It actually looks like the people of Greenland are trying to position themselves for a buyout from the US. It makes sense they would declare independence from Denmark first, so they and not Denmark, would receive the payment from the US. If they don’t posture this way, the people of Greenland are nothing more than a commodity in a real estate deal. Declaring independence and then doing the sale will make the Island the richest per capita region in the world.
Yeah, a few thousand fisherman want to lay claim to an incredibly vast sparsely-inhabited territory with a staggeringly large potential for mineral development... It's crazy that such a thing would even be possible.

They divide that money between the 56,000 people who live there and then get US protection like Guam. Greenland has no food supply save for a few fishing vessels in summer, and no energy save for what is shipped in. A country that can't feed or power itself can't be "independent".
@leipamies1816absolutely doesn't matter worth a piff, if they can't feed and power themselves. "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today" isn't the position of an independent nation lol
How, exactly, has their population persisted for millenia then ? The natives predated viking exploration so ... what the hell are you talking about? Republican mythology
@squireson are you just not at all considering the vast technology difference and all that implies? Sure, the natives survived. In small huts, with no electricity, and using primitive tools. Expecting the modern residents of Greenland to live like that, I'm fairly sure would violate humans rights laws lol. But more than that, OP is referring to their current infrastructure, or lack thereof. Any settlement/community/society of people needs to have a stable and reliable source of food before they can move on to any sort of progress. This is referred to as "the agrarian stage". If Greenland is reliant on others for food and fuel, they'll be in a massively disadvantagous position if they declared independence. They frankly wouldn't be "independent" in the sense that they can take care of themselves. Now, given a decade or two of development and preparation, they could be. Assuming they can acquire power sources for electricity, and a fuel source for vehicles and ships. And assuming they can develop a more sustainable source of domestic food. All of which they just don't have at this stage. I'm sure a tribe of 50 people could be plopped down anywhere in Greenland and survive. But its current population with their current technology level would just die. Like The Long Dark in real life
... and amplifying something that is not new without pointing out how old-hat it is. Could this be turned into a justification for U.S. aggression in the region, though. Is that why this is getting promoted now ? I think the comments section is saying "yes, that is exactly what is going on here".
But most of it is completely wrong.. There are even straight up lies in this segment. Claiming Greenlandic independence meets opposition from the king for example, that's just lies. And Greenland wanting independence and having the choice of taking it to a vote is nothing new and has nothing to do with the U.S.
Yeah difference between giving out 112 billion in case and that same amount of money in the form of weapons which will expire if not used and old military vehicles 😂
Greenland has had the ability to become fully independent since 2009, all it takes is for the people of Greenland to do a majority vote. So they have plenty of freedom, but remain a self-governing part of Denmark, because advantages are far greater than the disadvantages.

It's just way too big, and Denmark too small. Connected to Denmark, yes, NATO is a backup, but, in particular in terms of navies, Europe in general is VERY badly stretched at this time. On its own, the situation for Greenland is even worse. It would HAVE to apply for membership to NATO, and Trump could play hardball. So far, what we have heard from Greenlanders and the Danes indicates a tremendous amount of "normalcy bias" and inability to think "outside the box". At the same time, Trump's statement about the importance of Greenland to US defense / security gives a not much recognized but VERY crucial insight as to what Trump really thinks of Pooty, not what Trump's political opponents tell you to think about what Trump thinks of Pooty. He's right too... Meanwhile, the same sort of thinking that left Europe unable to deter Pooty (they even laughed at Trump telling them they darn well needed to beef up their defenses) fogs the minds of the gov'ts of Denmark and Greenland, when it comes to Greenland. I mean, look. In a nice world, I'd be all for Greenland being independent, and then I guess it'd be up to them whether they want to be poor or not, although they might want to consider if they have some responsibility to provide needed resources to the rest of humanity. Nobody minds much if Greenland makes some money doing so. 🙂 But... That's not realistic. It is NOT a nice world. Not one damn bit. Among major military powers, the US has been about as benevolent as it gets, the last few generations, and we are the country that nuked Japan and helped firebomb Dresden (at the top of the list of "tough" things the US has done.) But at least we've not murdered millions of our own for political purposes, and we've not done much of the "conquer and brutally rule for generations" bit, for the last several decades. Think clearly and realistically: In a too often nasty world, what is Greenland's least bad choice?
Now that Denmark built us infrastructure, housing and supported our people through generous social welfare for decades, we demand to be freed from the shackles of colonialism! Our land will never be for sale! But with Denmark out of the picture, lucrative mineral and tourism deals can be reached, especially now that those racist colonizers finished building us a real airport. Of course tourists will have to stay in cruise ships off our coast until we have enough cash to buy every one of our people a top of the line snowmobile, big screen TV/gaming station, 10 cases of liquor and then have enough cash left over to pay foreigners to build hotel/casinos themed to honor our spiritual heritage.

Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland! Greenland is currently an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark. We are Danish citizens. Our dream is full independence. We, most emphatically, DO NOT want to become another, abused, neglected overseas territory of the US. The idea that you can just send someone in here with a bunch of money and we’d sell our country, is ludicrous. All we have to do is to see how the US has, and is treating its indigenous populations in Alaska and in the continental US. We have no illusions about being treated any differently under US rule. Greenland has formally been a territory of Denmark since 1721, long before the U.S. was even a sovereign country. In 1979, Greenland got autonomy and a Home Rule government was elected. This was achieved, not through bloodshed and war but through peaceful negotiations. A situation pretty unique in a world where most colonized people have had to pay for any independence with their blood. The authority of the Government of Greenland, and its parliament, was further expanded in 2009. The Greenland government and parliament make unilateral decisions on almost all domestic issues. The members of the parliament are elected every four years through free and fully democratic elections. However, some areas are still determined by Denmark such as defense, foreign policy, citizenship, and the judiciary system. Denmark does not, however, enact or decide any laws in these areas that concern Greenland without consulting first with our own lawgivers. The ties between Greenland and Denmark go way beyond history, politics or money. There are many deep family ties. Many people in Greenland have a Danish ancestor or ancestors or Danish family members. Our society is modeled on the Scandinavian system of tax payed healthcare, education, social services etc. Currently Denmark subsidizes Greenland annually with the equivalent of around 600 million US dollars. To think that the US would ever willingly pay even a fraction of that to Greenland is insanely naive. The US has never paid as much as a penny in rent to Greenland for the land they have annexed/occupied for their military bases. The US already strategically controls Greenland, through their military base in the northern part of Greenland. There is no chance of the Russians or the Chinese coming in here with any military might. No, trump isn’t worried about the Russians or the Chinese coming to Greenland. That is an excuse. No, he wants full control so he can strip mine Greenland with impunity of any and all mineral wealth, raping her blind and leaving nothing but death, destruction and pollution in his wake. This is what his MAGA goons mean when they talk about “development”. We don’t want your system of government, we don’t want your model of society with its crazed gun culture, insane medical bills and costly education only for the rich. You have no freedoms that we don’t already have. Our society is not perfect, but yours is definitely not worthy of emulation. We can’t do much if the orange menace wants to act like Hitler and annex/occupy us. Our population is small and not heavily armed. But such an aggressive act towards a friendly, peaceful neighbor and ally, would certainly not win the US any new friends on the world stage. They would probably lose several of the ones they have now as other countries would justifiable fear a U.S. take over. Trump may think he’s joking or that it’s fun to threaten the sovereignty of other sovereign nations as he has done to Canada, Greenland, Panama and Mexico. But this kind of rhetoric is dangerous in a world as volatile as ours. To dismiss his comments is foolish, as he, like Hitler did, has plenty of followers who are ready and willing to carry out his wishes of a violent take over of territories not belonging to the US. The US under trump would gain far more through peaceful coexistence and trade…and as our leaders in Greenland have stated: We are open for business, but we are definitely not for sale and I`ll fight for my country so bring it on anyhow you like..
If the people of Greenland can get a deal like Alaska and give residents a share of the oil and mineral profits they could be as wealthy as the Kuwaiti citizens. If the central part of Canada and Northwest Territory would join the US, Greenland could be physically connected by a bridge to the rest of North America, the hearty people of Greenland could be free to immigrate and settle and develop the northern tiers of the continent.

@markussmedhus9717 Don't confuse not being able to afford health care with having no health care. This strange idea some Americans have of "universal" health care being the answer or meaning "free" health care is also ridiculous. The US healthcare system is available to anyone and everyone because health care providers aren't legally allowed to deny anyone care. That's literally what "universal" means. It's available to everyone. I'm from Sweden and we have universal health care that we pay an insane amount of taxes to support. But despite this, a heart attack over here costs you an entire average annual salary and cancer treatment will cost you even more. However, we are also not a republic or a union where different states have a lot of autonomy and independence. Over here, our national government runs the country and they hold legislative power. It's completely different in the US. The issue isn't just "simply lower the cost" since it goes a lot deeper than most people think. The main problem being that the entire constitution and the entire legal framework including all laws would have to be completely restructured from scratch, not to mention that the US would have to remove most or all state independence and effectively seize being a union since the federal government currently can't change the system no matter how much [insert president here] promises to. This isn't a change you can make happen over night. In fact, it would probably take so much work that it's pretty much impossible to pull off.
@markussmedhus9717 It's not even number #1 for gun violence in the US, it's like #30 and has less than California and DC which are "supposedly" more firearm restrictive than Alaska.

