I will keep watching and promoting you to my friends on You Tube, etc. I am glad you review basics in boxing.....very important to the foundation. I will keep in touch. And thanks for keeping body punches alive....seemed like they were a dying art for a while with all these headhunters. Best, Rey

One trick used to learn muscle memory for quick drawing a pistol from it's holster, is to practice in slow motion and very very gradually increase the speed of the draw. I think this trick would also work for learning to keep your hands up during combos. Rather than jumping in feet first and full speed, take some time and hit the bag in slow motion. Slowly go through the movement of throwing a jab and be very conscious of every inch of your body and the proper movement each part of your body should be making and finish the movement with feeling your bag touching your chin like Jason taught us....repeat. Run through the slow motion movements many times and gradually increase the speed until you're at full speed.

Good video. I've done about 4-5 years MMA with boxing involved. After viewing the vid, I throw the same hooks as you, yet some guy came up to me while I was hitting the heavy bag at Retro Fitness telling me I was telegraphing them trying to show me how to do it his way. He seemed to be more concerned with trying to impress females, while he is punching the heavy bag with no gloves or anything on his hands, not so smart.
I met an amateur boxer there & him and I will be working together as he's going to help me improve my boxing as it's the weaker point in my arsenal. I love taking advice and tips from people, and watching videos like JT's, but I have a problem with people coming up to you with an attitude like you're some 10 year old kid.
I do the same thing working from the outside as if the bag is an opponent, practicing a lot of my jabs. JT is right at the end with keeping your other hand up that isn't throwing. I remember when doing focus pads or the heavy bag while training, if we didn't have our hands up, our trainer would come around and smack the hell out of the open area with his glove. This serves a purpose so you don't drop your hands in the ring, or even in a fight out on the street so you don't get ko'd. All it takes is one well placed punch to the face and lights out.

I have a question, hopefully you can help me out! I enjoy working out on the heavy bag and when I'm working on hooks I don't go too deep into the bag and try to hit towards the front of the bag like I'm taking a chip out of it but although I wrap my hands, I still get scraping cuts on my fingers (not my upper knuckles but the knuckles close to the finger nails, mainly on my pinky finger) Am I sliding too much after I throw my hooks and how can I prevent this? Thanks.

    • @PrecisionBoxing
      @PrecisionBoxing  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

This is quite common, especially if you have been hitting the bag less than a year. A lot of guys will put small sponges or foam padding on their wraps or tape parts of their knuckles. It could also mean your gloves are too lose or not broken in enough to shape around your hand. This happens to me when i get new gloves

Treat the bag like its your opponent. Contact is danger. If you are too close you are not safe. If the bag is swinging towards you register that as your opponent moving towards you and practice leaning back, leaning to the side, leaning forward ducking and then doing a guarded pivot.
Obviously if you are close to the bag you chin should be down and your hands up at all times.

Never finding an answer can be frustrating too, it's not an answer but like I said.. There is a lot of info there. Thanks, and stay healthy 😉

Some guys use gloves that are pillows and should use 8 oz gloves for more power and speed with 16 or 14 oz gloves UR basically just hitting the bag and thinking UR making an impact but UR not !!

Phon Xieng you cannot on a heavy bag, you will break you're wrist and look like a fucking idiot in the process.

really? then explain why the burmanese and thai punches banana tree and bamboo tree wrap together with barenuckles. and some even nail pad on the wall and punch it bare hand to harden their fist. dont forget 1920 thailand brought glove in for muay thai because the british and european were to pussy to fight barenuckles with them. since then muay thai wore gloves.

if you even make it to 80 i heard people in western world eat junk food to much. and i never heard any muay thai let wei fighter having arthritis in their hand leg feet joints. brain damage maybe they think slower from all the damage they got from being hit in the head

Phon Xieng First of all, you have the whole idea of bareknuckle fighting all wrong. Bareknuckle fighting almost entirely excludes fist punches to the head (hence the bareknuckle, low fisted stance), basic anatomy tells us even with a ton of knuckle conditioning, your knuckles will never be as thick and hardy as the skull, and so you risk breaking your knuckles with too hard a punch.
That said, knuckles have nothing to do with hurting yourself on the heavy bag. The thing is fucking foam, obviously you're knuckles will be fine. Your wrist, however, meets very different resistance with a heavy bag than a person or wood, as it the bag compresses, then once its max compression is reached it massively accelerates the rate of deceleration, in physics this is called jerk. It will break your wrist, guaranteed, and you'll look the fool.

+Phon Xieng (MrMuaythai84) Banana trees and bamboo are much easier on the hands. And those who punch walls to strengthen their knuckles (e.g. Shaolin martial arts practitioners) aren't punching with power, because if they did their knuckles would without a doubt break. Also, bareknuckle boxing is safer than gloved boxing. Gloves minimize superficial injuries such as cuts and scrapes, but they also allow punches to cause more damage to the brain and increase the likelihood of knockouts.
      Edit: Sentence fluency

Awesome video my favorite explinations were the "taking chunks out of the bag with the hooks" and "contact one hand on the bag the other on the face" you are a great teacher thanks. From New Zealand👍🏾👍🏾

My nephew has been victim of bullying at school the last year he is six. I have been trying to introduce him to MMA but his mom and grandparents always say he will become violent. As bullying worsened and he started coming back home with bruises they saw the need of teaching him self defense. I practice MTB, and Jiu Jitsu and use speed bag and heavy bag at home. He saw your video and got somehow inspired to workout. I started teaching him and he seems more self confident now. Thanks for your videos JT! (BTW he did NOT became violent)

drtrance thats great news! I know parents often dont get it and they hurt their children by overprotecting them. Its great that you were there to help. I think BJJ is a great way to go about it, and boxing as a backup in case he has to punch.

Thanks for the compliment, sounds like you have some real depth and passion for martial arts. When the bag moves a lot I try to time it coming back towards me either by hitting it to stop it, or by stepping off to avoid the bag and setting up another attack. You can't always prevent the bag from moving so I try my best to use that to increase my work rate, for the most part when it swings back into me I'm forced to punch again.

Hey JT! I didn't want to be that jackass that watched your video and split. I loved it! I've been working the heavy bag periodically for about a year with zero training so obviously I have all the mistakes that beginners pick up. The only fight training I ever got was in the Army in 1988. Doesn't translate well to boxing! But I wanna thank you for this vid! It's only 6:47 but it covered all my mistakes and now I can concentrate on that and get a better workout. Thanks!

Hi I added a video response. I actually went to do an interview and hadn't been near a punch bag for over 15 years because I had to give the sport up I love so much through illness. A few months back I entered the gym and couldn't resist having a go. Like I said its been a long time but would like to hear your comments and pointers. You do a great job on your videos. I took particular interest with your left hook demo, never was shown to throw it like that. Excellent.

Great to see somebody emphasising keeping your hands up. I can't believe how many people overlook this on the bags. Glad to have it validated to be honest because at times I've thought I was going mad! I do exactly the same, try to feel my other hand touching my cheek when throwing a shot.

I've gotten so many people at In Shape gyms approaching me about punching or stopping their workouts to watch me hit the bag. I explain that it isn't about hitting the bag incredibly hard, but to hit it properly. You can always tell when someone hooks a bag properly because you get a snap that fills the entire room - rather than a thud like the people at In Shape were/are used to hearing.
