Another fantastic song by Burt Baccarat and Hal David. Check out there catalogue. This song was a hit for several artists. Cilla is amazing though. Also Alfie by Baccarat and David.
A Scouse Tory very unusual wouldn't endear her to the people of her home town of Liverpool ,there were much better British singers around at that time, she was too nasal , Dusty Springfield ,Lulu Elkie Brooks etc are much better.
Cilla Black as previously stated worked in the Cavern Club. After Cilla supported The Beatles , John Lennon suggested to their manager Brian Epstein that he sign her up. All though the formal audition was a disaster due to her nerves, Epstein later spotted her giving a much more confident live performance, and her debut single was released three weeks later. Cilla had her own show simply titled Cilla. It aired from January 1968 to April 1976. She worked as a presenter on TV too. Her real name was Priscilla Maria Veronica White. She was appointed OBE for services to entertainment (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). In 2014, she was the recipient of the British Academy Television Awards' Special Award and the first Royal Television Society Legends Award in honour of her 50 years in entertainment. There is a Statue of our Cilla in Liverpool along with statues of the Beatles and Billy Fury. Cilla's funeral took place in her home City of Liverpool. People lined the streets to pay their respects. She was laid to rest, at a private ceremony, in Allerton Cemetery alongside her parents.
Didn't she die after a fall an hit her head on the stone floor. I think she was there some time before someone found her. Maybe wrong there. I'm not sure.
Cilla started her career working as a cloakroom attendant in the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool She was soon talent spotted and performed alongside the Beatles and many other famous bands. Her career spanned many decades.R.I.P. Cilla
Our Cilla, singing live, notice how, unlike most modern singers, she doesn't have the mike so close to her mouth it looks like she is eating it! Pure class.
People sometimes forget (or increasingly nowadays, never even knew) that Cilla Black was a phenomenal singer back in the day. Most people nowadays remember her as a TV game show hostess, and with her fun personality she was very good at it, but they should look further back at what lifted her to stardom. She was a huge star in the U.K. and had her own weekly TV show where she would sing and have guest performers on as well.
This song was a big hit for Dionne Warwick in the US. Cilla Black's big hit in the US was "Your My World". Another female British singer who doesn't get enough attention by reactors is Petula Clark, who had a string of hits in the 60's; among them were "Don't Sleep in the Subway", "Kiss Me Goodbye", "Downtown".
Cilla, real name Priscilla White, was showbiz royalty in the UK. A working class girl from Liverpool, she got herself a job as a cloakroom attendant at the Cavern Club where the up and coming Beatles played. She became part of the British invasion of the US in the mid sixties on the fab four's coat tails. To be honest though she had a successful career in the UK her US record was modest, so you probably haven't heard her much if at all. She was very young, only 20 or 21 in this clip, and her career petered out after the early seventies but she relaunched herself as a TV host, most famously with the game show Blind Date. Sadly no longer with us.
Cilla started in the Caven club Liverpool at the same time as the Beatles started by the same manager. Cilla's haircut was a fantastic style at that time, which set a trend .
In 1963-66, I was an American teenager living in the UK. I loved Cilla Black. She wasn’t very big, but she could belt it out! Her hair cut was very hip at the time, so many teen girls were getting this style…including me! Her rendition of Alphie, from the film of the same name, starring a young Michael Caine, is so good. I loved all the popular Brit bands of the time: Dave Clark Five, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, Cliff Richards; talent everywhere! What a great place and time to be a teen!
Great reaction. She was the perfect singer for this beautiful Burt Bacharach composition. A really good live performance. As you say “old school”, not only the song’s sentiments but also her delivery even down to the stillness of her poise. She let her voice and the song do the heavy lifting and made it look so damned easy! This was the first record I bought as a six year old in 1964. P.S. the hairdo was very British “swinging 60s” style 😂
I was going to say the same thing. That pixie cut was a 60s vibe. Very chic. And her voice is massive and gorgeous! The curtsy to the Orchestra is perfect.
Cilla Black, Lulu, Sandy Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro, Shirley Bassey. We weren't starved of amazing female singers when I was very young. I'm sure that others could add to the list.
Cilla Black.....next song of hers to listen to is, "You Are My World" Her blunt cut hairstyle was a popular 60's hair style. Take a look at The Beatles (from the UK) when they first became popular in the U.S. (on The Ed Sullivan Show); or the British singer.Lulu who sang the title song."To Sir With Love" from the movie of the same name starring Sidney Poitier.
