  • Building our tiny house on wheels together with the team from Tiny House Chattanooga in Tennessee was an amazing experience. To find out more information, including the cost and details on the products we used visit our website: www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/...
    We were rushing to get the home complete so we could be on the road for some tiny house festivals around America and so the entire build was done from start to finish in only 21 days!

    Tiny House Chattanooga (www.tinyhousechattanooga.com) were amazing. Not only did the team pull together to get the home finished to an amazingly high standard, they also allowed me to get stuck into the build with them and I was able to learn an incredible amount about tiny house building in the process.
    The home was constructed on a trailer from Tiny House Foundations (www.tinyhousefoundations.com). We follow the whole build process of this tiny house, from preparing the tiny house trailer and erecting the Volstrukt steel frame (www.volstrukt.com/) right the way through the completed home.

      Hmmm. IMO, I took away that, with this remark, that the builder(Mike) was disrespectful of the client (Bryce). I'm pretty sure one of the worst things a man can call another man is a "prima donna"... Said with a straight face...Mike did try to recover face a bit, but sorry, pretty nasty to my ear.
      Bryce is an actor - not a construction person.
      I admire the fact that a person of little to no experience (he admitted) showed up, was teachable, and worked this hard. I would not give any business to a person who spoke like this about a client, on camera, for eternity.
      The person cutting the check (unless Bryce got this house for a huge discount, for promoting these mens' businesses) gets a better attitude, no matter what. At any time during the association. Just my opinion, as someone who has worked with the public for 30+ years. If it was not made clear to Bryce the amount of time needed for the job, whose responsibility was that? Pretty sure the person who owns the business/has experience should've made it clear how much time was required. Left a bad taste in my mouth, obviously.

    • @TheMbeau92
      @TheMbeau92 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@ellenmcintyre1247 I disagree. They have a great relationship, and Mike was being facetious. Especially at the end, you can see they appreciated working together. But you're entitled to your opinion.

      @JJoy-bk8yr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ellenmcintyre1247 Bryce is an actor with TV show experience, and he is the director, producer and editor. He obviously was not offended or he would not have included that clip in the video he edited himself. It is more than likely Bryce himself came up with the "diva" line and directed the builder to say it. He may have deliberately amplified the drama to spice up a possibly dry technical subject. That's not to say it was false; but maybe not the word the builder would use on his own. The builder did express a lot of appreciation for and camaraderie with Bryce. I'm sure they are on good terms with each other and imho we should be happy with both of them - each man knows his own field of expertise.

    You should check out the "showerloop" an open source system to recycle your shower water by putting it through a filter. So it saves energy AND water. This MIGHT make off grid tiny house showers using only solar power possible (I haven't done the math).
    The guy who done this also done the calculations to see the water is actually cleaned and sterilized thoroughly enough.
    This idea should really get some more exposure.

To be able to be part in building it, makes you come to know it, take it as your home. I always worked in my rented homes all over the last years - flooring, painting, designing things for them and of course changing my mobile home - built a seprate toilett, covered with a big cushion top, so nobody can see, it's the toilett 😉 put another floor in, changed the cupboards....It make me feel satisfied and homy. Have fun with your wonderful tiny home!!!

      Your acting talents are well suited to your show. Imo each episode is a mini documentary film. I've learned lots watching & I have a suggestion. Since your only storage is in cabinets & under bed, it might be practical to use your shower as a part time closet. With limited water supply your showering will be brief. You could add a removable or collapsible double hung bar. Place a removable tray on floor for boots & shoes. When you need the shower, momentarily move clothes to top of bed. Thanks for all you do. Wishing you abundant Blessings!

    en thumbs up for this house. Both your home and the documentation are amazing. I never thought I'd see a tiny home this small that I could see living in myself, but yours is perfect, both functional and pleasing to the eye. I loved that you decided to go with both conventional electricity and a solar panel option. That kind of practicality appeals to me. You have a beautiful home. May it serve you well for many years to come.