You don't seem to understand.. It's not that they want to split from Denmark, they want *independence* That's the opposite of joining a nation as a territory or state. You seriously look at a people wanting independence and expecting them to do the opposite? If Greenland *has* to be a part of someone else they'd want to stay a part of Denmark. Over half their population have a parent or grandparent that's Danish, many live, work and study in Denmark. The Danish king is even very popular there. Their bid for independence is not because they don't like Denmark but because they want to be their own nation. Again, the opposite of joining the U.S.
Greenland needs to vote to separate from Denmark and then become the 51st state. This will create unbelievable wealth for both Greenland and the U.S. It will ensure that Greenland survives being taken over by Russia and China. It’s a serious conversation. Its greenlanders that are holding both both their independce back but also investors. They are very protective of their nature and i applaud them for that. Let’s just ignore that fact that Greenland has full control over it’s minerals and other resourches. Denmark has no say, whatsoever. Greenland offers mining deals but the US companies don’t want to go anywhere near it. The greenlandic people are very protective of their land and nature and are selective in what deals are approved. Adding to that it is very costly to not only operate a mine and extracting the minerals but it also takes time (years) and money to find out where the minerals are in sufficient quantities.
Danes can now go and settle in Siberia. Dont act too smart and try to cover up your colonial crimes. We know very well about you guys sleeping with Hitl*r and his German aggressors.
Permitting 56,000 people to keep the entire free world at bay would never work. Especially with a leader talking about "colonialism." The same "colonialism" that lifted Greenland's people out of the Neolithic (no insult intended).
Is it not clear to you from the video? Greenland can either be an independent state or a US territory and either way it will make money from the US. With Trump it would be more about the free market than government bureaucracy.