Cilla Black was a huge UK star and she was born in Liverpool and her actual name is Priscilla Maria Victoria White. how she became black as her last name was because there was a confusion over her contract when she first started out as I could not remember whether her name was white or black as the last name and they went with black which was incorrect, but they like The name Cilla Black and her to convince her parents and also Cilla about keeping it as black her last name and that’s how it stuck. she married someone who worked at a bakery and his last name was Willis so her married name was obviously Mrs Priscilla Willis. She had three children called Ben ,Jack and Robert. She also had a daughter who only lived for a couple of hours and her name was Eil. At this stage you probably will have worked out that I am a massive fan of her and I was so sad to see her go so young as I think she was in her 70s when she died.. absolutely amazing woman. P.s they played this song at her funeral which was filmed so that the public could see you know which is really nice of the family to do that. don’t know if you’re aware but she also did TV programmes like Blind Date and surprise surprise just to name a few.
Cilla was massive in the 1960s, when she’s singing Anyone Who had a Heart she’s looking and smiling at her manager Bobby Willis who was to become her husband of 30 years. Her following hit is Your My World, She also sang the theme tune to the film Alfie starring Michael Cane, Cilla and Bobby had 3 sons together, she was hilarious in interviews. Cilla started the shoes in England called Blind Date and Surprise Surprise. Kindest Regards Pauline My head is full of useless information lol x
Late comment, but that haircut was called the Pixie cut. It was inspired by Twiggy a 60s skinny model who shocked people with her short hairstyle. Cilla black sang the theme tune to "Alfie", the 60s Michael Caine film.
I was 12 years old when this came out, she was a real hero to us little girls growing up. She was Cavern based, as were The Beatles. I grew up with some amazing music, which had me hungry for so many more genres in a matter of a couple of years,I was into blues, jazz and real R&B. Great times! Thank you for this, thank you for the memories! ☘️💚☘️
Cilla was a British institution. She graduated from pop star to TV personality. She had her own show . She was a friend of the Beatles before any of them were famous back in Liverpool. She went on to host several shows for years . She sadly passed away after a fall at her holiday home.
she really was a grade a star, a wonderful woman. had some brill songs to. with no auto tune stars only had their voices to sing with, it sorted the corn from the chaff for sure. just luvin the reactions keep them up.
She also was friends with Paul O'Grady former acid tongued comic drag star Lily Savage who then became a TV star in his own right and animal lover nice bloke and campaigner against cruelty now both passed away sadly, cilla did lots of TV work over the years ..
Cilla was a national treasure in the UK. She was a contemporary of the Beatles from Liverpool. If you think her vocal is good you need to check out Dusty Springfield (another UK legend who had her own show). Start with Son of a Preacher Man, you'll love it.
Cilla was a hat-check girl in the Cavern when The Beatles were playing there and Paul wrote the theme song for her BBC TV variety show which was the biggest thing on television throughout my childhood There`s a version of that song, Step Inside Love somewhere on TH-cam with The Beatles singing it with her. Her version of the classic song Alfie with Burt Bacharach is also worth a watch, it was recorded during the studio sessions and she said she was terrified by Burt.
I'm 68 now, and this is still one of favourite all time songs. I saw Cilla singing on show in Blackpool as a child in the 60s while on holiday. Also lulu, Tom Jones and Ken Dodd. Great times !
My nan used to babysit Cilla when she was 2...😳 my mum was a teenager then, her real name was Priscilla White and her mum and my grandmother lived in what was the slum area of Liverpool UK ..👍❤️
Cilla was brilliant, as others have said huge personality in the U.K. - try You’re my world, Alfie, Something tells me … there are lots to choose from! Great reaction xx
Cilla Black was born Priscilla White from Liverpool. The Beatles were in the audience during this performance. She spoke about rehearsals with Burt Bacharach making her sing the high notes for this song over & over until he was satisfied. He was a task master.
The simplicity and power of a solo artist doesn't need all the distractions of stage hype, with flashing light shows, backing dancers etc. Sincere talent speaks for itself. The late Cilla Black, R.I.P. was so down-to-earth and funny. A much loved national treasure.
7:04 "Something about the hair is throwing me off'. This was 64 and her hair was very IN (Mary Quant). Cilla was from Liverpool an lived with her parents above a shop. Her whole outfit could be called a 6o's classic. The musical director on here is George Martin (Sir) who was the Beatles Music producer. They performed together. I wish you would look at the Liverpool sound from that time. Brilliant, natural artist. I see you are covering the Animals. Your in for a treat. .