    Fantastic and a wonderful use of space. Love the bathroom and loo as one enters the tiny...and then through to the kitchen area. The ONLY thing I would change for personal reasons is that I'd ask for the bed area to be able to be a couch/table area which would change into a bed so that I could have both options available. People want to pop in then we can chill in that area and not just have to sit on the bed...but as mentioned, that is just a personal preference. Awesome tiny indeed. Beautifully built with professional people who know what constitutes a good tiny.

    Why a completely flat roof? Traveling around North America you will encounter a lot of rain and snow. I can see it creating less drag on the road, but wouldn't a slight pitch of just a couple inches help with roof drainage?

    It's a great build and lots of thought went into it. The Zip System is great. The Rockwool insulation is great. The extensively air sealing is also great. Sadly, the steel wall studs are not so great. By choosing such a highly conductive material, you've basically reduced the R-value of your walls by 2/3. That's not a typo. Despite all your effort, that thing is going to be cooooold. You'd have done better with an outer layer of foam insulation, but steel studs are still not a good building material. They aren't even approved for load-bearing walls around here. Hope your results are better than the science would suggest.

    • @sietuuba
      @sietuuba 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, all that insulation work is for naught except maybe for altering the surface temperature of the wall at each "insulated" spot -- but that is no comfort and would only be evident in a thermal camera photograph. This wall assembly cannot perform in any demanding climate zone. ALL control layers need to be continuous - the roof for water, the air barrier, the insulation, and the weather resist barrier under the ventilated facade if the wall has one. That floor has the same problem, there's no point in jamming in insulation between the floor joists if all that continuous steel of the trailer remains in contact with both the great outdoors and the inside, just under the floor sheathing of the heated volume. You have to build up from a continuous layer of insulation, not one broken up by cold bridges that will be just under your toes. :(
      It saddens me to see these things happen - there's information out there but as luck would have it, some of the crucially important bits for energy efficiency are still not common knowledge even among the professionals.

      @livingbig  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You absolutely could do a green roof on a tiny house, but they are very heavy and not really practical for a home which is designed to be traveling all the time. If you weren't moving often, then a green roof would be really cool in a design like this one.

    The website says that the average price is about $50,000. New trailer, metal frame... and oriented strand board (OSB). Many builders wouldn't use it for their own homes, but they will use it in yours. Some OSB does come with a water resistant covering painted on. Any place you break the surface seal (cutting or drilling) creates a new edge that welcomes moisture; and it swells when it gets wet, but that swollen edge doesn't shrink when it finally dries (and it takes a lot longer to dry than plywood). Also, it's heavier than plywood. Personally, I'll pass on OSB.

      @livingbig  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      My concern (from what I've heard via those in the know like Matt Rissinger and Joseph Lstiburek (buildingscience.com/documents/digests/bsd-106-understanding-vapor-barriers)) is that trapping moisture in particle board is a big issue :( You have included an HRV which will help. I am intending to build (not tiny on a trailer but small on piles in the northeast US) with SIPS and still chasing info re moisture thru walls and roofs. Looks like plain old tar paper is the way to go. Tx for your candid video and reply. Life would be boring if we knew everything ahead of time, right :) Appreciate your videos and Kirsten Dirksen's the most re the tiny house game. Best regards, Rich

    • @chezmoi42
      @chezmoi42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bryce, I was concerned with the possibility of toxic fumes from the particle board as well as the PIR insulation material. PIR is rated high toxicity in fire tests, though it appears it is more stable in other circumstances. I could find no information about the wood agglomerate used on the panels; is the glue as toxic as standard panels? This is one of the big problems with RVs etc., all the toxic materials in their makeup, and many TH fans are looking for the healthiest solutions to replace them.
      A friend of mine here in France recently patented a non-toxic particle board made from oyster mushroom mycelium and straw, after observing the behavior of various substrates left to weather outside her mushroom-producing caves. There are products being made in the US (and perhaps in other countries) from other formulas that could be very interesting to TH builders. greenbuildingelements.com/2015/04/15/mushroom-based-building-materials-are-here/
      I think mushrooms could also be a useful solution for off-grid homes looking for water/soil purification techniques. Check out Paul Stamets here: www.ultrakulture.com/2016/01/04/the-soil-magicians-6-ways-mushrooms-can-save-the-world/
