exodus should replace Antrax as the so called big 4 and Testament should replace the pop band Metallica!

He may well have been surpassed these days by the likes of Corey McCormick, but to call Trujillo mediocre is asinine. And is "from Suicidal Tendencies" supposed to also invoke inferiority? Because it actually implies the opposite.
      Regardless, Newsted is a prince and only deserved the best on all levels. And yeah, paying the man properly barely signifies the respect he's always deserved. IMO, he deserves our highest levels of respect for walking away from that very un-rock & roll situation. 🤘

I don’t know if it was the right way to dismiss him the way it went down but it sounds like it needed to happen one way of the other. and frankly it’s worked out for all parties involved. there is no way Metallica would’ve stayed together with those 3 in the band; too many egos, too many cooks in the kitchen
      Dave has dismissed many people in his own band too so it’s a little hypocritical to hold a grudge for 4 decades when they were all teenagers when it went down. So I disagree, I don’t think they are on the “wrong” side of the beef. There shouldn’t even be a beef at this point

His arrangements and putting this part between those parts and so on is what makes Metallica the best songwriters of the genre. The fact that he's not a guitarist might even help him not have any bias.
    PS As muchg as we fans may not like it, they were also right about Napster and Grohl is a pandering ass in this video. Grohl also made his millions by then so easy for him to say the music should be free. The musician that he describes who can't put food on his table has no money to pursue a lawsuit. Met them in Denver (Master of Puppets) tour night before the show. Heard what hotel they were at and me and a buddy went to look for them. Lars was on a phone in the lobby, with a bouncer ("Tiny." a big guy) We kind of stood there tripping out. He saw us, (in our Metallica patched jean jackets) came right up to us.... we talked a bit. He said he just called a cab to go to a bar where the rest of the band were are at. Invited us to go along. We did, but were too young to enter the bar. He tried to get us in saying we were with the band etc. Bouncer said no. We ended up just hanging outside waiting. Soon James, Cliff, and Kirk came out, and Lars introduced us all to them. Making dumb jokes, like "these guys like our horrible music apparently"...etc. Rode back to hotel in the cab with Lars and "Tiny" and hung out with them all on their tour bus for a couple hours. They were all super cool to us.

      I don't think they would do much differently. They grew up together. Part of the way James plays is because of Lars and after so many years, that's the player he is. Kirk too. You think in terms of who your band mates are and even with a more capable drummer, it would take a while for James to think outside of the Lars box. So, all his riffs would probably be within the Lars framework. James hasn't written anything complex since AJFA. I think even a different drummer would be affected by the Metallica framework and always play in the style of Metallica. But, who knows. It would be interesting.

      I would also love to see them record an album with someone else. I think Joey Jordison (RIP) was a solid example of what could be done. His fill in spot was impeccable live. Lars can get lost in songs he has played for decades when live and there are no retakes or studio engineers to fix things. Joey played true to the song, but also added things that just showed he was a head above Lars behind the kit. I bet the entire band , Trujillo in particilar would benefit.

I remember he had his roadie carrying a large bottle of cranberry juice, as he was drinking cran and vodka, which wasn’t common at the time. So he would order vodka on the rocks and add his own mix. Anyway, he got hammered…like I mean fall down drunk, and puked in the bathroom. He picked up the waitress ( a friend of mine) and used the worst pick-up line ever (which worked!) ‘I might need a place to crash tonight’ 🙄Meanwhile, he had a suite at the Four Seasons😂. I talked to him between sets and he was cool to me-but I saw him be rude to fans, if I’m honest. At one point, he burst out loud “I’m just here for a few drinks, leave me alone!’ to people. Which is fucked-if you’re a rock star you don’t go to the busiest rock bar in a huge city and not expect to have fans approach you-go drink at the Four Seasons, where no one gives a shit who you are, ya know?
      Anyway, the next night we were playing and I looked over at the bar…at saw Sebastian Bach standing there. He’s really tall and hard not to notice. Now the Gasworks was one of his old gigs, being a Toronto boy, so I decided to ask him to jam. We were playing the song LOVE SONG by Tesla, which has a long intro with no drums, so I ran over to talk to him while the band started the song. Much to my surprise, all of the members of Metallica were sitting around him. The bar was itself was on an upper level, and due to them being seated I didn’t see them from the stage. I was startled, to say the least. But I regained my composure and said “Hey, man…you guys want to get up and jam?’ That was when Kirk said ‘C’mon guys, let’s switch instruments, it’ll be fun’. I could see them entertaining the idea, and they almost did it, but then Hetfield said ‘Naah, man…we just came from rehearsal and we’ve been drinking all day’. Sebastian then said “You guys sound great, keep rocking!’ I ran back to the stage and finished the set. Afterwards I was talking to them a little and they were pretty cool. I used to play drums standing up, at least a little bit. James asked me ‘Hey man, do you ever sit down?” To which I replied ‘No, man…I’ve got bad haemorrhoids’. To which I got a laugh and a Hetfield ‘Right on”.
      All in all in was a cool experience. Even though they didn’t jam, which the audience wanted-our singer asked them to get onstage over the mic and the crowd went insane. But alas, it wasnt to be. They were on the Monsters Of Rock tour 1988 and used their days off for some rehearsal. And partying.