Nice to see you go back yrs ...theres excellant music from that era to pick from . You should react to LULU ,singing TO SIR WITH LOVE, from the movie of the same title with main character played by the imcomperable Sidney Poitier ( spelling?) One of my favorite songs and a freakin great movie!! Please try to put on a show of yours !
"Anyone Who Had a Heart" is a song written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) for Dionne Warwick in 1963. In January 1964, Warwick's original recording hit the Top Ten in the United States, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, South Africa, Belgium and Australia. In the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and New Zealand, Warwick's recording lost out to a version by Cilla Black. Black's single was a UK number-one hit for three weeks in February/March 1964 and was also the fourth best-selling single of 1964 in the UK,[3] with sales of around 950,000 copies.
So glad you liked this. Your comment on marriage - she was married to Bobby, teenage love and together until he died in the 90's and never married again. She was entertainment royalty in the UK. All good wishes from the UK and keep on with the great work.
Fun fact, the man directing the orchestra is George Martin, known as "the 5th Beatle"..legend in music, got the Beatles their first contract. Love the end of this video where he bows to her. The man himself was great and knew greatness. Cilla!!
The "Twiggie" haircut was all the rage at that time (Twiggie being a popular modal) My mother cut my hair like that one time, and I never cut it like that again, I turned into a hippie in the 60's and 70's. I am old.
I remember hearing her when I was a small child. I just got all warm and fuzzy inside. I was exposed to a lot of music when I was young. Thanks to my parents and other relatives ❤❤
Britain in the sixties was alive with fashion and music and all kinds of creative arts. Cilla was a true star, they don’t make them like Cilla anymore.
Hair style... Twiggy influence, a model in the 60s and 70s. Cilla sang to me in my childhood. Supberb singer. I remember my aunt emulating her. They both had red hair, sang like an angel with gusto.
I like listening to this type of music because every song is telling a story. The words in the song are telling a beautiful story. And the instrumentals are incredible. R.I.P. Cilla Black
Cilla passed in 2015, makes sense this was put up, she did some shows like Blind date and Surprise Surprise back in the day, you would probably enjoy watching with the missus chilling on an evening Also can't tell you how much I appreciate you finding her, brought a tear to my eye Cilla is a national treasure
I am so glad I got to grow up to Cilla’s music as a tween to a teen. She was British but Australia loved her too as did the Beatles. I had that Pixie cut hairstyle a couple of years later. Listen to her sing Alfie.
Cilla was wearing THE hair style of the day - a 'mod ' hairstyle. Many girls wore a similar style based on Mary Quant, a fashion icon of the day, and may have been originated or cut by Vidal Sassoon, the top hairdresser in England. I wore my hair like this then. Recently I had my hair cut in the same way and got many compliments from young women who had not seen it before. Cilla was a fabulous and famous singer with a number of hits . You saw Dusty Springfield on the array of photos. She was famous in the same time with a wonderful voice. If you haven't checked her out, please do so. Regarding the word, "love'. It took women a long while to realise that the word was often actually a substitute for the words and intentions of 'lust and sex' by men ! The saying was - "A man gives love to get sex. A woman gives sex to get love" ! ! !
For women from the UK with similarly strong vocals try some Shirley Bassey [sang 3 bond songs] and Lulu for a beautiful powerful pure voice - all from the same era.
National treasure! From Liverpool and knocked around with the Beatles and many others in what was an very exciting time for British musical innovation. 50 years in showbiz after her singing career.
It is one of the darkest ever songs as well to me - inbetween all lines, pitch black, ultra-melancholy. 'Without you i'd die, dear'. I agree with all you say as well.
The Beatles gave her help to sing when she worked at The Cavern, a club. She also had another song I loved, You're my World, which she wrote for her husband Bobby
The real deal. No lip sync, no digital enhancement. Just sheer class.
and 21 yrs old
Cilla Black was a huge star in the UK and had a lifetime career in TV, she was also a first class human being!
She was a vile tory hag.
FUQ You are sooo rude . Prefer it if her hair is long? Nice ,long hair and sings shit?
Another fantastic song by Burt Baccarat and Hal David. Check out there catalogue. This song was a hit for several artists. Cilla is amazing though. Also Alfie by Baccarat and David.
A Scouse Tory very unusual wouldn't endear her to the people of her home town of Liverpool ,there were much better British singers around at that time, she was too nasal , Dusty Springfield ,Lulu Elkie Brooks etc are much better.
Classy song, classy lady.