You are such an uneducated clown, colonial possesion???? That's what Greenland would turn into if US annexed it, the Danish Vikings were imhabiting the southern parts of Greenland 300 years before the Inuits came, the Danish government is the one keeping Greenland away from colonialism and keep the population alive with all the benefits they get. You know nothing...
Something you don't seem to udnerstand; Greenland is free to become independent any time they want and has been for many years. Also: "I do not see why in 21 century any European country should have colonial possessions" but the U.S. should have by annexing them? You don't see how stupid that is? How about you leave Greenland and Denmark alone and let Greenland choose their independence when they feel like it? Greenlanders wants independence, not because they hate Denmark, but because they want to be their own nation. Becoming a part of the U.S. is the opposite of that and what they want.
Honestly, Greenland’s push for independence seems like a mix of genuine pride and strategic timing. They probably know full independence isn’t realistic right now, especially with how much they rely on Denmark’s subsidies, but the timing here feels too perfect to ignore. With all the global attention on the Arctic and their resources, they’re likely trying to leverage this moment to negotiate better terms or even attract investment from the U.S. It’s almost like they’re swapping Denmark for the U.S. to get a better deal and more autonomy. It’s smart-using their position to set themselves up for the future while showing they’re serious about breaking free. Makes you wonder exactly what they have planned behind the scenes.
@@Vlad-sj5yw Did you read the title? Yes, they have sought independence for some time, but it hasn't been a viable option until now. Honestly, Greenland's push for independence seems like a mix of genuine pride and strategic timing. They likely know full independence isn't immediately realistic, especially given their reliance on Denmark's subsidies. However, it would be ignorant to say this has nothing to do with the U.S. With global attention on the Arctic and its resources, Greenland is likely leveraging this moment to negotiate better terms or even attract investment from the U.S. It’s almost like they’re swapping Denmark for the U.S. to get a better deal and more autonomy. And there’s nothing wrong with that-they’re setting themselves up for a better future while showing they’re serious about breaking free. The U.S. could offer them a deal similar to what we have with other territories-allowing them to operate independently while maintaining special access. Essentially, they’re negotiating for better benefits than the subsidies they currently receive from Denmark, which is a smart move for their long-term independence.
There is nothing strategic about it. They want out, it's that simple. They have pushed for *independence* for hundreds of years, they dont want a new owner.
Greenland currently CAN amd wants to leave Denmark, but they can't because they depend on government subsidies from the Danes. If they switched to the US, they'd be able to make up the subsidies.
Amazing you think this has anything to do with Trump. I get you didn't get any information about what's going on in Greenland before Trump talked about it but this is nothing new and has nothing to do with the U.S.
Q: 'Seward's Folly' was a land purchase that was widely ridiculed at the time. Today we have a different name for it. Anyone know what that is? A: Alaska. The biggest state in the union. They also made fun of Jefferson when he wanted to purchase a little land called 'Louisiana' from Napoleon, who was trying to raise cash for his war of domination over Europe. Turns out land purchases are a great idea. If Greenland declares independence from Denmark, Popeye in an inflatable rowboat will be enough to take it over. The US can offer 'protection' for certain mineral right considerations. They would be a territory that identifies as a country so it's hate speech if you disagree.
"take it over" We're not China or Russia. We're a country built on freedoms. There is a minority of Americans who don't believe in freedom. You appear to be one of them. One condition of statehood in the US is the people choosing to join the US. The people of Greenland won't choose to join the US. Neither will Canadians. They look at Trump and laugh.
Russia sold the land , Denmark isn't in the market so what relevance does this have. All I see here is a lot of hot air to justify the forceful takeover of territory. An ally's territory. historical trivia doesn't change the immorality of even considering this.
It's bizarre how many people don't get this. Legally, only one entity has the authority to grant Greeland independence: the Danish government. Greenland cannot unilaterally declare independence on its own. If US troops invade, that is an act of war against Denmark. That might sound comical, but Denmark would not be alone.
Of course the King does not want to sell Greenland because after that he wont be the king. Now he has 45000 people to rule. It's understandable but immaterial. Sooner or later all the kings and queens in Europe will fight for their existence. They will either join China or USA. It's stupid to think that small fish can live in the pond when bigger fishes are lurking near by. Another thing is besides Kings and Queens, general public would like to be part of USA. Because that gives a citizen freedom to live in 50 states, less taxes, access to more money and businesses without visa and red tape. Why would the general public want to have a king or queen ?
So here’s how this is going to go. Greenland is going to vote for independence in their next election and they’ll win it, otherwise Denmark looks like the villain. After they separate, they’ll need to align themselves with a super power, which will be the United States. They’ll apply for American protectorate status and just like that, they’ll be a self governing country like Puerto Rico but part of the US. Won’t cost the US a dime.
@@goodshipkaraboudjan > Greenland is part of Denmark which is an EU member. Nope, although Greenland is a Danish overseas territory, it's not part of the EU structures, they left in 1985 over fishing rights. This is actually pretty common, e.g. basically all British overseas territories were not part of the EU when it was a member (e.g. Bermuda), neither are the Dutch ones (e.g. Aruba).. France is a bit of an exception here, with some of their territories being fully part of the EU, like Reunion. But curiously Greenlanders have EU citizenship nevertheless, e.g. they can move to/work in any EU member state. I suspect nobody cared because there are so few of them. It's complicated.
I don’t think they know the difference between kingdom and well being once own state. Canada still has the English monarchy, doesn’t mean that they belong to England. The people of Greenland can do with that whatever they want, but ultimately Denmark will probably be there if Greenland needs help in their path to independence. It’s highly likely that Denmark “ letting go” won’t be as traumatic as went Brexit happened and Greenland may see a boost on thier end because of them being good and playing the game of diplomacy.
it's not like Canada and the UK. Greenland is apart of the Kingdom of Denmark and Denmark have a lot of say like security, foreign policy, defence etc. They are not going to be apart of the US though. Also in the case of them being independent, negotiations about resources are going to happen
There hasn't been an English monarchy since Elizabeth I died. The Stuarts were the Scottish monarchy. The Hanoverians came to the throne because of their descent from the House of Stuart. In any case, Victoria's mother was from German, as was her grandmother and her husband. Her son, Edward VII, married a Dane. George V married Mary of Teck, whose father was German and whose mother was Hungarian. George VI married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon whose father was a member of the Scottish aristocracy. Elizabeth II married Philip, Prince of Greece and Denmark. Nor has England even been a sovereign state since 1707. Your arguments are as bad as your English.

*Denmark is stepping up the defense end a bit, but, really, Greenland is quite vulnerable without the US to defend it.
But...

Also wrong about the King being opposed to Greenlandic independence or claiming any connection between the coat of arms and what's happening. The coat of arms change is normal for a new monarch and has been underway for a long time. Also the king is very popular among Greenlandic people.

Trump is planning a trade war with China, Canada, Mexico, EU and probably any other country with meaningful trade with the US and is one step way from killing NATO. The EU will collapse in less than a decade and much of Europe is in decline. Greenland's only chance for long-term survival is with the United States.
Greenland was an empty frozen wasteland until the Danes settled there. It's not colonialism to find new land.
