2022 Honda HR-V Review - Turbo or not turbo? That is the PHP 348k question

  • All-new for 2022, the Honda HR-V is now available with a 1.5L VTEC Turbo engine for the top-spec V trim, while the standard S gets the 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated i-VTEC. It also gets Honda Sensing across all variants for improved safety. And just like its predecessor, the ULT seats have been carried over. Vince tries out both the 1.5 S non-turbo and 1.5 V Turbo to see if the PHP 348,000 price difference is worth it.
    00:00 Intro + Design Overview
    02:46 Rear + Cargo Flexibility
    04:33 VTEC vs VTEC Turbo
    07:36 Driving Impressions
    10:26 Fuel Economy
    12:19 Honda Super Safety Sensing
    13:38 Does the 1.5 S feel bare?

vince is one of the objectively best reviewers, hands down. highlights key features but also calls out flaws and gimmicks. his technical breakdowns are also simple enough for anyone to pick up but detailed to give viewers insights not found on other reviews. basically, his reviews don't feel like he's just reading a brochure or a spec sheet and will speak his mind on things that are problematic.

Been driving the HRV 1.5L version here in Australia for 8 months now and also owned a 1.5L Honda City, the same engine with Jazz/Fit. There’s a significant decrease in acceleration & increase engine noise. The Jazz & City drives breezy but the HRV screams ‘vrooooom am a tiny engine fitted in a bigger body!’😂 You expect this generation will have an improved cabin noise? Nope, still with poor sound insulation & even the speakers lack sound quality. The steering wheel is hideous, non-leather, polyurethane material that feels cheap to touch. I say this because it’s always hands on the wheel when you drive.
Here, the base model includes the safety feature driver assist technology but excluded the blind spot monitoring system & fog lights that should come standard these days. Also the rear AC vents is absent here. It‘s essential for backseat passengers during frequent heatwaves & cold snaps! There’s also no spare tyre so good luck calling a rescue vehicle away from the city!
Buyer’s remorse? As I owned a Honda City for a decade without major issues, the HRV is a reliable daily driver. But owning it long-term & loving it? No. The overall cabin comfort & driving experience is uninspiring. Speaker is inferior for a good music or podcast during traffic jams & long drive. You want to drive relaxed, swift & smooth but the engine is noisy & sluggish. I bought this model because I was desperate to get a car post-pandemic & it’s readily available compared to other vehicles with a wait time of more than a year. Second hand cars got expensive due to supply & demand.
Verdict: avoid this base model if you want a fun to drive car. If the budget permits, get the hybrid or turbo variant. Just my opinion and personal experience. Those who own this model or planning to get one, please don’t be offended. You’re entitled to your own preference.🙂

Sir Vince, isn't the road noise coming from the lack of fenderliners?

  • @edwin_ac

I said it before, and I'll say it again, Honda Philippines just blew it. They should have brought the hybrid HRV to the country. Toyota and Nissan are now a step ahead in putting electric vehicles available to the public. Not to mention, other Chinese brands are doing the same.

    Good review as always.
Can we also have a metric conversion of the measurements, Vince? Even on screen would be appreciated. Takes a while for me to shift from Imperial to Metric without pausing.
    Ground clearance in centimeter, though.

Sad that Honda did not retain the 1.8 engine of the prev model. Would have been more sufficient as a NA engine.
Yes, production economics, fuel efficiency, etc., but still...