She was a national treasure. Sadly missed, especially here in Liverpool. She never lost her Scouse accent. RIP Dear Cilla

And she’s not in what looks like a bedazzled bathing suit for her performance…
Cilla Black was a sensational singer. Thank you for reacting to her.

Yep Our Cilla was pure British Royalty, friend of the Beatles and a massive TV star back in the day, sadly we won’t see her like again
Cila black was a great singer and hosted a TV show called blind date for many years all through my childhood her song Alfie is my favourite of hers
Alfie..
Love that song! Great voice!

I lived in the England in the 70’s and Cilla was very popular. Do a reaction to “You’re my World” her vocals are amazing!!!
I think that was her best song ever..
Definitely the best.
Cilla was at her peak in the 60s, not 70s. I was born and bred here, 50s and 60s were my eras.
'Alfie' is her best song.

Every time I listen to You’re My World it gives me goosebumps, I think that was her best song, worth a listen too.
A guy could very easily fall in love with this woman just by hearing her sing this song.
She and Dusty Springfield were great in that era. Dionne Warwick was as well.
Goodness me. Dusty was in a class of her own. Way, way ahead of Cilla. It hurts to see them in the same sentence! Sorry, just my opinion!
My heart is full, watching an American rapper enjoying our cilla. Thank you man.

Written by Burt Bacharach - he wrote huge number of songs sung but amazing famous singer in the 60s. Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick etc.
i know this song from Dionne Warwick who also recorded it in 1963. Also don't forget Bacharach's writing partner, Hal David.
Yes some people forget Hal David. They worked together a long time. They also wrote Close to you for the Carpenters.
Also Dusty Springfield. Amazing!
And Petula Clark
No autotune - beautiful voice - we used to watch her show every Saturday night in the late 1960's.
Didn't think I'd see Cilla on here, this is awesome Black P! :D

Cilla is the 1st female singer to hit #1 consecutively in the UK with Anyone Who Had a Heart and You're My World.
while Connie Francis did it in the US in 1960

No electronics or computers, just her singing… she was brilliant.

Her backup singers were the Breakaways, they backed many british artists back then.
Fun fact, the man directing the orchestra is George Martin, known as "the 5th Beatle"..legend in music, got the Beatles their first contract. Love the end of this video where he bows to her. The man himself was great and knew greatness. Cilla!!
Cilla Black was a huge star all over the world in the 1960’s & early 1970’s. No comparison.
The "Twiggie" haircut was all the rage at that time (Twiggie being a popular modal) My mother cut my hair like that one time, and I never cut it like that again, I turned into a hippie in the 60's and 70's. I am old.
Uk here, Cilla is amazing, had a brilliant voice her links with Burt Bacharach wre amazing...Alfie, classic
A fantastic singer and we never missed her TV show she had a wicked sense of humor .
I remember hearing her when I was a small child. I just got all warm and fuzzy inside. I was exposed to a lot of music when I was young. Thanks to my parents and other relatives ❤❤
Cilla Black's real name was actually Pricilla White.
Britain in the sixties was alive with fashion and music and all kinds of creative arts. Cilla was a true star, they don’t make them like Cilla anymore.
Cilla brilliant singer from Liverpool from a Liverpool fan 🇬🇧❤️
Cilla Black was the best friend to the Beatles
Hair style... Twiggy influence, a model in the 60s and 70s. Cilla sang to me in my childhood. Supberb singer. I remember my aunt emulating her. They both had red hair, sang like an angel with gusto.
Still feeling this song all these years later. Ty
Started in same club at the same time with the Beetles the Cavern Club Liverpool
This was live, no sync, no enhancement, no backing tape, It is called TALENT.
LOVE YOUR COMMENTS we were not perfect back then... but love your channel. I am a women of this era - it was a simpler time
I like listening to this type of music because every song is telling a story. The words in the song are telling a beautiful story. And the instrumentals are incredible. R.I.P. Cilla Black
LUV this song
Cilla passed in 2015, makes sense this was put up, she did some shows like Blind date and Surprise Surprise back in the day, you would probably enjoy watching with the missus chilling on an evening
Also can't tell you how much I appreciate you finding her, brought a tear to my eye
Cilla is a national treasure
she just a class love cilla rip xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Oh boy. I was 16 when this song came out. Great hair styles back then.
listen to Alfie by this treasure of a woman, it's lovely.
Cilla had a love story like no other Bobby her husband she sang for him
👏👏👏👏 So glad you enjoyed it, one of our hidden diamonds of the 60,s
It is one of the darkest ever songs as well to me - inbetween all lines, pitch black, ultra-melancholy. 'Without you i'd die, dear'. I agree with all you say as well.
I am glad you like this. From the same era, Sandie Shaw singing "Always Something There To Remind Me" is well worth a reaction.
Yessss I haven't heard this in forever☺
Talented and a great song.
Have respect for her. That's all I ask. It's Cilla. You guys didn't have her, know that.
And thankfully we did 😊
The Beatles gave her help to sing when she worked at The Cavern, a club. She also had another song I loved, You're my World, which she wrote for her husband Bobby
